USB and Bluetooth are alternatives. Personal Hotspot shares cellular data; it cannot pass along a Wi-Fi connection your iPhone is already using.
Connect your laptop over Wi-Fi

On your iPhone, open Settings and tap Personal Hotspot. If you don’t see it, check under Cellular or Mobile Service. Turn on Allow Others to Join for a Windows laptop or any device not using Instant Hotspot.

On the laptop, open Wi-Fi settings. On a Mac, choose the iPhone from the Wi-Fi menu; on Windows, select it from the available Wi-Fi networks as you would any other network.

Enter the password shown in the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot settings if asked. Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account, or set up through Family Sharing, may connect with Instant Hotspot without asking for the password.

Open a webpage on the laptop to confirm the connection. The laptop is using the iPhone’s cellular data, subject to the carrier plan’s allowance and terms.
If Personal Hotspot is missing or unavailable, make sure mobile data is on and check with your carrier about hotspot support and plan requirements.
Choose another connection method

Use a USB cable

Connect the iPhone and laptop with the iPhone’s supplied cable or another cable compatible with both devices’ ports.

On Windows, install Apple Devices or iTunes before connecting. If the iPhone asks whether to trust the computer, tap Trust and enter the iPhone passcode if requested. On a Mac, allow the accessory if a prompt appears.

Check that the laptop is online. Cable connectors vary by device, so confirm both ports before choosing a cable.

Connect using Bluetooth

Turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone and laptop. On the iPhone, turn on Allow Others to Join and open its Bluetooth settings; leave that screen open while the laptop discovers it.

On a Mac, open System Settings > Bluetooth, then select the iPhone. Menu names may differ in older macOS versions. Confirm that the pairing code shown on each device matches.

On Windows, use the PC maker’s instructions to create a Bluetooth network connection, then select the iPhone in the laptop’s Bluetooth settings and confirm the matching pairing code if prompted.

Why the iPhone hotspot may not appear or connect

Hotspot is missing or dimmed: Check that mobile data is enabled. Carrier support and eligibility vary, so ask the carrier whether your plan allows Personal Hotspot.

The iPhone is not visible: For a Windows laptop or other device not using Instant Hotspot, make sure Allow Others to Join is on. For Bluetooth discovery, keep the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings open.

The laptop cannot join: Check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on as applicable, and keep the devices within 10 metres (30 feet) of each other. Recheck the hotspot password if connecting over Wi-Fi.

It is connected but has no internet: Remember that Personal Hotspot uses cellular data, not the iPhone’s Wi-Fi connection. Check cellular service and your data plan.

The connection still fails: Install current software on both devices, restart them, then try again. You can also turn on Maximize Compatibility in the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot settings; Apple warns this may reduce performance for connected devices.

A Continuity feature is affected: A VPN configuration that blocks local networking can interfere with some Apple Continuity features.

What to know about data, fees, and device limits
Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular connection rather than extending its Wi-Fi network. Carrier eligibility, any additional fees, and the number of devices that can connect depend on the carrier’s terms and the iPhone model; Apple does not specify one universal device limit. Check your carrier’s current plan details before relying on a particular allowance or connection count.
