For a gaming PC or PS5, USB is the simplest documented way to connect a compatible controller: use a cable that fits the controller and device, and supports data. For wireless play, both the controller and the target device must support the same connection method. Xbox controllers can connect to a Windows PC by USB, Bluetooth, or Xbox Wireless; Xbox-console pairing steps depend on the console and controller, so use Xbox’s current model-specific instructions.
Choose a connection method
Start by checking the controller’s ports and wireless capabilities, then check what the PC or console supports. A cable that fits physically is not enough if it only charges and does not carry data. For wireless, confirm that both ends support the same protocol. Finally, distinguish connecting the controller to a device from getting a particular game to recognize it.

- USB: A straightforward wired option for many controllers and Windows PCs. For a DualSense’s first PS5 pairing, a USB cable is part of the documented setup.
- Bluetooth: An option only when the controller and target device both support Bluetooth. The controller must also be placed in its model-specific pairing mode.
- Xbox Wireless: An additional way to connect compatible Xbox controllers to a Windows PC. Verify that the controller and PC or adapter support it.
Connect a controller to a Windows gaming PC
Use USB
- Choose a cable with an end that fits the controller and one that fits a USB port on the PC. Use a data-capable cable, not a charging-only cable.
- Connect the controller to the PC. Microsoft says most Xbox and PlayStation controllers, along with many third-party controllers, support USB connections on Windows. See Microsoft’s Windows controller connection guidance.
- Open the game and check its controller settings if input does not work. A successful device connection does not guarantee that every game supports the controller or all its features.
Use Bluetooth
- Confirm that the controller model supports Bluetooth and that the PC has Bluetooth capability.
- Turn on Bluetooth in Windows and put the controller into its model-specific pairing mode. The precise button combination depends on the controller, so consult its instructions rather than assuming one universal sequence.
- Open Windows Bluetooth device settings, select the controller when it appears, and complete pairing.
- Check the game’s controller settings if the controller pairs but the game does not respond as expected. PlayStation notes that DualSense game support and features can vary by game.
Microsoft lists USB, Bluetooth, and Xbox Wireless as connection options for Xbox controllers on PC. Its guidance makes wireless support dependent on the controller and computer hardware; see Microsoft’s Xbox controller-to-PC guide. For DualSense, PlayStation documents USB Type-C and Bluetooth connections to supported PCs, while warning that game support can differ: PlayStation’s DualSense device guidance.
Use Xbox Wireless
If you want to connect an Xbox controller to a PC over Xbox Wireless, check compatibility between the controller and the PC’s built-in wireless capability or a compatible adapter before buying anything. Microsoft lists Xbox Wireless as a PC connection method; the Microsoft guide is the relevant starting point. A compatible Xbox Wireless Controller product page lists Windows PC compatibility and USB-C cable and Bluetooth options for that product; do not assume every controller or adapter combination is interchangeable.

Pair a DualSense controller with a PS5
Pair the controller for the first time
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the console with a USB cable.
- If the controller is off, press the PS button. The light bar blinks during pairing; when the player indicator lights, pairing is complete.
- Disconnect the cable for wireless play once the controller has enough charge.
Use a cable that supports data as well as fitting the controller and console. PlayStation’s steps are in its controller support guidance.
Add a second controller over Bluetooth
- Using a controller already paired to the PS5, open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- On the second DualSense, hold the Create and PS buttons until the controller appears on screen.
- Select the controller from the Bluetooth Accessories list.
PlayStation says a DualSense can be paired with one PS5 console at a time. If the controller was paired with another PS5, pair it with the console you want to use through the steps above.

Connect a controller to an Xbox console
The documented Xbox connection guidance here covers connecting Xbox controllers to Windows PCs, not a complete Xbox-console pairing procedure. Because console steps can depend on the controller and console model, follow the current Xbox support instructions for your specific hardware rather than applying PC Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless steps to the console.

If the controller connects but does not work in a game
- Check whether the device sees it: If Windows or the console does not show a successful connection, revisit the cable, Bluetooth support, or pairing process.
- Check the individual game: Game compatibility is separate from device pairing. A game may support only certain controller types or a subset of a controller’s features.
- Recheck the cable: Confirm that the connectors fit both devices and that the cable carries data, not just power.
- Recheck wireless support: Make sure the controller model and target device support the same wireless method; Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless are distinct options.
