There is no single way to connect every stylus. Whether a pen works on your tablet or laptop depends on the exact pen model and the exact device model. Some pens write without any pairing, some need a physical or magnetic connection to charge and pair, and some use Bluetooth only for optional buttons or gestures. The most important check comes before pairing: confirm the pen is supported for writing on your device. Bluetooth support alone does not establish that.
Confirm compatibility before you try to connect
A stylus that advertises Bluetooth can still fail to write on a touchscreen device. Pairing and writing are separate capabilities. A pen can write without being paired, while Bluetooth may only enable shortcuts or gestures. Microsoft and Samsung both document these differences by pen and device model.

Chromebook
Google’s Chromebook Help is direct on this point. In its guidance on using a stylus with a Chromebook, it states: “Note: You can’t use Bluetooth styluses with Chromebooks.” Turning on Bluetooth will not turn a generic Bluetooth pen into a writing stylus on a Chromebook.

Built-in stylus
If your Chromebook includes a stylus, Google’s instructions say to remove it from the device before using the Chromebook’s stylus tools. The tools and apps you can use depend on the specific Chromebook and its software version, so check your model’s own page rather than assuming the same features on every machine.
USI stylus
Some Chromebooks support USI (Universal Stylus Initiative) styluses. Google publishes a list of USI-capable models, and the list names the USI version each model supports, including USI 1.0 and 2.0 for particular models. Do not generalize one model’s support to the rest of the range. Before buying, confirm that your exact Chromebook appears on the list and that the pen’s USI version matches what the device supports.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSource: Google Chromebook USI model list.
Once both checks pass, searching for “USI stylus for Chromebook” is a reasonable way to find candidates. Treat the model list as the deciding factor, not the product listing.

Bluetooth devices on a Chromebook
Your Chromebook’s Bluetooth menu connects keyboards, mice, and speakers. That does not establish writing support for a Bluetooth stylus. A pen that pairs successfully here may still be unable to write on the screen.

iPad and Apple Pencil
Apple lists compatibility separately for Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and Apple Pencil (1st generation). Verify your iPad’s exact generation and size before you buy or troubleshoot. Apple’s compatibility page is the source to check.

Apple Pencil Pro
Use the model-specific pairing guidance on Apple’s compatibility page. A magnetic attachment does not by itself confirm that a given iPad supports the Pencil Pro, so check the list before assuming it will work.

Writing support and Bluetooth support vary by Surface model and pen generation. Pairing is needed for Bluetooth functions such as top-button shortcuts. Do not assume that pairing will enable writing on a Surface that does not support inking. Check Microsoft’s compatibility table first.

Samsung S Pen
Keep writing and Air Actions separate. Air Actions and other gestures use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and Samsung says these features are unavailable on a number of listed S Pen and Galaxy combinations. Samsung’s 2023 comparison document also separates writing support from BLE and Air Action support for the combinations it covers. Use it as historical context only, and check Samsung’s current support page for the exact pen and device before you rely on a specific feature.

When the pen will not connect
Work through the checks for your connection type. These are the points Apple and Microsoft’s troubleshooting pages raise most often.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Compatibility: Confirm the exact pen model and device model appear together on the manufacturer’s compatibility list. Many failures are model mismatches, not faults.
- Power: For Apple Pencil, charge the Pencil if pairing fails. For Surface Pen, check the LED. Red or amber indicates low power, and you may need to charge the pen or replace its battery, depending on the model.
- Bluetooth: Turn Bluetooth on only where the feature you want requires it. For Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Bluetooth must be on for the magnetic attach-to-pair process.
- Retry pairing: For Surface Pen, hold the top button for 5–7 seconds. Continuous blinking means the pen is trying to pair. Blinking for 2–3 seconds can mean it is already paired to another nearby Surface, so remove the old pairing and try again.
- Adapters and cases: Check for a required adapter, such as the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter on iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16). If Apple Pencil Pro or the 2nd-generation Pencil will not attach or pair, remove any case or cover and try again.
- Chromebook writing: If a generic Bluetooth stylus pairs but does not write, that is expected. It is not a Chromebook writing stylus.

How to choose a stylus for your device
There is no universal best stylus. Compare options in this order:
- Exact device model compatibility and the pen generation or protocol it supports.
- Whether you need handwriting and drawing, or optional Bluetooth buttons, gestures, or shortcuts.
- How the pen connects and charges: magnetic attachment, direct connector or cable, replaceable battery, or a separate charger.
- Required accessories, such as the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter for the specified iPad models.
- The manufacturer’s feature table, to confirm pressure, tilt, eraser, and other features you care about.
