For an older player, use composite or component cables only if the TV has the corresponding input. Then select the TV input used. Port availability and menu names vary by model, so check the labels, the on-TV Connection Guide, or the exact TV manual before buying cables or a converter.
Check the ports on both devices first
Turn off the TV and DVD player, then inspect their rear or side panels. On the player, look for HDMI OUT, composite AV OUT, or component video OUT. On the TV, look for the matching IN ports. The labels matter more than connector color alone. If your Samsung TV uses a One Connect Box, make the connection to the relevant ports on that box.

Samsung’s DVD connection guide covers HDMI, composite AV, component video, and DVI-to-HDMI. It is legacy, model-specific guidance—not a guarantee that every Samsung Smart TV has these inputs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConnect by HDMI when both devices have it
- Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the DVD player’s HDMI OUT port.
- Plug the other end into an available HDMI IN port on the TV.
- Turn on both devices. If the picture does not appear, open the TV’s source or connected-devices menu and choose the HDMI input you used.
Samsung’s device connection guidance and source-switching instructions follow this same principle. Depending on the TV model, software, and region, the menu may be called Connected Devices, Source, or something similar. A DVD played from a standard DVD player remains standard-definition content unless the player upscales it; an HDMI connection does not make the disc native 4K.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect a player with red, white, and yellow cables
These are composite AV cables: yellow carries video, while red and white carry right- and left-channel audio.
- Connect the yellow video lead from the player’s AV OUT to the TV’s compatible composite video input.
- Connect the red and white audio leads to the matching audio inputs.
- Select the TV’s AV source.
Some older Samsung TVs share the composite video input with the green Y component jack. Samsung’s instructions for a selected older model identify the shared jack with a yellow ring; check your TV’s labels and manual rather than assuming every green jack accepts composite video. See Samsung’s composite connection instructions.

If the TV has no compatible AV input
If the DVD player outputs composite video but the TV has only HDMI inputs, you may need an active composite AV-to-HDMI converter. Confirm that its input is composite/RCA and its output is HDMI; a converter that works in the opposite direction will not solve the mismatch. Check its power requirements and supported video format. Samsung’s cited guidance does not test or endorse a particular converter.

Connect component video
Component video uses three leads for video—green Y, blue Pb, and red Pr—with separate red and white leads for audio. It is not the same as composite, which uses one yellow video lead.

- Connect green Y, blue Pb, and red Pr from the player’s component OUT to the TV’s component IN.
- Connect the separate red and white audio leads to the TV’s audio inputs.
- Select the Component source on the TV.
Keep the red Pr video lead in the component video jack; do not confuse it with the red R audio jack. Samsung’s component wiring instructions describe this setup for a selected older model. If the player has component output but the TV lacks component input, Samsung’s general device guidance says an adapter may be needed; check the exact TV model to determine compatibility.
Choose the route that matches your ports
| Connection | Required ports | Cables and setup note |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | HDMI OUT on the player and HDMI IN on the TV | One HDMI cable; select the HDMI input used. |
| Composite AV | Composite AV OUT and compatible AV IN | Yellow video plus red/white audio; some older Samsung TVs share the video input with a yellow-ringed green Y jack. |
| Component | Component OUT and component IN | Green/blue/red video plus red/white audio; keep red Pr video separate from red R audio. |
| Converter | Matching player output and a converter whose output matches a TV input | Use the source-side cable, converter, and TV-side cable; check conversion direction, power, and supported format. |

- Reseat the cable at both ends. For HDMI, try another HDMI input or a known-working cable.
- For component video, confirm green Y, blue Pb, and red Pr are connected to the component video jacks—not to similarly colored audio jacks.
- If the TV model offers a picture test or HDMI diagnostic, try it. Available tests vary by model and software.
- Check both manuals for port compatibility and supported signal formats.
Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the selected source, cable connections, and component wiring when picture or color is wrong.
