To open a Cisco router’s command-line interface locally, connect the computer to the router’s labeled Console port with the cable that matches that port, then open a terminal emulator on the correct serial interface. Start with 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control. Cisco uses different console connectors across router families, so check the hardware guide for your exact model before choosing a cable.
Identify the router’s console port and cable
Look for a port labeled Console and verify its connector in the router’s hardware guide. Do not mistake an Ethernet network port for the console port: console access is a local management connection used for command-line configuration and troubleshooting, not an ordinary network connection. Cisco documents both RJ-45 serial and USB console implementations, and the required cable depends on the router model.

| Router console port | Typical connection path | Model-specific example |
|---|---|---|
| RJ-45 serial | RJ-45-to-DB-9 serial console cable to a computer’s DB-9 serial port. If the computer lacks DB-9, use a USB-to-serial adapter. | Cisco 800 Series guide |
| USB console | USB cable with the connector specified for the router and the appropriate computer-side USB connector. | Cisco 1900 Series guide describes USB Type-A to 5-pin mini-USB Type-B. |
| USB console | USB cable with the connector specified for the router and the appropriate computer-side USB connector. | Cisco 8500 Series guide describes USB Type-A to 5-pin micro-USB Type-B. |
These are examples, not a universal Cisco cable standard. Confirm the router-end connector and the computer-end connection before connecting or buying a cable. Some USB console and operating-system combinations may also require a driver; use the model’s guide for the applicable instructions.
Connect the router and open a terminal session
- Check the router model and port. Find the label and confirm the console connector type in the model’s hardware guide.
- Connect the matching cable. For RJ-45 serial, connect the cable’s RJ-45 end to the router and its DB-9 end to the computer’s serial port. If the computer has no DB-9 port, connect through a USB-to-serial adapter. For USB console, use the cable specified for that router.
- Identify the serial interface. If using a USB-to-serial adapter, find the COM port assigned by the computer and select that port in the terminal software. For direct USB console, select the interface associated with the router’s USB console connection.
- Set the terminal parameters. Choose 9600 bits per second, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control as the starting profile.
- Start or refresh the session. Look for router boot output or a command prompt. If the session was opened before connecting, refresh or reopen it after the cable is attached.
Cisco describes the starting serial profile in its terminal-emulator troubleshooting guidance; the cited hardware guides also document 9600 8N1 defaults for their router examples. The model’s own guide takes precedence if its console settings differ.

Troubleshoot a blank, garbled, or nonresponsive console
No output appears
- Confirm that the terminal software is using the correct COM port or USB serial interface.
- Check that the cable is attached to the port labeled Console at the router and that the cable matches the model’s console connector.
- Verify the serial settings, beginning with 9600, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control.
Characters are garbled
A mismatch between the terminal’s serial parameters and the router’s console settings can produce unintelligible characters. Confirm the model-specific settings and check the baud rate first. Cisco notes that some routers may have had the console speed changed in the configuration register; 1200, 2400, and 4800 are other speeds listed in its guidance. On some platforms, including 3600 Series routers, 19200, 38400, 57600, and 115200 are supported. These are platform-dependent alternatives, not universal defaults.
Output appears, but keystrokes do not work
Check for a baud-rate mismatch or a faulty console cable, and make sure Scroll Lock is off. Cisco identifies these as possible causes when the session displays output but does not accept input. Also recheck that the selected serial port is the one connected to the router.
