To connect a Bluetooth gaming controller to a PC, turn on Bluetooth in Windows, add the controller from Settings, and put the controller into pairing mode using the instructions for its exact model. Pairing it with Windows is separate from getting a particular game to recognize it.
Pair a Bluetooth controller with Windows
- Check that the PC has Bluetooth and turn it on. If Bluetooth is missing, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter is one option. If your controller supports it, a USB cable may let you connect without Bluetooth.
- Open the Bluetooth device controls. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth. In Windows 10, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, then choose the option to add a Bluetooth device. Microsoft’s Bluetooth pairing guide covers these Windows steps. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
- Put the controller in pairing mode. The button sequence depends on the model, so use its manual. For a Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller, Microsoft says to hold the Pair button until the Xbox icon flashes.
- Select the controller in the Windows device list. Follow any on-screen prompt to finish pairing.
- Open your game and check its controller settings. Windows pairing does not guarantee that the game supports the controller or all of its features.
If the controller is still connected to a console, phone, or another host, disconnect or unpair it there before pairing it with the PC. When Bluetooth is enabled, Windows says paired devices can connect automatically when in range.

Check model-specific pairing and feature support
Xbox Wireless Controller
Use the Pair button until the Xbox icon flashes, then select the controller in Windows’ Bluetooth device list. This applies to Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller models; do not assume every older Xbox controller supports Bluetooth. Microsoft’s indexed Xbox controller connection guide describes pairing through Windows Bluetooth settings.

PlayStation DualSense
Sony supports DualSense Bluetooth use on Windows 10 (64-bit) and lists later supported platforms. Functionality varies by game. Haptic feedback is available only in supported games and may require USB on Windows; the headset jack requires a USB connection on Windows or Mac. Sony’s DualSense connection guide also explains USB Type-C connection and the PC firmware update utility. For Steam games, Sony points to the Steam store’s Controller Support entry, which marks support as Full or Partial.

Nintendo Switch Pro and other controllers
Microsoft’s indexed Windows guidance names the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller among controllers that may be used with Windows, but setup and game support are not established as universal across models. Check the exact controller manual and the game’s support information. Do not assume the Switch Pro, Switch 2, third-party controllers, or every launcher behave identically.
Bluetooth or USB: choose the connection that fits
| Connection | What you need | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | A PC with Bluetooth, or a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter | That the exact controller model supports Bluetooth and its features work wirelessly with your game |
| USB | A suitable cable and a controller that supports wired data connection | That the cable supports data, not just charging, and that the functions you need work over USB |
USB can be a practical alternative if Bluetooth is unavailable or troublesome, but wired and wireless feature support may differ for a given controller.

Troubleshoot a controller that will not connect or respond
- The controller is not listed in Windows: Confirm Bluetooth is present and on, then check that the controller is charged, powered on, and in its model-specific discovery mode.
- It may still be paired to another device: Disconnect or unpair it from the console, phone, or other host that may be using it, then try Windows pairing again.
- Windows still cannot find it: Check Windows device discovery settings and follow Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide. Discovery settings or troubleshooting steps may help, but they are not a guaranteed fix.
- Windows says it is connected, but the game does not respond: Open that game’s controller options and check its documented controller support. Sony notes that DualSense support varies by game; some PlayStation games may require Steam Input or DS4Windows, according to Microsoft’s indexed controller guidance.
- You need to distinguish a Bluetooth issue from game support: Try a supported USB data cable. If wired play works, that can help isolate the issue, though it does not prove every wireless feature should work the same way.
