How to Connect a GoDaddy or Namecheap Domain to Your Server

Point a GoDaddy or Namecheap domain to your server safely by identifying authoritative nameservers, choosing delegation or record-level DNS, configuring @ and www, and verifying propagation.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect a GoDaddy or Namecheap domain to a server, first determine which nameservers are authoritative for the domain. Then either delegate DNS to your hosting provider by changing nameservers, or keep the current DNS provider and create records—normally an A record for @ pointing to the server’s IPv4 address and a CNAME or A record for www. Record changes commonly take 30–60 minutes; nameserver changes can take 24–48 hours worldwide.

What actually connects a domain to a server?

A domain registrar and a web server are separate services. GoDaddy or Namecheap may register the domain, while a hosting company, VPS, cloud provider, or another DNS service may host the DNS zone. DNS tells browsers where to connect; your server still must be configured to answer for the domain.

The decisive detail is the domain’s authoritative nameservers. The nameservers assigned to the domain determine which company’s DNS records are used. If the nameservers point to a hosting company, editing records at GoDaddy or Namecheap will not affect public DNS. If they point to the registrar’s DNS service, edit the records in that registrar’s DNS panel.

Choose between nameserver delegation and record-level pointing

There are two valid architectures. Choose one before changing anything, because changing nameservers can replace the active DNS zone and affect email, verification records, redirects, and other subdomains.

Method What you change Who manages DNS afterward Effect on existing records Typical timing Best fit
Delegate DNS to the host Replace the domain’s nameservers with nameservers supplied by the host The hosting provider Existing records may no longer be present in the new zone; recreate required records first Up to 24–48 hours worldwide You want the host to manage the complete DNS zone and it supplies authoritative nameservers
Keep current nameservers Add or edit A, AAAA, CNAME, and other records at the current DNS provider GoDaddy, Namecheap, or the existing DNS service Unrelated records remain in place Often about 30–60 minutes for individual records You need to preserve an existing email, verification, or multi-service DNS setup

When delegation is simpler

Use the host’s nameservers when its setup instructions explicitly require them or when you want its control panel to create and maintain the zone. For Namecheap shared hosting, the documented Web Hosting DNS nameservers are dns1.namecheaphosting.com and dns2.namecheaphosting.com. A different host will provide its own pair; never substitute another provider’s nameservers.

When record-level changes are safer

Keep the current nameservers when mail is already working, several services use subdomains, or the existing DNS provider contains verification and policy records. You can point only the website records while leaving MX, TXT, and unrelated hosts untouched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the server before editing DNS

DNS changes are easier to diagnose when the destination is ready. Collect these details from the hosting provider or server administrator:

  • The public IPv4 address for the website. This is the value used in an A record.
  • An IPv6 address, if the server is deliberately configured for IPv6. This belongs in an AAAA record.
  • The host’s required target for www. It may be the root domain, a provider hostname, or the same server address.
  • Any required nameservers if you chose delegation.
  • The expected domain names for the web server’s virtual host, site definition, or application routing.

Make sure the server accepts traffic on ports 80 and 443 if it will serve ordinary HTTP and HTTPS. Configure the web server or application to recognize both the apex domain, such as example.com, and the hostname you intend to use, such as www.example.com. DNS can deliver a request to the correct IP, but it cannot create a virtual host, install a certificate, open a firewall port, or configure application routing.

Inventory records before a nameserver change

Before delegation, copy the current zone into a safe note or export it if the provider supports exporting. At minimum, record:

  • MX records for mail delivery.
  • TXT records for SPF, DKIM, DMARC, domain verification, and other policies.
  • Existing A, AAAA, and CNAME records for subdomains.
  • Any records used by calendars, support systems, payment services, analytics, or certificate validation.

After delegation, recreate those records in the new authoritative zone. If preserving email is more important than a one-panel setup, keep the current nameservers and change only the web records.

Connect the domain through GoDaddy DNS

These steps apply when the domain’s authoritative DNS is managed in GoDaddy. If the domain uses hosting or third-party nameservers, the GoDaddy editor may show limited or irrelevant records; use the active DNS provider instead.

  1. Sign in to GoDaddy and open Domain Portfolio.
  2. Select the domain, open DNS, and choose Add New Record.
  3. Choose record type A. In the host or name field, enter @ for the root domain. Enter the server’s public IPv4 address as the value.
  4. Choose an appropriate TTL and save the record. TTL controls how long recursive resolvers may cache the answer; it does not force every resolver to refresh immediately.
  5. Inspect the existing www entry. Add or edit it using the destination specified by the host. Use a CNAME when www should resolve to another hostname, such as the root domain or a provider hostname. Use an A record only when the host specifically wants www to resolve directly to an IPv4 address.
  6. Review the complete record list before saving replacements. Do not leave two competing records for the same host unless the DNS design explicitly calls for them.

GoDaddy-specific safety check

Changing an existing A record can move a live website. It can also break a service that relies on that hostname. Confirm the old value, the new value, and the service using the record before replacing it. Do not delete mail-related MX or TXT records merely because the website is moving.

Connect the domain through Namecheap DNS

Use these steps when you are keeping Namecheap DNS. If the domain is delegated elsewhere, edit the records at that authoritative provider instead.

  1. Sign in to Namecheap, open Domain List, and select Manage beside the domain.
  2. Open Advanced DNS. In Host Records, select Add New Record.
  3. Create an A Record with host @ and the server’s public IPv4 address.
  4. For www, add a CNAME Record whose target is the root domain when that matches the host’s instructions, or add an A Record if the host requires a direct address.
  5. Remove conflicting URL redirects, old A records, or old CNAME records for the same host. Newly registered domains can contain parking records that must be removed before the intended destination works.
  6. Save the records and leave unrelated mail and verification records unchanged.

Change Namecheap nameservers instead

If your host supplied nameservers, open the domain’s Nameservers section and choose Custom DNS. Enter every nameserver supplied by the host and save. For Namecheap shared hosting, select Namecheap Web Hosting DNS instead of entering values manually. Do not use Advanced DNS records at Namecheap to override a zone whose authoritative nameservers are already elsewhere.

Use the right DNS record for each destination

Record Purpose Typical example Important constraint
A Maps a hostname to an IPv4 address @ → 203.0.113.10 Use an IPv4 address, not a URL or hostname
AAAA Maps a hostname to an IPv6 address @ → an IPv6 address supplied by the host Add it only when IPv6 routing and the server are correctly configured
CNAME Maps one hostname to another hostname www → the root domain or a provider hostname It points to a name, not an IP address; do not create a CNAME at the zone apex where the provider forbids it
TXT Stores verification and email-policy text SPF, DKIM, DMARC, or ownership verification Preserve required values during a DNS migration
NS Delegates a zone or subdomain to nameservers A registrar’s nameserver assignment Use the registrar’s nameserver controls for the bare domain rather than inventing an apex NS record in the zone

What @ and www mean

@ conventionally represents the zone apex, so an A record for @ serves example.com. The label www serves www.example.com. They are different hostnames and can have different destinations. Creating only the root record does not automatically create a working www record.

Avoid conflicting entries

A hostname should not have an old A record and a new CNAME at the same time. Remove obsolete parking records, URL redirects, and duplicate entries for the host you are changing. Keep intentional records for other subdomains.

Configure the web server after DNS points to it

Once the address resolves to the new machine, configure the server to serve the requested hostnames. In a virtual-host configuration, add both the apex name and www if both should work. Set the application’s canonical redirect deliberately: for example, redirect www to the apex, or the apex to www, but do not create a loop.

Install or renew the TLS certificate after DNS resolves correctly. The certificate must cover every hostname users can reach. If an automated certificate authority is used, its DNS or HTTP challenge must reach the new server. A successful DNS lookup alone does not prove that HTTPS, routing, the application, or the certificate is correct.

Understand propagation and caching

Individual record edits commonly take about 30–60 minutes to appear, and a newly created Namecheap A record is normally effective in about 30 minutes. Nameserver changes can take up to 24–48 hours worldwide. These are operational estimates, not guarantees: recursive resolvers, local caches, browser caches, and the previous record’s TTL can make different networks show different answers during the transition.

Do not repeatedly change the record while waiting. Each change can make diagnosis harder and may introduce a new cached value. Record the time of the change, the old value, the new value, and the selected TTL so you can interpret inconsistent results.

Verify the root domain, www, and the application

  1. Check the authoritative nameservers. If they are not the provider whose editor you changed, move to that provider’s DNS panel.
  2. Query the root hostname and confirm that its A answer is the intended IPv4 address. If you published an AAAA record, verify the IPv6 answer as well.
  3. Query www separately. Confirm that its CNAME target or A address is intentional.
  4. Repeat the checks from more than one network after the expected interval, such as a mobile connection and a separate broadband connection.
  5. Open both HTTP and HTTPS URLs. Confirm that the correct site responds, the certificate matches the hostname, redirects are intentional, and the application can reach its database and other dependencies.

Useful lookup commands

On macOS or Linux, query the records with:

dig example.com A
dig example.com AAAA
dig www.example.com CNAME
dig NS example.com

On Windows, use:

nslookup -type=A example.com
nslookup -type=AAAA example.com
nslookup -type=CNAME www.example.com
nslookup -type=NS example.com

Replace example.com with your domain. These commands show what a resolver returns from the network where you run them; they do not bypass caching everywhere.

Troubleshoot a domain that still does not work

Symptom Likely cause Action
The DNS editor does not contain the records you expect The domain uses third-party or hosting nameservers Query the NS records and edit the authoritative provider’s zone
The root works but www fails No www record, a conflicting record, or an incorrect CNAME target Create the host-required CNAME or A record and remove conflicts
Some networks show the old server Resolver or browser caching during propagation Wait through the relevant TTL and the published propagation window; compare several networks
The domain resolves but shows a parking page An old parking record or redirect remains Remove the parking A, CNAME, or URL redirect for that hostname
The website resolves but HTTPS fails The certificate does not cover the hostname, or the server is not configured for TLS Configure the web server for the domain and issue a certificate covering every public hostname
Mail stopped after nameserver delegation MX, SPF, DKIM, or DMARC records were not recreated Restore the recorded mail and policy entries in the new authoritative zone
The address resolves but the wrong site appears The server’s virtual-host or application routing does not recognize the hostname Add the apex and/or www hostname to the correct site configuration
DNS shows the right IP but the browser times out Firewall, security group, service listener, or port configuration problem Check that the server is listening and that ports 80 and 443 are reachable

Preview the new server before public propagation

A hosts-file entry can direct only your own computer to the new server before public DNS changes. It is useful for testing an application, migration, or certificate setup, but it does not change the public DNS zone. Visitors and other devices continue using the previous destination until the real DNS change propagates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a hosts-file test only with a temporary entry mapping the domain to the new server’s IP. Remove the entry after testing; otherwise your computer can continue bypassing the public DNS result and make later troubleshooting misleading.

Safely migrate an existing website

  1. Lower the DNS TTL ahead of the planned change if your current provider permits it, allowing caches to expire sooner. This does not eliminate propagation.
  2. Build and test the site on the new server using a temporary hostname or hosts-file entry.
  3. Copy the current DNS records, especially mail and verification records, if changing nameservers.
  4. Confirm the new server’s firewall, virtual host, database connection, backups, and HTTPS configuration.
  5. Change only the required A, AAAA, or CNAME records when preserving the current DNS provider. If delegating, recreate the complete required zone before changing nameservers.
  6. Monitor both the old and new servers during the 24–48-hour nameserver window. Keep the old service available until traffic has moved.
  7. After all expected resolvers return the new destination, raise the TTL again if your operating practice calls for longer caching.

Rollback plan

Keep a written copy of the previous record values and nameservers. If the new server fails, restore the previous values at the authoritative provider. Rollback is also subject to resolver caching, so it may not be instantaneous for every visitor.

Final connection checklist

  • You identified the authoritative nameservers.
  • The server’s IPv4 address is correct and stable.
  • The root @ record points to the intended destination.
  • www has the host-required CNAME or A record.
  • No parking, redirect, duplicate, or conflicting record remains for the same hostname.
  • Existing MX, TXT, and other service records were preserved or recreated.
  • The server recognizes the domain and allows web traffic.
  • HTTP, HTTPS, certificates, redirects, and application routing have been tested.
  • You allowed approximately 30–60 minutes for ordinary record edits and up to 24–48 hours for nameserver changes before declaring propagation complete.
