To connect a receipt printer to a point-of-sale (POS) system, first confirm that the exact printer model and connection type are supported by your POS app and device. Then connect it by USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or AirPrint if available, configure it in the POS app, and run a test print. Menu paths and compatible hardware vary by platform, so use your POS provider’s instructions for the final setup.
Before connecting: check compatibility
Check the POS provider’s current printer compatibility list for the exact model and interface you plan to use. Also confirm support for the terminal or tablet and its operating system. A printer that works with one POS app may not work with another, even if it uses the same USB or network connection.

Look for any requirements involving a printer profile, driver, printer language, paper width, or the job you want to print. A device may appear connected but still produce no output—or print with cut-off or incorrectly formatted text—if those settings do not match. StoreConnect, for example, documents ESC/POS and Star PRNT support in its own POS context; these are not universal requirements. Its guidance also ties character width to the paper and template, with examples such as 32 or 42 characters for common 58 mm or 80 mm setups. See StoreConnect’s printer setup guidance.

Choose a connection method
The available methods depend on the POS platform, printer, and POS device. Use the method supported by all three, and consider whether the printer needs to serve one terminal or several.
| Method | How it connects | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet/LAN | Connect the printer to a router, switch, or network port, then discover or select it in the POS app. | Network discovery may require the POS device and printer to be on the same network. Lightspeed documents LAN sharing across multiple POS devices in its setup context; Square says its network accessories must share the POS device’s network and notes Ethernet cannot be used with Square offline payments. Those details apply to those platforms, not every POS system. Square printer guidance; Lightspeed LAN setup. |
| Wi-Fi | Join the printer and POS device to the appropriate Wi-Fi network, then discover and assign the printer in the POS app. | Follow the printer maker’s network setup instructions. The shared-network requirement and discovery behavior can vary by POS platform and network configuration. Square printer guidance. |
| USB | Plug the printer into a supported POS terminal or device, then select and configure it in the POS app. | Check that the device and operating system support the connection. Square says its USB printers are tied to one POS device; its guidance says direct USB printer connection to iOS is unsupported and Android may require USB OTG and USB Host-mode support. These are Square-specific instructions. Square printer guidance. |
| Bluetooth | Pair the printer with the POS device, then select it in the POS app. | Square advises keeping its Bluetooth printer nearby (within 10 feet), does not recommend Bluetooth because of performance, and says a printer can connect to only one POS device at a time. Treat these as Square’s guidance, not universal Bluetooth limits. Square printer guidance. |
| AirPrint | Use the POS app’s AirPrint flow to find and select a supported printer. | Both the printer and POS integration must support AirPrint. Square’s documentation gives the Brother QL-1110 and Star TSP847II as examples, but that does not establish compatibility with other POS systems. Check the current platform list before setup. Square printer guidance. |
Connect and configure the printer in your POS app
Once the hardware is connected, configure it in the POS software. The exact screens differ by provider, so do not copy another POS app’s menu path unless you are using that platform.

Other apps may ask you to select a printer model, connection mode, driver, IP address, USB path, or paper size. Lightspeed’s LAN instructions describe selecting a model and installing the recommended driver. SalesPlay’s guide asks users to choose a model and connection mode and, for network printers, enter the printer’s IP address. Run a test print and check the result
Use the POS app’s test-print control when available. Check that the paper feeds, text is readable, and the receipt fits the paper width. If the printer is meant to handle more than one kind of print job, verify the destination for each—for example, whether receipts and order tickets are assigned to the intended printer.
If your POS software exposes printer language, image mode, character width, or resolution settings, match them to the printer and paper using the platform’s instructions. StoreConnect includes those settings in its own printer setup guidance; its values should not be treated as universal defaults. StoreConnect printer setup.

Troubleshoot a printer that will not connect or print
Work through the checks that match your connection type. Change one thing at a time, then try discovery or a test print again.
- No power or no response: Check the printer’s power connection and status, then verify that the cable is plugged into the correct port.
- Ethernet or Wi-Fi printer is not found: Confirm that the printer and POS device are on the network required by your POS platform. Check the printer’s network setup and, where the app asks for it, verify the printer’s IP address.
- USB printer is not detected: Confirm that the POS terminal has a supported port and that the operating system supports the printer connection. On an applicable Android setup, check whether USB OTG and USB Host support are required. For platform-specific limits, use the POS provider’s instructions.
- Bluetooth printer is unavailable: Confirm that pairing and Bluetooth permissions are enabled, keep the devices near each other, and check whether another POS device is already connected. Square’s single-device guidance applies to its setup.
- Printer connects but output is wrong: Check the selected printer profile, model, driver, language, paper width, and print-job destination. These settings must be supported by both the POS software and printer.
- Setup still fails: Restart the printer and POS device; if the connection uses a network, restart relevant network equipment when appropriate. For a reset, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model rather than using a generic button sequence.
Square’s connection guide and its platform-specific compatibility information are useful starting points for Square setups; other POS providers publish their own supported-device and troubleshooting instructions. Square printer guidance.
