To keep a YouTube Live stream running from Wowza, use ServerListenerStreamDemoPublisher to repeat one video file, or configure Stream Publisher with an application-specific SMIL schedule to loop multiple items. Then send Wowza’s output to the YouTube stream URL and stream key, validate the encoder settings, and monitor YouTube’s stream health before leaving it unattended.

One video file: server listener
Wowza documents ServerListenerStreamDemoPublisher as a way to publish a VOD file as a live stream and repeat it until the listener is terminated. It is the concise choice for a single clip, not a full playlist manager. The setup is available through Engine Manager or by editing Server.xml. Multiple items: Stream Publisher
For a schedule of clips, use Stream Publisher in the relevant Engine application. Its schedule is an application-specific SMIL file in that application’s Stream Storage directory; the streamPublisherSmilFile property identifies the file. Each application loading a schedule needs its own SMIL file. Wowza warns that scheduler SMIL contains extra tags that Manager’s SMIL editor may not recognize, so create or edit the file in a text editor. Follow Wowza’s Stream Publisher scheduling guide.

Configure the playlist behavior
Set the schedule parameters according to the source and playback you intend. These are Stream Publisher semantics; confirm them against the documentation for your installed Engine version.

- For a live source, use
start="-2". For an on-demand source, usestart="0"or a positive offset. - Set
length="-1"to play to the end, or use a positive length in seconds to cap playback. - Set
repeat="true"to loop through the schedule. Withrepeat="false", the stream shuts down after that playlist ends. - The
scheduledattribute sets a playlist’s start time. If a begin time is already past, playlists load in order and can immediately replace the preceding playlist.
Wowza’s examples include historical dates; do not reuse those as current schedule times. Use dates and times appropriate to your intended broadcast.
Connect Wowza to YouTube Live
- Create or select the destination in YouTube Live Control Room. Obtain that stream’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this generic workflow: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Configure Wowza’s outbound publishing destination. Enter the YouTube URL and key in the output or publishing configuration supported by your installed Engine version. The available documentation does not establish one universal Engine Manager click path for every release, so consult the applicable Wowza version documentation for its exact controls.
- Keep the key secret. YouTube treats the stream key like a password and address for the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the Wowza configuration with the replacement. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Prefer RTMPS when your Wowza output supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. The RTMPS URL is available through YouTube’s stream settings. Support and configuration can vary by Engine version, so verify the relevant Wowza documentation instead of assuming every deployment offers the same option. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Set encoder parameters and validate the stream
Match Wowza’s outbound encoding to YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected video codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, says not to exceed four seconds, recommends CBR, and supports AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; select the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance rather than applying a generic number. Ensure upstream capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate.

YouTube transcodes incoming live video into formats viewers can watch. Before relying on a continuous broadcast, test with representative audio and motion and check stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers testing and monitoring.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
- The playlist does not repeat: For Stream Publisher, check that the intended playlist has
repeat="true". If it is false, the stream shuts down when that playlist ends. For a single file, confirm the server listener is configured and has not been terminated. - A scheduled playlist replaces another immediately: Check its
scheduledstart time. A begin time already in the past can cause playlists to load in order and immediately replace the prior one. - The schedule fails to load: Confirm the SMIL file is in the correct application’s Stream Storage directory and that
streamPublisherSmilFileidentifies it. Edit scheduler SMIL in a text editor rather than Manager’s SMIL editor. - YouTube does not receive the stream: Check the destination URL and key in Wowza, and confirm the key belongs to the selected YouTube Live stream. If the key may have been exposed or changed, reset it in Live Control Room and update Wowza.
- YouTube reports stream health or encoding problems: Recheck codec-specific bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s current recommendations. Verify sustainable upstream capacity and test the same type of motion and audio as the planned stream.
- RTMPS is unavailable in Wowza: Confirm whether the installed Engine version and output workflow support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but support should not be assumed across all Engine deployments.
