How to Connect a Local AI Agent to Local Language Models and APIs

Run a local inference server, point an agent’s model client to it, and verify API compatibility and model support before relying on tools.

To connect a local AI agent to a local language model, run an inference server, download a model, and configure the agent’s model client to use that server’s endpoint. The agent framework runs the reasoning loop and invokes tools; the model server generates responses. With Ollama, the native API is at http://localhost:11434/api, and an OpenAI-compatible endpoint is at http://localhost:11434/v1. Compatibility and tool use depend on both the endpoint and the model.

How to connect a local AI agent to a local LLM

  1. Choose a model-serving runtime. Ollama is one option; Docker’s local-model guide also describes vLLM and LocalAI. These serve models through APIs. They are distinct from the agent framework that manages prompts, tool calls, and execution.
  2. Start the runtime and download a model. For example, Microsoft’s Agent Framework guide uses ollama pull llama3.2. A model needs to be downloaded and the server running before an agent can use local inference. Ollama’s native local endpoint defaults to http://localhost:11434; its chat endpoint is http://localhost:11434/api/chat. See Ollama’s API documentation and Microsoft’s Ollama agent guide.
  3. Configure the model client. Use the runtime’s native API or client library if it covers the features you need. If your application already uses an OpenAI client, Ollama’s OpenAI-compatible base URL is http://localhost:11434/v1. Its example uses api_key="ollama"; the local server ignores that key.
  4. Put an agent framework around the client. Create the agent with the local model client, then use the framework or your application to run the agent loop. Microsoft’s examples show both an Ollama client and an OpenAI client pointed at Ollama. The server supplies inference; the framework or application coordinates the agent.
  5. Add tools and test the features you need. Define local functions or integrations in the application/framework, then verify that the selected model can call them. Test the exact feature path—such as streaming, structured output, context settings, and state handling—rather than assuming support from a compatible endpoint.

How to use Ollama with an AI agent

Microsoft’s Agent Framework documentation provides Python and .NET examples using Ollama. The essential configuration is a model client aimed at the local Ollama server, plus an agent created from that client. For the native route, use the framework’s Ollama integration and the local server address, typically http://localhost:11434. For an OpenAI-client route, set its base URL to http://localhost:11434/v1 and select the model name available in Ollama.

The model name and endpoint can be overridden in the framework configuration. Check the guide for the exact package setup and code for your chosen language: Microsoft Agent Framework: Ollama. The local runtime must have the selected model available; a client configuration alone does not download it.

Can you use the OpenAI SDK with a local model?

Yes, when the local server exposes an OpenAI-compatible API and the client supports configuring a base URL. Ollama documents the local endpoint as http://localhost:11434/v1; its example supplies api_key="ollama", which the local server ignores. This lets an application reuse an OpenAI client interface, but it does not turn Ollama into the hosted OpenAI service or guarantee that every OpenAI API feature is available.

  • QUAD SCREEN 8K DISPLAY SUPPORT - EVO-X2 AI Mini PC support 4-screen 4K/8K output via HDMI 2.1 (8K@60Hz), DisplayPort 1.4 (4K@60Hz), and dual USB 4 40Gbps Transfer speed (supporting PD3.0/DP1.4/DATA). Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Ollama describes its OpenAI-compatible surface as a subset and documents supported and unsupported fields. Before relying on a feature, compare it with the current Ollama compatibility documentation. Docker’s guide also shows configuration patterns for Ollama, vLLM, and LocalAI, but compatibility details vary by server; an OpenAI-style URL alone is not proof of feature parity. See Docker’s local-model agent guide.

What the agent framework does—and what the model server does

The model server loads a model and handles inference requests. The agent runtime or application supplies the surrounding orchestration: instructions, repeated model/tool interactions, state, and tool execution. A framework can make it easier to build that loop, but it does not make the model server itself an agent.

Sensitive workloads can remain on-device, while cloud AI adds larger models and deeper reasoning when needed.

OpenAI’s comparison of its Agents API, Agents SDK, and Responses API describes different orchestration and execution approaches; its guide describes the SDK as running inside the application. Those options are useful to distinguish conceptually, but a local model connection still depends on a client and endpoint that the application can configure. See OpenAI’s agents guide.

How to connect an agent to an external API

Keep the model endpoint, external-service credentials, tool implementation, and agent state as separate configuration concerns. A local function or integration can call an application API, while the local model endpoint only provides inference. The external request is still governed by that service’s own authentication and data-handling rules; local inference does not make a remote API call local.

Implement the API call as a tool in the application or framework, store its credentials according to that provider’s guidance, and give the agent only the tool access it needs. Consult the specific API provider’s current documentation for authentication and request handling; the local-model setup does not establish those details.

Local model connection options

Ollama native API/client Calls Ollama through its own local API or libraries; the chat endpoint is http://localhost:11434/api/chat. Requires the model to be available in Ollama; choose it when its native integration covers your needs. Ollama documentation
Ollama OpenAI-compatible API Lets an OpenAI client address Ollama at http://localhost:11434/v1. Ollama supports a subset of the OpenAI API, not guaranteed full parity. Ollama documentation
Microsoft Agent Framework with Ollama Creates agents using native or OpenAI-compatible Ollama clients; documentation includes Python and .NET. Function calling depends on the selected model. Microsoft guide
Other local serving layers Docker identifies vLLM and LocalAI as additional examples alongside Ollama. Compare deployment needs and each server’s actual API feature coverage; the examples do not establish universal compatibility. Docker guide

Common connection problems to check

  • Connection refused or no response: Confirm the local inference server is running and the client points to the correct local address and API path.
  • Model not found: Pull the model into the runtime and use its available name in the agent configuration. Microsoft’s example command is ollama pull llama3.2.
  • Tool calls do not work: Check both framework/client support and whether the specific model supports function calling. API compatibility alone does not establish tool capability.
  • A feature behaves differently than expected: Inspect the serving layer’s compatibility documentation for that exact feature and field. Ollama’s OpenAI surface is a subset.
  • Remote API request fails: Troubleshoot the tool’s implementation, credentials, and provider-specific requirements separately from the local model endpoint.

Hardware requirements depend on the model and workload. The cited setup guidance does not establish a single minimum RAM, VRAM, or storage figure that applies to all local agents.
