How to Connect a Laptop to a TV: HDMI, USB-C, and Adapters Explained

Use HDMI when both devices have it; otherwise, check laptop video-port support and choose a compatible adapter or Miracast connection.

To connect a laptop to a TV, run an HDMI cable from the laptop’s HDMI output to a TV HDMI input, then select that input on the TV. If the laptop lacks HDMI, use an adapter that matches a video-capable port—often USB-C or Thunderbolt—to HDMI. The shape of a USB-C port alone does not guarantee it can send video.

Choose the right connection for your laptop and TV

Check the laptop’s exact ports and specifications, then check which inputs the TV has. The laptop needs a video output; the TV needs a matching input or an adapter path to one. For USB-C, confirm that the particular port supports display output, and verify that any adapter and cable support the resolution and refresh rate you want.

HDMI HDMI HDMI cable Use an available TV HDMI input and select it.
USB-C or Thunderbolt with display output HDMI USB-C-to-HDMI adapter and, if not included, an HDMI cable Confirm video support on that laptop port and check the adapter’s supported display modes. Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, for example, requires a separately purchased HDMI cable. Apple’s adapter details list its ports and requirements.
Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 2 HDMI Compatible Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter or cable Check that the laptop has the relevant port and that the adapter supports the needed display mode. Apple documents this path for applicable Mac models. Apple’s HDMI connection guidance covers Mac adapter options.
Windows PC with Miracast support Compatible Miracast TV or receiver Wireless connection; a separate wireless adapter may be used Both the PC and TV or receiver must support Miracast. Microsoft’s projection guide explains the Windows steps.

Connect with HDMI

  1. Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the laptop’s HDMI output and the other to an HDMI input on the TV.
  2. Turn on the TV and use its input/source control to select the HDMI input where the cable is connected. Input names and menu steps differ by TV manufacturer.
  3. If the picture does not appear, check that both ends are seated and that the selected TV input matches the port you used.

Connect a laptop with USB-C to an HDMI TV

A USB-C connector may support charging or data without supporting video. Microsoft cautions that the computer’s hardware and software, the specific USB-C port, and the connected device or dongle must support the relevant Alternate Mode. See Microsoft’s USB-C guidance and check the specifications for your exact laptop model before choosing an adapter.

  1. Confirm that the laptop’s USB-C or Thunderbolt port supports display output.
  2. Connect a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter to that port.
  3. Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV. Some adapters include an HDMI socket but not the cable.
  4. Select the TV’s corresponding HDMI input, then set the laptop to use the external screen if needed.

Some multiport adapters also offer charging pass-through or USB ports. Those extra features do not establish that the adapter supports a particular resolution or refresh rate: check its specifications alongside the laptop, cable, and TV capabilities.

Mac: adjust display settings

Apple says a Mac detects a display when it has power and is connected properly. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays; on older macOS versions, the menu may say System Preferences. There you can adjust supported resolution and refresh rate and arrange displays. Available modes and the number of external displays vary by Mac model and adapter. See Apple’s Mac display setup guide.

Connect wirelessly from Windows

Wireless projection is an alternative to a cable when both the Windows PC and the TV or receiver support Miracast. In Windows 11, turn on the TV or display, press Windows+K, and select the receiver. If you are using a wireless adapter, connect it to the display as its manufacturer directs. If the receiver does not appear, confirm Miracast support on both sides; this connection cannot be assumed to work with every TV or laptop.

  • CHECK YOUR DEVICE FIRST( USB-C MALE TO HDMI FEMALE): This adapter works with USB Type C ports that support DP Alt Mode. Want to be sure before you buy? Check your device specs - not every USB-C port sends video.
  • ONE-WAY VIDEO & AUDIO OUTPUT: This adapter sends video and audio from your USB-C device to an HDMI display. It does not support charging, and it is not designed for HDMI-to-USB-C direction.
  • 4K@60Hz USB-C TO HDMI ADAPTER CABLE: Get clear 4K picture at 60Hz from a compatible USB-C laptop or tablet. It also works with older HDMI 1.4, 1.3 and 1.2 screens.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, NO SETUP: Turn your USB-C port into an HDMI port with no drivers and no installation. What you see depends on your device and your screen.
  • EXTEND YOUR REACH: Going from USB-C male to HDMI female lets you keep using the HDMI cable you already have, and place your laptop or phone where you want it.

The USB-C adapter is not recognized

Try the laptop’s confirmed video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt port and connect the adapter directly while troubleshooting rather than through a hub or dock. Check that the cable and adapter support the required video capability. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance explains why port, cable, or Alternate Mode support can prevent a connection.

The image is blurry, cropped, or using the wrong refresh rate

First check the limits of the laptop, adapter, cable, and TV as a complete chain; the connector type alone does not determine a supported mode. Then review the operating system’s display settings and the TV’s picture or overscan controls. Apple notes that Mac display capabilities depend on the model and adapter details in its display setup guide.
