To connect a wireless printer, use the method its exact model supports: a Wireless Setup Wizard or manufacturer app for a shared Wi‑Fi network, WPS if both printer and router support it, or Wi‑Fi Direct to connect without a router. A phone hotspot may work, but compatibility depends on the printer’s supported Wi‑Fi band and security settings.
Choose the connection method your printer supports
| Method | Best for | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless Setup Wizard or manufacturer app | Connecting the printer to a home or other shared Wi‑Fi network | A compatible printer, the network name and password, and sometimes the maker’s app |
| WPS | Joining a shared Wi‑Fi network without typing its password on the printer | WPS support on both the printer and router, with the model-specific pairing sequence |
| Wi‑Fi Direct or Wireless Direct | Printing directly from a nearby phone or computer when there is no usable router network or the network blocks device discovery | A printer and client device that support direct wireless, plus the printer’s displayed or configured credentials |
These are different connection paths, not interchangeable labels. Check the printer manual or support page for your exact model before starting; available controls and supported bands vary.

Connect the printer to a Wi‑Fi network with its wizard or app
Use the printer’s control panel
- Make sure the printer is powered on and within range of the Wi‑Fi router.
- On the printer, open Setup, Network, or Wireless settings. Select Wireless Setup Wizard if it appears. Menu names vary by model.
- Choose your network name (SSID), then enter its Wi‑Fi password exactly as configured. Confirm the connection if prompted.
- Wait for the printer to report that it has joined the network. Then select that printer from the phone or computer’s print menu or the manufacturer’s app.
HP documents this wizard-based workflow for supported models in its Wi‑Fi setup instructions. Other manufacturers may use different menu names or require their app.
Use the manufacturer app when the model calls for it
Some printers can be set up through the manufacturer’s app rather than the control panel. Follow the instructions for the exact printer and app version, and allow the app to use the phone’s nearby-device or local-network permissions if requested. If the app cannot find the printer, confirm that the printer is in wireless setup mode and check the model’s troubleshooting instructions.

Connect a printer to a phone hotspot
A phone hotspot is a temporary Wi‑Fi network that shares the phone or tablet’s cellular connection. On an iPhone or iPad with Wi‑Fi + Cellular, Apple says to open Settings > Personal Hotspot and turn on Allow Others to Join. See Apple’s Personal Hotspot instructions for the device-specific steps.
Then try connecting the printer to the hotspot as you would to a Wi‑Fi router: use its wireless wizard or supported app, select the hotspot’s network name, and enter its password. A successful phone-to-hotspot connection does not guarantee printer compatibility. The printer must support the band and security configuration the hotspot provides, and the setup app must be able to discover it.

Check the printer’s Wi‑Fi band
Some specific printer families have documented 2.4 GHz constraints; those limits should not be assumed for every printer. HP says the LaserJet M109–M112 and M139–M142 families can have a 2.4 GHz discovery issue in HP Smart for iOS, and its instructions for the DeskJet 2800, 4200, and 4900 series say those printers connect only to 2.4 GHz. Consult the relevant HP LaserJet troubleshooting page or HP DeskJet troubleshooting page for those named families. For another model, check its own specifications and the hotspot’s available band rather than extrapolating from these examples.

Connect using WPS
WPS (Wi‑Fi Protected Setup) can join a printer to a router without manually entering the network password, but only when both devices support it. Button sequences differ by model, and some routers do not offer WPS.

- Check the printer manual and router documentation to confirm WPS support and find the correct sequence.
- Put the printer into WPS pairing mode using the model’s specified control-panel option or button sequence.
- Press the router’s WPS button within the printer’s pairing window. HP’s general instructions specify a two-minute window for supported setups; follow your printer’s manual if it gives different timing.
- Wait for the printer’s connection confirmation. Some models require an additional confirmation on the printer; Canon’s MG5320 instructions, for example, describe a confirmation step within two minutes.
See HP’s WPS instructions and the Canon MG5320 WPS instructions for those model-specific procedures. Do not assume a router has a WPS button or that another printer uses the same sequence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Print without a router using Wi‑Fi Direct
Wi‑Fi Direct, sometimes called Wireless Direct, creates a direct wireless connection between the printer and a phone or computer rather than joining both devices to a shared router network. It can be useful when there is no available router network or when guest-network isolation prevents devices from discovering one another. It is available only on models that support it.

Troubleshoot when the printer cannot find Wi‑Fi
- Confirm wireless capability and method support. Verify that the exact printer model has Wi‑Fi and supports the chosen setup route. A printer without WPS cannot be paired through WPS, for example.
- Check the network name, password, and band. Re-enter the password carefully and confirm that the printer supports the band the router or hotspot is broadcasting. Specific HP models have documented 2.4 GHz constraints, but the exact model documentation governs.
- For WPS, verify support at both ends and the pairing window. Use the model’s sequence and complete the router-button step within the specified time.
- Restore wireless setup mode if it has expired. HP documents restoring Wi‑Fi setup mode for supported printers; the controls vary by touchscreen and model. Use the instructions for your printer rather than a generic button combination.
- Consider network isolation. On a guest network, devices may be prevented from discovering one another even when both are connected. If the printer supports Wi‑Fi Direct, connect the client device directly instead.
- If a hotspot still fails, treat that as a compatibility issue to check, not proof of a printer fault. Compare the hotspot’s settings with the printer’s supported bands and security, or use a compatible router network or Wi‑Fi Direct if available.
