Connect a suitable output on the headphone amplifier to the powered speakers’ line-level inputs. A documented variable preamp output is usually the most straightforward option because it lets the amplifier control speaker volume. A fixed line output can also work, but volume must then be controlled at the speakers or by another downstream device. Check the manuals for both models: output labels and behavior differ.
Check the outputs and inputs first
Look at the headphone amplifier’s manual and rear panel to identify which outputs it provides and whether each is fixed-level or variable. Prefer an output the manufacturer identifies as a preamp output or as suitable for powered speakers. Yamaha’s PRE/LINE OUT guidance distinguishes a PRE OUT, where source volume control is available, from a LINE OUT used with a destination that has its own volume control.

Next, confirm that the speakers have line-level inputs. Powered (active) speakers contain their own amplifiers and can receive a suitable line-level signal directly. Passive speakers do not; they require a separate power amplifier. A line output should not be connected to speaker binding posts. Choose a cable that matches both devices
Use a stereo cable whose plugs match the amplifier’s output and the speakers’ inputs. Common possibilities include RCA-to-RCA, 1/4-inch TRS-to-RCA, and XLR-to-XLR, but the ports on your particular devices determine the correct choice. Yamaha lists XLR and stereo RCA cable options in its connection instructions; Focusrite describes balanced 1/4-inch TRS line outputs and common unbalanced RCA or 3.5 mm inputs in its speaker connection guide. Check the manuals for connector compatibility and any balanced or unbalanced requirements rather than assuming that plugs that physically fit are interchangeable.

Connect the amplifier to the powered speakers
- Turn off the equipment before connecting if the manufacturers instruct you to do so. Yamaha directs users to power off before making its PRE/LINE OUT connection or changing the output switch.
- Connect the headphone amplifier’s suitable stereo output to the powered speakers’ line-level inputs using the cable selected for their actual ports.
- Set the amplifier and speaker levels low before powering the equipment on, then raise them gradually.
- Choose where speaker volume will be controlled. With a fixed LINE OUT, use the speakers’ level controls or another downstream volume controller. With a documented variable PRE OUT, adjust level at the source. Confirm the behavior in the amplifier’s manual rather than assuming that another manufacturer uses Yamaha’s arrangement.
Can you use the headphone jack instead?
Possibly, but a headphone output is not automatically equivalent to a dedicated preamp output. Its level may be controlled by the headphone volume setting, and the device may change its routing or behavior when headphones are inserted. These details depend on the amplifier; there is no universal rule for headphone amps. Check the exact manual for headphone-jack level control and output routing, and compare those details with any dedicated line or preamp output the manufacturer documents.
