To connect a Bluetooth controller to a Windows PC, turn on the PC’s Bluetooth, put the controller into its model-specific pairing mode, then select it from Windows’ Bluetooth device list. After pairing, check that your game recognizes it: a successful Bluetooth connection does not guarantee that every game or controller feature will work.
Before you pair: check Bluetooth and the controller
- Make sure the PC has working Bluetooth hardware and Bluetooth is turned on in Windows. If the PC has no working Bluetooth, you will need a suitable Bluetooth adapter for a Bluetooth connection; a compatible USB cable may be an alternative if the controller and game support wired use.
- Find the pairing instructions for your exact controller model. The button sequence varies, and a controller must be discoverable before Windows can find it.
- Charge the controller and keep it near the PC while pairing.
Microsoft’s Windows Bluetooth pairing instructions describe selecting a device from Windows settings. Once paired, a device may reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is on and both devices are in range.

Pair the controller in Windows
- Open Windows Settings and turn on Bluetooth. The exact Settings path and labels can vary by Windows version.
- Put the controller into pairing or discoverable mode using the instructions for its make and model.
- In Windows Bluetooth settings, choose Add device, select Bluetooth, and wait for the controller to appear. Select it to complete pairing.
- Open the game you want to play and test the controls. If it does not respond, check that game’s controller-support information and the controller’s feature compatibility.

Example: pairing a PlayStation DualSense
These steps apply to the DualSense, not to every controller. PlayStation’s PC gaming support instructions say to make sure the player indicator is off and disconnect any USB cable. Then hold the Create and PS buttons until the light bar blinks. Turn on Bluetooth on the PC and choose the controller from Windows’ Bluetooth device list.

A DualSense can be paired with one device at a time. To use it with a different device, pair it with that device. For other controller models, use the manufacturer’s pairing instructions rather than assuming the DualSense button sequence applies.
Pairing is not the same as game support
Bluetooth pairing establishes a connection between Windows and the controller; it does not ensure every game supports that controller or all of its features. PlayStation says DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 support on PC varies by game. For Steam games, check the game’s Controller Support listing, which identifies support as Full or Partial.

DualSense connection and feature limits
PlayStation lists DualSense Bluetooth and USB support for Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11, while noting that some features may not be available on every device. Haptic feedback on PC may require a USB connection and a game that supports it; the headset jack requires a wired PC connection.
DUALSHOCK 4 is a different case
PlayStation documents DUALSHOCK 4 PC connection through a DUALSHOCK 4 USB wireless adaptor or a compatible micro USB cable. Do not assume that this is the same wireless setup as pairing a DualSense over Bluetooth.

If Windows cannot find or connect to the controller
- Check Bluetooth and pairing mode. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the PC and the controller is in its own discoverable mode. Retry the model-specific button sequence if needed.
- Reduce distance and check charge. Move the controller closer to the PC and make sure its battery is not low.
- Clear an old pairing and retry. If the controller was paired before, remove its saved Bluetooth entry in Windows and try discovery again. A stale or incorrect device configuration can interfere with connection.
- Use Windows troubleshooting. Follow the Bluetooth troubleshooter or Get Help flow for your Windows version, then use Microsoft’s linked troubleshooting guidance if the basic checks do not resolve it.
- Investigate the PC’s Bluetooth setup. If Bluetooth is missing or connection still fails, check the computer’s Bluetooth hardware, driver, service, configuration, and update state. Microsoft identifies these as possible sources of Bluetooth problems.
When to use USB instead
A compatible cable can be useful when the controller supports wired play, Bluetooth is unavailable or unreliable, or a feature requires USB. Confirm that both the controller and the particular game support the wired connection and any feature you want to use. For a DualSense, PlayStation specifies USB for PC haptic feedback in supported games and for the headset jack.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after that date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That support change is relevant to PC maintenance, but it is not itself a Bluetooth pairing requirement.
