To watch antenna broadcasts through HDMI, connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to a compatible digital TV tuner or receiver, then run an HDMI cable from that device to the television. If your TV has a compatible built-in tuner, connect the antenna to the TV’s antenna input instead—no HDMI conversion is needed.
What you need to convert an antenna signal to HDMI
An antenna carries broadcast signals over coaxial cable. A tuner selects channels and, on an external receiver, sends the picture and sound to the TV over HDMI. Look for a digital TV tuner box with both an antenna or RF input and an HDMI output. An HDMI cable by itself cannot tune antenna channels. ADTH’s setup guide describes connecting the antenna to its box by coax, then connecting the box to the television by HDMI.

Choose a receiver that supports the broadcast standard used in your region and the output your TV accepts. Standards and compatibility vary by market and model, so check the receiver’s official specifications and manuals for both devices. The right model cannot be determined without your location and equipment details.

Check whether your TV already has a tuner
If the television has an antenna input and a compatible digital tuner, connect the antenna directly to that input and run the TV’s channel scan. The tuner is already inside the TV, so there is no need to route the antenna signal through HDMI. LG’s antenna setup instructions explain this direct connection and channel scan.

If you specifically need the signal to enter the TV over HDMI, or the TV lacks a compatible tuner, use an external receiver instead.
Connect the antenna through an external receiver
- Check the receiver. Confirm it has an antenna or RF input, an HDMI output, and support for the broadcast standard used where you live. Check its supported output and setup instructions as well.
- Connect the antenna. Attach the antenna’s coaxial cable to the receiver’s antenna input.
- Connect the TV. Run an HDMI cable from the receiver’s HDMI output to an available HDMI input on the TV.
- Power on and choose the input. Turn on both devices. Using the TV remote, select the HDMI input you connected to. The TV may not switch to it automatically.
- Scan for channels. Follow the receiver’s setup instructions to scan for available broadcasts.

Check older antenna wiring
Some older antennas use 300-ohm twin-lead cable rather than the 75-ohm coaxial connection found on many TVs and receivers. If that describes your antenna, you may need a 300-to-75-ohm adapter to connect the cable to a 75-ohm input. The adapter only matches the cable connection; it does not tune channels or convert the signal to HDMI. TCL’s antenna guidance describes this cable-matching case.
Troubleshoot a missing picture or channels
- No picture from the receiver: Check that the TV is set to the HDMI input the receiver uses, and that the receiver is powered on.
- Blank or unstable HDMI connection: Make sure the HDMI cable is seated at both ends. ADTH also advises checking that its box’s power adapter is connected in its troubleshooting guide.
- Receiver works, but no channels appear: Confirm the antenna is connected to the receiver’s antenna input and complete the receiver’s channel scan.
- Setup still fails: Check the model-specific troubleshooting instructions for the receiver and TV. Compatibility and setup steps depend on the devices and broadcast standard.
Don’t buy an HDMI-to-RF modulator for this setup
An HDMI-to-RF modulator does the reverse: it takes video from an HDMI source and sends it over an RF connection to a TV’s antenna input. That is not the device needed to send antenna broadcasts to a TV through HDMI. For that, the required signal path is antenna coax into a compatible tuner, followed by HDMI out to the television. The ZeeVee modulator manual illustrates the reverse arrangement.
