Android supports game controllers over a compatible wired connection or Bluetooth. After pairing, however, a controller is normally exposed as gamepad or joystick input—not as a mouse. To check for pointer support, put the controller into any documented mouse, pointer, or alternate HID mode, then move its specified control outside a game. A moving Android pointer is useful evidence that the mode is active, but it does not guarantee that every app or game will accept it.
What you need before connecting
Check four things before changing Android settings:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The controller’s connection options. It may support Bluetooth, a wired USB connection, or both. Read the controller manual for its pairing button or alternate input modes.
- Your phone or tablet’s port. A wired controller must use a cable and plug that are compatible with both devices. USB-C on the phone does not automatically mean every USB accessory will work.
- Power. Charge a wireless controller before pairing. Some wired controllers draw power from the Android device, while others need their own battery or power switch.
- The target app or game. Android can recognize an input device even when a particular game ignores it or supports only selected buttons and axes.
A USB-C OTG adapter can help when the controller’s plug does not match the phone’s port or when the phone requires an adapter to act as the USB host. Android’s general controller guidance does not require an OTG adapter for every wired setup, so verify the exact phone, controller, cable, and adapter combination before buying one.

- Put the controller into pairing mode. Use the button combination or dedicated pairing switch specified in its manual. A normal power-on state is not always the same as Bluetooth discovery mode.
- Open Android Settings. Go to Connected devices > Pair new device.
- Wait for the controller’s name to appear. Select it in the list of available Bluetooth devices. If Android displays a pairing confirmation or code, approve it as instructed.
- Confirm the connection. The controller should appear as a paired or connected device. Open a game that supports controllers and test several buttons and both sticks.
Google Android Help describes the Connected devices path, but labels can differ by Android release and device maker. If you do not see exactly “Pair new device,” look under a similarly named Connected devices, Bluetooth, or Game controllers section. The essential actions are enabling Bluetooth, entering the controller’s pairing mode, and selecting it from Android’s available-device list.

If the controller does not appear
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again, then repeat pairing mode. A controller that is already connected to another phone, console, or computer may not advertise itself to your Android device.
- Move the controller close to the phone while pairing and temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth hosts.
- Remove an old entry for the controller from Android’s saved devices, restart the controller, and pair again.
- Check the manual for separate Android, Windows, or console modes. Selecting the wrong mode can make the device invisible or expose unexpected controls.
- Install any firmware update offered by the controller manufacturer only when the manual confirms that the update supports your model and connection method.
After Bluetooth pairing
Android may let you change button or joystick assignments in its controller settings. The exact screen varies by device and Android version, so look for an option under the connected controller or a Game controllers menu. Remapping there changes how Android presents the input; it does not add mouse capability to a controller that has no mouse or pointer mode.
Connect a controller with a cable
- Choose a compatible cable. Match the controller connector to the phone or tablet connector. A charging-only cable may not carry data, and a cable with the wrong plug cannot establish a USB input connection.
- Attach an adapter only if the ports require it. For example, a phone with USB-C and a controller with a different USB plug may need a suitable USB-C OTG adapter. Confirm that the phone supports the required USB host arrangement.
- Turn on the controller if its manual requires it. Some wired models activate as soon as they receive power; others have a separate power switch or mode button.
- Connect the cable and wait a few seconds. Open a controller-compatible game and test input. Android should treat a supported device as an input source without Bluetooth pairing.
A wired connection is not automatically more compatible than Bluetooth. It removes radio pairing as a possible failure, but the phone, cable, adapter, controller firmware, and app still have to agree on USB data and input behavior.
Wired connection troubleshooting
- No lights or response: try a known data-capable cable, check both connectors for debris or damage, and verify that the controller is charged if it has a battery.
- The phone reports an unsupported accessory: check whether the adapter is an OTG/host adapter rather than a passive connector. Confirm phone-specific USB host support.
- The controller works briefly and disconnects: the phone may not be supplying enough power, the cable may be loose, or the controller may require external power.
- Android sees the device but the game does not: test another controller-enabled game or app. Recognition by Android does not force every title to implement controller support.
Gamepad input and mouse input are different
“Connected” describes a connection, not the role Android assigns to the device. Android uses separate input-source classifications:

| Android source | What it represents | Typical behavior |
|---|---|---|
SOURCE_GAMEPAD |
Gamepad controls such as face buttons, triggers, and a directional pad | Games read button presses and gamepad axes |
SOURCE_JOYSTICK |
Joystick-style analog controls | Games read one or more analog axes, often from sticks |
SOURCE_MOUSE |
Mouse-like pointing input | Android can process pointer movement and mouse-button events |
A single physical product can expose more than one source, depending on its selected mode. A controller in ordinary gamepad mode can therefore work perfectly in a game while providing no system pointer. Conversely, a controller’s alternate HID mode may expose pointer events but lose normal gamepad mappings.
Android also notes that touchpads and other indirect pointing devices can provide mouse-source information. The operating system’s classification is based on the events the device reports; it is not a promise that a controller manufacturer implemented a mouse mode or that an app will consume those events.
How to check whether your controller supports mouse input
1. Read the controller documentation
Search the manual for terms such as mouse mode, pointer mode, cursor, touchpad, HID, or alternate mode. Look for a specific button combination or switch position. Do not infer support from the presence of an analog stick: an ordinary stick reports joystick axes and does not become a mouse merely because Android can read it.

- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.

- Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.
2. Switch modes exactly as documented
Disconnect the controller, if the manual requires that, select the alternate mode, and reconnect it by Bluetooth or cable. Some devices advertise a different Bluetooth name in each mode; others keep the same name but change their input sources. If the manual does not document a pointer mode, assume that the controller offers gamepad or joystick input only.

Move the control identified by the manual while viewing an Android screen that can show a pointer, such as a launcher or another interface that accepts indirect pointing. If an on-screen cursor moves, Android is receiving pointer-like events in that mode. Test a mouse button or the documented click control as well.
This is a practical check, not a universal compatibility certificate. A launcher may display a cursor while a game ignores mouse events, requires a separate setting, or accepts only touch and gamepad sources. Test the specific app in which you intend to use the controller.

4. Recheck normal gamepad behavior
Switch back to the standard gamepad mode and test buttons, triggers, and sticks in a controller-enabled game. If gamepad input disappears after enabling pointer mode, that may be an intentional mode change rather than a fault. Use the mode that matches the application.

Android’s input APIs let software inspect the sources reported by an input device. A developer can enumerate connected input devices and test whether the device’s source bit field includes InputDevice.SOURCE_GAMEPAD. The same inspection can check for InputDevice.SOURCE_JOYSTICK or InputDevice.SOURCE_MOUSE when the app needs to distinguish those roles.
val device = InputDevice.getDevice(deviceId)
val sources = device.sources
val isGamepad = (sources and InputDevice.SOURCE_GAMEPAD) == InputDevice.SOURCE_GAMEPAD
val isMouse = (sources and InputDevice.SOURCE_MOUSE) == InputDevice.SOURCE_MOUSE
The constants identify the source Android reports; they do not measure quality, latency, or how completely a game supports that source. Android documentation also warns that key and axis identifiers can be reused across different input types, so an app should consider the source before interpreting an event as a particular gamepad control.

For mouse classification, Android’s platform guidance describes a device that supplies relative X/Y movement and a mouse button. That is an operating-system rule for classifying input events. It should not be read as evidence that every game controller can generate those events.
When a pointer appears but the app still does nothing
The app accepts only gamepad input
Some games listen for SOURCE_GAMEPAD or joystick axes and ignore SOURCE_MOUSE. Use the controller’s standard gamepad mode, or use a game-supported control scheme instead of pointer mode.
The app accepts mouse input only in a setting
Look in the app’s controls, accessibility, or input settings for a mouse, keyboard, or external-device option. Settings are app-specific; Android’s successful device connection does not enable a hidden option automatically.

The app expects touch input
A mouse pointer can move over the Android interface while a game continues to require taps, swipes, or on-screen virtual controls. Unless the developer mapped mouse buttons and movement, pointer activity may have no in-game effect.
The mode changed the reported controls
Alternate HID modes often trade one input profile for another. If the pointer works but buttons no longer match, disconnect, return to standard gamepad mode, and use Android or in-game remapping where available.
Common mistakes and safer fixes
- Assuming Bluetooth pairing proves mouse support: pairing proves only that Android established a Bluetooth link. Check the reported behavior and the controller manual.
- Buying an OTG adapter immediately: first identify both ports and confirm whether the phone needs USB host operation. An adapter cannot add a missing mouse mode.
- Testing only one game: use the Android interface and at least one known controller-compatible app to separate device recognition from app support.
- Using an undocumented button combination: random mode combinations can clear pairing or select a console-specific profile. Follow the model’s manual.
- Treating an analog stick as a mouse: joystick axes and relative mouse movement are different Android input sources, even when both involve moving a control.
- Ignoring remapping: if Android or the game offers button and joystick assignments, verify the mapping after changing modes or reconnecting.
A repeatable decision checklist
- Identify whether you will use Bluetooth or a wired connection.
- Confirm the phone port, controller port, cable, and any required adapter.
- For Bluetooth, enter pairing mode and use Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, or the equivalent labels on your Android version.
- For wired use, connect a compatible data cable and an OTG/host adapter only when the hardware requires it.
- Verify standard gamepad operation in a controller-enabled app.
- Read the manual for a documented mouse, pointer, touchpad, or alternate HID mode.
- Switch modes as directed and test pointer movement outside a game.
- Test the target app separately, because app support can differ from Android’s device classification.
- If behavior is wrong, reset the mode, remove stale Bluetooth pairing, try a known data cable, and check the app’s own input settings.
What the connection result really tells you
A successful Bluetooth or wired connection establishes communication between Android and the controller. Standard mode generally supplies gamepad or joystick events. Mouse capability requires the controller to expose mouse-like events—usually through a documented alternate mode—and requires the app to accept those events. Treat each stage separately: physical connection, Android source classification, and application support. That separation makes it possible to identify whether a failure comes from pairing, cabling, controller mode, Android mapping, or the app itself.
