There is no single TCL-wide method that guarantees Wi-Fi setup without a remote. TCL’s documented Wi-Fi steps all assume you can move through the TV’s on-screen menus. What you can do depends on the TV’s platform (Roku TV or Google TV, for example), its exact model, and whether it has ever been connected. This guide covers the options that are worth trying, in order, and says plainly where TCL’s guidance stops.
Start by identifying the platform and model
Menus, phone-control support and ports all differ between TCL models. Read the model label on the back or side of the TV, or check the box or receipt. Then work out the platform: Roku TV, Google TV, Fire TV or Android TV. Every step below depends on that answer.

Seeing the standard steps shows why a missing remote is a problem. Each one needs menu navigation.

TCL says Roku TVs support Wi-Fi. For a TV that is already set up, the path is Settings > Network > Set up connection > Wireless. You then pick your network and enter its password. If your network name is hidden, TCL documents a Private network option, which lets you type the name on the on-screen keyboard. It does not remove the need to navigate to that screen.

TCL Google TV
The path is Home > Settings > Network & Internet. You then select Wi-Fi, choose your network and enter the case-sensitive password.
Other TCL platforms
TCL’s hotspot instructions also cover Fire TV and Android TV, each with its own network-menu steps. These instructions still assume you can navigate the TV.

Options to try, in order
1. Use a phone as a remote (Google TV, model-dependent)
TCL says many Google TVs include a built-in user manual with a section called “Using your phone as a TV remote.” TCL also warns: “The User Manual will vary from model to model. Not all models have this built in.” Check your model’s manual and its supported control features. Phone control may work if the TV is already on a network your phone can reach. TCL does not say a phone can control a TV that is offline, or complete first-time pairing. Treat it as something to try, not a guaranteed fix.
2. Continue Roku’s guided setup, if the screen responds
During a Roku TV’s first-time setup, TCL says the TV scans for nearby Wi-Fi networks and shows a list, then asks for the password. If you can advance that screen, you can finish the connection there. TCL does not promise that every model lets you do this without a remote, and setup flows differ by model.

3. Check for an Ethernet port
Ethernet works only on models with a LAN port, so inspect the back and sides of the TV and check your model’s specifications. If there is a port, connect a cable to your router. This avoids typing a Wi-Fi password. It may still need some on-screen input during setup, and TCL does not say every setup state will connect without user input.
4. Use the TV’s physical controls, if any
Look over the TV’s bezel, underside and back for a built-in control button. Whether such a button exists, and how far it can take you into menus, varies by model. TCL’s guidance reviewed here does not describe it, so check your model’s manual.

5. Don’t rely on a hotspot as a workaround
TCL documents connecting to a phone hotspot on Roku, Google TV, Fire TV and Android TV. You still have to open the network menus and enter the hotspot credentials. A hotspot changes which network you join. It does not replace the remote.
6. Get a replacement remote for your exact model
If you still cannot navigate, a TCL-compatible replacement remote for your exact model is the practical fallback. Match it to the model and platform. TCL’s guidance does not identify one remote that fits every TCL TV, so avoid generic universal remotes unless the listing names your model. Once you have a remote, you can follow the standard steps above.

Troubleshooting once you can control the TV
- Password: TCL notes Google TV passwords are case-sensitive, so check capitalization.
- Hidden network: on Roku, use the Private network option and type the exact name.
- Signal: move the TV or router closer, then rescan. Available bands and behavior depend on your router and TV model.
- Isolate the fault: test the home connection on another device. For Roku, TCL also suggests trying a hotspot to tell a TV problem from a home-router problem.
- Ethernet: confirm the model has a port, seat both ends of the cable, and confirm the router has internet. Try another cable or router port if you can.
