To project a laptop onto an interactive whiteboard, connect its video output to the projector or display, select that input, then choose whether to duplicate or extend the laptop desktop. To use the board’s pen or touch controls, set up its separate interactive connection—often USB—and enable the model’s required driver or software. The exact ports and steps depend on the laptop, board and projector.
Choose the connection that fits your equipment
Projection and interactivity may use different connections. HDMI or VGA can carry the image while a separate USB connection carries pen or touch input on supported systems. A cable that gives you a picture does not necessarily enable the board’s interactive features.

For example, Epson’s instructions for the BrightLink EB-725Wi and EB-735Fi describe HDMI, VGA, USB or network options for the computer image, with a separate USB connection for interaction when video uses HDMI or a Computer input. Identify the ports and requirements first
- Record the laptop’s operating system and model, and the interactive board and projector or display models.
- Consult the manufacturers’ current connection instructions for each exact model. Confirm which port carries video and which port supports touch or pen control.
- Check the laptop’s available video output and the display’s input. Choose a matching cable or a compatible adapter if needed. Do not assume a USB-C connector supports video or that one adapter works with every system.
- If using wireless projection, check the receiver’s supported method and the laptop’s wireless-display compatibility before relying on it.
For older SMART Board systems, the board’s USB connection does not replace the laptop-to-projector video connection. SMART’s setup guides explain the USB and software requirements for the SMART Board 600 and D600 and the SMART Board 800.

Connect and configure the laptop
- Connect the video path. Attach the laptop’s supported video output to the projector or display. If using a dock or adapter, connect it as specified by its manufacturer.
- Select the display input. Use the projector or display controls to choose the input that matches the connected port, such as HDMI or VGA.
- Connect the interactive path if needed. For a wired projector setup, connect the specified USB cable between the laptop and the correct interactive-system port. Some systems use a supported network connection or model-specific wireless hardware instead.
- Choose a laptop display mode. In Windows, press
Windows+Pand select Duplicate to show the same desktop on both screens, or Extend to use the board as additional desktop space. The available choices can vary by Windows version. - Enable the board’s software or interactive mode. Install or launch the driver or software required for the specific system. For the BrightLink models in Epson’s guide, Mac PC Interactive mode requires the Easy Interactive Driver; finger touch on those models requires an optional Touch Unit. SMART’s guides explain that drivers enable full interactive features on the referenced boards.
- Calibrate and test. Use the model’s calibration or orientation procedure if the pen or touch point does not match the projected image. Test both the picture and interactive control before presenting.
On the Epson models covered by its guide, HDMI3 may map to USB-B2 by default. That port assignment is specific to those models; check the manual for your own equipment before connecting cables.
When wireless projection makes sense
Wireless mirroring can avoid a long video cable, but it is only an option when the laptop and receiver support a compatible wireless display method. On a compatible Windows laptop, press Windows+K to open the available wireless displays and select the receiver. Microsoft documents this method for compatible displays in its screen mirroring and projection guide.

A wireless picture does not by itself establish that board touch or pen input will work. Confirm whether the receiver and interactive system support a separate control connection or a wireless interactive workflow. If you use a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, Microsoft’s setup instructions specify an HDMI connection to the display and USB power; see Microsoft’s adapter guide.
Fix the most common problems
No image or “No Input”
- Confirm the laptop and projector or display are powered on and awake.
- Reseat the video cable and check that it connects to the intended ports.
- Select the matching input on the projector or display.
- Enable external-display output on the laptop. In Windows, press
Windows+Pand choose a display mode. - For wireless projection, confirm that the receiver appears and that the laptop supports its connection method.
Blurry, distorted or incorrectly sized image
- Set the computer’s output resolution to match the projector’s native resolution; consult the projector manual for that value. SMART recommends matching the output to the projector’s native resolution for its documented systems.
- Adjust the projector’s position, zoom and focus.
- If the image is visible but touch coordinates are off, run the board’s calibration or orientation procedure.
Picture works but touch or pens do not
- Check that the interactive USB cable is connected to the correct port, not just to a port that provides video or power.
- Confirm the required manufacturer driver is installed and running, or that the projector’s interactive mode is enabled.
- Check the board’s power or status indicators, then complete calibration if required.
- For the Epson models in the cited instructions, Mac PC Interactive mode requires the Easy Interactive Driver. Those instructions also note slower response with USB Display and a default HDMI3-to-USB-B2 mapping; these details do not apply universally.
Wireless receiver does not appear or connect
- Verify that the laptop and receiver support the same wireless display method.
- For Microsoft’s Wireless Display Adapter, check that HDMI is connected to the display and USB power is supplied. Microsoft also recommends checking the adapter’s firmware and its connection and power when troubleshooting.
- Account for operating-system version: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Check Microsoft’s current guidance and the laptop’s compatibility before depending on a particular wireless workflow.

Choose cables and adapters only after checking compatibility
An HDMI cable is appropriate only if the laptop and display have compatible HDMI connections and the cable can reach between them. Touch may still require a separate USB cable. If using a USB cable for a SMART system, match the connector and length to the specific board and installation. For any adapter, check its supported resolution, power needs and connector direction, as well as whether interactivity needs another link. The manufacturers’ model instructions—not the cable type alone—determine what works.
