The FPS you want to play must also accept keyboard-and-mouse input; each game’s developer makes that decision. Connect the peripherals, adjust the PS5’s accessory settings, then verify support in the game’s own controls or support information.
What “supported” means on PlayStation
Sony describes USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice as supported at the PS5 system level. That means the console can recognize compatible devices for system navigation and other functions. It does not guarantee that a particular first-person shooter will use those devices during play.

PlayStation’s official FAQ puts the distinction plainly: “Yes, USB and Bluetooth keyboards and mice are supported at a system level, though game developers will decide whether to support at a game level.” The FAQ was published on PlayStation.Blog on November 9, 2020. Treat that as two separate checks:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Peripheral check: the keyboard or mouse must be compatible with the PS5 and connect successfully.
- Game check: the individual FPS must include keyboard-and-mouse support in its gameplay controls.
A successful Bluetooth pairing or a device that works in the PS5 menus confirms only the first check. If the game does not respond, look in that game’s control options, support pages, or developer documentation rather than repeatedly pairing the hardware.

What you need before starting
Use a USB keyboard and mouse, a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or one of each. For Bluetooth hardware, have the device manual available because the method for entering pairing mode differs by model. Sony’s setup guidance does not promise that every keyboard or mouse will work, so check the manufacturer’s instructions and compatibility information before assuming a device is suitable.
- A PS5 console with access to its Settings menu.
- A wired USB keyboard and/or mouse with a cable that reaches the console, or wireless devices that support Bluetooth pairing.
- The keyboard or mouse charged or supplied with working batteries when applicable.
- The specific FPS installed, plus its controls or support information so you can confirm game-level support.
Do not use the Bluetooth device’s appearance in the PS5 search list as proof of compatibility. Sony warns that devices incompatible with PS5 can still appear in the results.
Connect a USB keyboard and mouse
1. Plug in the devices
Connect the keyboard and mouse directly to USB ports on the PS5. If you are using only one device, connect that device first; if you are using both, connect each one before opening the game.
2. Allow the PS5 to recognize them
Once connected, use the console menus to check whether keystrokes and pointer movement are recognized. Recognition at this stage shows that the console sees the hardware, but it still does not establish that your chosen FPS accepts the input.
3. Configure the accessory options
Open Settings > Accessories > Other Accessories. Keyboard options include language selection and controls for key-repeat delay and repeat rate. Mouse options include left- or right-handed operation and pointer speed. The same settings can also be reached through Accessories in the control center.
4. Check the game
Launch the FPS only after the devices are recognized and configured. Open the game’s controls or support information and look for an explicit keyboard-and-mouse option. If the game lists only controller input, the PS5 cannot add support through a system setting.
Pair a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse with PS5
1. Put the device into pairing mode
Activate Bluetooth pairing mode on the keyboard or mouse. The button, key combination, indicator light, and timing vary by device, so follow its manual. Keep the device close enough to the console for the initial discovery process.
2. Open the Bluetooth accessory list
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Choose General.
- Open Bluetooth Accessories.
3. Select the device
Choose the keyboard or mouse when it appears in the list. A name appearing here does not guarantee that the device is compatible; Sony specifically notes that incompatible devices may still be shown in search results.

4. Confirm the registered accessory
After pairing, the device should appear under Registered Accessories. Test a few keys or move the pointer in the PS5 interface before opening an FPS. This separates a pairing problem from a game-support problem.
5. Reconnect when automatic reconnection fails
Sony says a paired device should reconnect automatically when both the console and the device are switched on. If it does not, open the registered-accessory list, select the keyboard or mouse, and choose Connect.
Adjust keyboard and mouse behavior on PS5
Keyboard language
Go to Settings > Accessories > Other Accessories and select the keyboard language that matches your physical keyboard. This matters when the characters printed on the keycaps do not correspond to the characters produced on screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Key-repeat delay and rate
The keyboard settings include key-repeat delay and key-repeat rate. Delay controls how long a key must remain pressed before repeating begins; rate controls how quickly repeated characters appear. These are console settings, not an FPS sensitivity control. Change them only if text entry or menu navigation feels wrong.
Mouse handedness
Use the mouse settings to choose left- or right-handed operation. This changes the button assignment expected by the PS5 interface and can prevent a primary click from being on the wrong side for your setup.
Pointer speed
PS5 also provides a pointer-speed setting. It affects pointer movement in supported system interfaces. An FPS may expose its own look or aim controls separately, so do not assume that changing the system pointer speed changes in-game aiming.
Confirm that your FPS accepts keyboard and mouse input
There is no universal PlayStation switch that forces every game to accept these controls. After connecting the hardware, check the chosen game’s own controls menu and support information. Look for a keyboard-and-mouse section, key-binding options, mouse or pointer controls, or an explicit developer statement.
Use this order when testing:
- Verify that the keyboard or mouse works in the PS5 interface.
- Confirm that it appears under the PS5’s registered accessories when using Bluetooth.
- Open the FPS’s control settings and look for keyboard-and-mouse choices.
- Enter a mode where movement or menu navigation is possible and test a small number of inputs.
- If the game still ignores the devices, consult the game’s support information. Pairing the hardware again will not add a feature the developer did not implement.
Support can also differ by game version, mode, or platform policy. Therefore, rely on the title’s current documentation rather than assuming that keyboard support on one FPS carries over to another.

Troubleshoot the connection by symptom
The Bluetooth device never appears
- Return the keyboard or mouse to pairing mode according to its manual.
- Open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories again and rescan.
- Confirm that the device is not already actively connected elsewhere if its manual says it supports only one active connection.
- Check the device instructions and PS5 compatibility information. A device can be visible in the search results yet still be incompatible.
The device appears, but pairing does not complete
Cancel the attempt, place the device back into pairing mode, and select it again. If it was previously registered, select it under Registered Accessories and choose Connect. Follow any pairing instructions shown by the device itself; the PS5 menu cannot replace a model-specific pairing procedure.
The device paired but will not reconnect
Turn on both the PS5 and the keyboard or mouse, then open the registered-accessory list and select Connect. Sony’s guidance says automatic reconnection should occur when both are on, so a manual connection is the first recovery step when that does not happen.
The PS5 menus respond, but the FPS does not
This symptom usually points to game-level support rather than a console pairing failure. Recheck the game’s controls or support information. The developer, not the PS5 system menu, determines whether keyboard and mouse can control gameplay.

Keys produce unexpected characters
Open Settings > Accessories > Other Accessories and select the appropriate keyboard language. The layout setting should match the physical arrangement of the keys.
The mouse buttons feel reversed
In the same settings area, change the handedness option to left-handed or right-handed operation as appropriate. Test the primary and secondary buttons in the PS5 interface before testing the game.
Pointer movement is too slow or too fast in menus
Adjust pointer speed under Settings > Accessories > Other Accessories. Keep in mind that an FPS can expose separate in-game aim settings; a comfortable system pointer speed does not prove that the game’s aiming behavior is configured.
A wired device is not recognized
Disconnect and reconnect the USB keyboard or mouse, then test it in the PS5 interface. Check the device’s own instructions and compatibility information, because Sony’s support guidance does not guarantee that every USB peripheral works with PS5. If the console does recognize it but the game does not, follow the game-support branch above.
USB versus Bluetooth: which connection should you choose?
Both connection types are supported at the PS5 system level. The practical choice is about your hardware and setup, not a guaranteed difference in FPS support. A game that does not support keyboard and mouse will not become compatible merely because you switch from USB to Bluetooth.

| Connection | Setup path | Useful when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB | Plug the keyboard and/or mouse into the PS5, then check the console interface and accessory settings. | You want a direct wired connection and do not want to perform Bluetooth pairing. | Compatibility is still device-specific, and game-level support remains a developer decision. |
| Bluetooth | Put the device in pairing mode, then use Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories. | You want to avoid a cable and your device supports Bluetooth pairing. | Devices that are incompatible may still appear in the search list; a paired device may occasionally require manual reconnection. |
Choose the method your keyboard or mouse manual supports reliably. If both methods are available, start with the one that is easiest to test and reconnect in your playing position.
A practical FPS setup sequence
Use this checklist whenever you add a new keyboard, mouse, or game:
- Check compatibility first. Read the peripheral instructions and confirm that the device is intended to work with PS5.
- Connect the hardware. Plug in USB devices, or put Bluetooth devices into pairing mode.
- Complete the PS5 connection. For Bluetooth, use the exact four-level menu path to Bluetooth Accessories and confirm the device under Registered Accessories.
- Set the basics. Choose keyboard language, key-repeat behavior, mouse handedness, and pointer speed under Other Accessories.
- Verify the console layer. Test keys and pointer movement in the PS5 interface.
- Verify the game layer. Read the FPS’s controls or support information and look for explicit keyboard-and-mouse support.
- Test in the game’s controls area. If the game provides key-binding or mouse options, use those to confirm that it is receiving input before starting a match.
- Diagnose by layer. A failure in the PS5 menus is a peripheral or connection issue; a working PS5 interface with an unresponsive game is a game-support issue.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: treating a device listed in Bluetooth Accessories as proof that every installed game will accept it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuying and compatibility guidance
If you are shopping for a keyboard and mouse for PS5 FPS play, prioritize clearly documented PS5 compatibility and a connection method you understand. A product description that says “USB keyboard and mouse for PS5” describes the hardware category, not guaranteed support in a particular shooter.
- For a wired setup, check the device instructions for PS5 and USB requirements.
- For a wireless setup, confirm that the keyboard or mouse supports Bluetooth pairing and learn its pairing-mode procedure.
- Keep the manual available until pairing and reconnection have been tested.
- Do not select a device solely because its name appears in the PS5 Bluetooth search results; Sony warns that incompatible devices can appear there.
- Check the FPS developer’s own controls or support information before buying specifically for that title.
No official source in the available guidance provides a complete compatibility matrix covering every peripheral, PlayStation generation, or FPS. The documented setup therefore applies specifically to PS5, and game support must be checked title by title.
What the PS5 settings can—and cannot—change
The PS5 can manage the console-side behavior of a connected keyboard and mouse: language, key-repeat delay, key-repeat rate, handedness, and pointer speed. Those settings help the system interpret the devices and make menus usable.
They cannot add keyboard-and-mouse controls to an FPS that does not implement them. They also do not establish that a title offers key rebinding, mouse aiming, or support in every game mode. Those capabilities belong to the game’s software and documentation.
Quick Recap
