How to Connect a Local LLM to Grafana or Prometheus Securely

Connect a local model to Grafana or Prometheus through a private OpenAI-compatible endpoint or MCP server, while limiting network access, credentials, and monitoring permissions.

You can connect a local LLM to self-hosted monitoring without making your monitoring stack public. For Grafana, use its LLM app with a private OpenAI-compatible model endpoint, or connect an MCP-capable client through a Grafana or Prometheus MCP server. In either case, the integration adds a service boundary and credentials that need deliberate network, permission, and secret-storage controls.

Choose the integration that matches what the LLM needs to do

There is no single setup for every monitoring product or local model. The documented examples here use Grafana and Prometheus; check compatibility with the exact versions you run.

Pattern Best fit Key considerations
Grafana LLM app with a custom provider Grafana’s LLM features need to call a local OpenAI-compatible inference endpoint. Check Grafana and plugin version compatibility, API compatibility, authentication, and the Grafana features you intend to use. The app acts as a proxy for authenticated requests and stores API keys. Grafana LLM app documentation and configuration documentation.
MCP server An MCP-capable LLM client needs to invoke monitoring tools. Choose between Grafana operations and direct Prometheus queries; protect the MCP endpoint and limit the authority available to its process. Grafana MCP server and Prometheus MCP server.

Use Grafana’s LLM app for Grafana-native features

The Grafana LLM app documents custom OpenAI-compatible APIs, including local providers such as Ollama, vLLM, LM Studio, and LiteLLM. For self-managed Grafana, install the app, configure its custom endpoint, and map the models you want to use. The documentation says custom-provider support was added in plugin version 0.10.0; verify the setup against your deployed Grafana and plugin releases.

Use MCP when the client should call monitoring tools

The Grafana MCP server can be run against self-managed Grafana and exposes tools for areas such as dashboards, data sources, alerting, and incidents. It uses a Grafana service account token. The Prometheus MCP server is focused on Prometheus access and documents connecting a local Ollama model. Select the server based on whether the client needs Grafana operations or Prometheus queries—not simply because it supports MCP.

An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.

Secure the connection in layers

Think of the path as a chain: LLM client, integration or MCP server, monitoring service, and inference endpoint. Keep every link private where possible, and grant each component only the access it needs.

  1. Keep service endpoints on trusted networks. Place the inference endpoint, Grafana, Prometheus, and any MCP server on a network segment reachable only by the intended clients and services. Prometheus warns against exposing its HTTP endpoints to publicly accessible networks without appropriate measures. See the Prometheus security model.
  2. Limit access to the MCP endpoint. Treat an MCP server as a privileged service, not as a harmless local helper. The Prometheus MCP server warns that anyone who can reach its endpoint may query Prometheus with at least the default client’s credentials. Restrict reachability with network controls or web configuration, and do not expose the endpoint broadly.
  3. Constrain Grafana’s data-source proxy. Grafana notes that services reachable from its host or local network may be vulnerable through the data source proxy. Use datasource URL allowlists, firewall rules, or a controlled proxy to restrict outbound destinations. See Grafana data source management documentation.
  4. Protect credentials in transit. Prometheus documents that Basic Authentication without TLS sends usernames and passwords in cleartext. Use TLS or a protected tunnel whenever credentials cross a network; authentication alone does not encrypt the connection.
  5. Store secrets in designated secret fields. For Grafana provisioning, use encrypted secure JSON settings for API keys, passwords, and TLS material. Custom header values belong in secureJsonData, not ordinary configuration fields. See Grafana provisioning documentation.
  6. Give the integration only necessary permissions. Use a deliberately scoped Grafana service account token for Grafana MCP, and review both the monitoring permissions and the actions exposed to the LLM client. Available permission granularity depends on the deployed version, so validate it rather than assuming a particular scope model.
  7. Control what enters prompts and logs. Monitoring data can reveal infrastructure details, and model output can contain sensitive information. Keep query permissions and network routes narrow, and review what the client sends to the model and retains. Logging and retention behavior depends on the particular client, provider, and deployment; check their configuration and documentation.

Deployment checks before connecting a client

  • Confirm the local model server’s API format matches the integration. An OpenAI-compatible endpoint is a documented option for Grafana’s LLM app, but compatibility should be checked for the particular provider and model server.
  • Verify the versions of Grafana, the LLM app, the MCP server, and the inference server against their current documentation.
  • Test endpoint reachability from only the intended hosts; check that Grafana or the MCP process cannot reach unrelated internal services.
  • Use test credentials and read-only access where the task permits it, then confirm that unauthorized clients cannot query the monitoring service through the bridge.
  • Review logs and prompt handling with the actual client and provider before sending sensitive metrics, labels, dashboards, or incident details.

What this setup does not establish

The documented integration paths do not determine hardware requirements, model quality, throughput, or a universally safe permission boundary. Those depend on the selected model, workload, monitoring data, client, and network design. Decide those limits for your environment and verify the relevant current product documentation before deployment.
