To connect a Ring doorbell to Wi-Fi, use the Ring app to put the doorbell in setup mode, join its temporary Ring network when prompted, then choose your home Wi-Fi and enter its password. If setup fails, identify whether the problem is the phone-to-doorbell setup link, Wi-Fi band or signal, network password, router security, internet access, or device power before resetting anything.
Before you start
- Update the Ring app and your phone or tablet.
- Have the correct home Wi-Fi password ready.
- Fully charge a battery- or solar-powered doorbell before setup.
- Keep your phone close to the doorbell. Its QR code and setup button vary by model; the code may be on the back or beneath the removable faceplate.
Ring devices need a home Wi-Fi network; Ring says they do not work with a mobile hotspot or Bluetooth. Every Ring device supports 2.4 GHz, while only some models support 5 GHz. Check the exact model and your country’s Ring guidance before relying on 5 GHz or changing router channels. Ring’s Wi-Fi network guidance explains compatibility.
Connect the doorbell in the Ring app
- Open the Ring app and select Set Up a Device. Scan the doorbell’s QR code, or choose manual setup if scanning does not work.
- Follow the app’s prompts to select the device and its location.
- When prompted, press the doorbell’s setup button. The light around the button should begin spinning as the device enters setup mode and creates a temporary Wi-Fi network.
- Let the phone join that temporary network, then return to the app. If it does not connect automatically, open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings and select the network named Ring- or Ring Setup followed by letters and numbers.
- In the app, select your home Wi-Fi network and enter its password. Keep the phone near the doorbell while setup completes.
- Allow any firmware update to finish. Do not remove power or press the setup button during an update.
For the model-specific prompts and setup details, see Ring’s setup guidance.
If the home Wi-Fi network does not appear
- Move the phone and doorbell closer to the router and check that the phone itself can connect to the home network.
- If the router lists separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks and the 5 GHz one is missing, try 2.4 GHz. Some Ring models support only that band.
- If the signal is weak where the doorbell is installed, consider a Wi-Fi extender such as Ring Chime Pro or a mesh router. These can help with coverage, but will not correct a wrong password, unsupported router security, power problem, or app setup issue.
Ring describes Chime Pro as a standalone unit that repeats the Wi-Fi signal over a greater distance and advises placing it near the Ring device. For 5 GHz channel restrictions, consult Ring’s local guidance for your exact model and region rather than applying a channel range intended for another country or model. See Ring’s Wi-Fi setup guidance and Ring’s network FAQ.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the Wi-Fi password is rejected
- On your phone, forget the home Wi-Fi network, then reconnect using the same password you entered in Ring setup. If the phone cannot reconnect, verify the password with your internet provider.
- Confirm the doorbell is powered and still in setup mode. Check the light pattern or listen for any audio prompt, then follow the app instructions again.
If Ring says the network is incompatible
An “incompatible network” warning can indicate unsupported Wi-Fi encryption, not a weak signal: the doorbell can see the network but cannot join it. Ring’s current guidance gives WPA3 as an example and identifies Video Doorbell 3, Video Doorbell 3 Plus, Video Doorbell 4, Stick Up Cam Pro, and Spotlight Cam Pro as affected models. For those cases, Ring recommends WPA2-Personal; where available, it also advises disabling PMF (Protected Management Frames). A separate 2.4 GHz WPA2 network is another option.
Router menus and device support vary. Do not change security settings across your network unless you understand the impact; ask your router manufacturer or internet provider for help. Refer to Ring’s incompatible-network guidance.

If setup cannot reach the internet
- Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi and try loading ring.com. If it does not load, investigate the internet connection rather than the doorbell’s setup alone.
- Ask your internet provider to review router firewall settings, ports, and protocols if Ring setup still cannot reach the internet.
- Disconnect extra Ethernet cables, leaving only the main internet connection.
- If more than one router is active, Ring says that can cause problems. Use one router, or ask your provider to configure bridge mode.
See Ring’s setup troubleshooting guidance for network-specific advice.
If a connected doorbell goes offline
- In the Ring app, open the device menu, then go to Device Settings > Device Health.
- Select Reconnect or Change Network and follow the prompts.
- Check that the doorbell has power and, for a battery model, that the battery is charged and working.
- Check the Wi-Fi signal at the doorbell and whether other devices can access the internet. If needed, restart the modem and router by unplugging them for 30 seconds, then reconnect power and wait for the network to return.
- If coverage is poor, improve the signal or try a different supported network or band. Consider a factory reset only after reconnection, power, and network troubleshooting have failed.
For Ring’s offline guidance, see Ring’s reconnect instructions.

Check signal strength and upload capacity
Ring uses RSSI to describe Wi-Fi signal strength. Its guidance rates 0 to −60 as great, −60 to −70 as okay, −70 to −80 as poor, and −80 or worse as very poor. The help page does not state a publication year. A weak reading at the doorbell points toward coverage; it does not by itself prove the password or router security is wrong.
Ring’s recommended upload speeds per device are listed below. The help page does not state a publication year; these are recommendations, not a guarantee, because router, internet-provider, and environmental factors also affect performance.
