How to Configure Voting on an Arma 3 Server

A practical Arma 3 server.cfg guide to voteMissionPlayers, voteThreshold, and allowedVoteCmds[], including per-command overrides, disputed disabling methods, version caveats, and troubleshooting when voting does not appear.

Configure Arma 3 voting in server.cfg with voteMissionPlayers, voteThreshold, and (when you need command-level control) allowedVoteCmds[]. The first controls when mission voting starts, the second sets the share of votes required, and the array can give individual commands their own threshold and pre- or post-mission availability. Because defaults and disabling methods vary across builds and community guides, change one setting at a time, restart the server, and verify the result with connected players and the server log.

What Arma 3 voting settings control

Arma 3 exposes voting controls in the server configuration rather than in a separate voting plug-in. The settings apply to the built-in mission and command-voting system:

  • voteMissionPlayers determines how many connected players cause mission voting to start.
  • voteThreshold determines the share of votes needed to confirm a vote when a command does not define its own threshold.
  • allowedVoteCmds[] lists commands that may be voted on, indicates whether each command is available before or after a mission, and can optionally override the global threshold for that command.

Global values are used wherever an entry in allowedVoteCmds[] (or allowedVotedAdminCmds[], where that setting is present in your build) does not provide a per-command threshold. The official community wiki documents the voting system and notes changes beginning with Arma 3 version 1.39 DEV; consult the current page for syntax changes in the build you run: Arma 3: Mission Voting.

Before editing server.cfg

Confirm which configuration your server actually loads

Dedicated-server hosts commonly expose server.cfg through a control-panel editor, a mounted configuration directory, or a file on the machine you administer. Use the file selected by the server’s launch configuration, not an unused template. If your provider offers separate profiles for different instances, select the profile attached to the instance players join.

Make a reversible change

  1. Copy the current server.cfg and give the copy a date or version label.
  2. Edit only the voting lines for the first test. Leave unrelated identity, mission, security, and network settings untouched.
  3. Keep a plain-text record of the old and new values so you can restore the previous behavior if a vote disappears or starts at the wrong time.

Plan a real player test

A configuration can parse successfully while producing an unexpected voting experience. Arrange enough connected clients to meet the value of voteMissionPlayers, test a mission change, and test any command you expose through allowedVoteCmds[]. Record whether the option appears before a mission, after a mission, or in both states.

The global voting keys

Setting What it controls Example in community configurations Important qualification
voteMissionPlayers The number of connected players that starts mission voting. 1 The engine default is not confirmed; another community example uses 0 in a mission-selection context.
voteThreshold The share of votes required to confirm a vote when no command-specific threshold applies. 0.33 (described by hosts as 33%) The engine default is not confirmed. A per-command fallback of 0.5 appears in snippets, but that is not proof of the global default.

voteMissionPlayers: when voting becomes available

Set this to the number of connected players that must be present before the server starts mission voting. A value of 1 is used in published host examples, allowing voting to start with one connected player. That example is a configuration choice, not confirmation that 1 is the engine default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One other guide shows 0 alongside a description related to mission selection. Since the available evidence does not establish how every current build interprets that value, do not use 0 as a universal recommendation. If you test it, verify the behavior with a client connected alone and with a second client connected.

voteThreshold: how much agreement is required

This value represents the share of votes required for a successful vote. Community host examples use 0.33 and describe it as 33 percent of players voting yes. For example, the following line sets the global threshold to that reported value:

voteThreshold = 0.33;

Do not present 0.33 as a confirmed engine default. Another source mentions 0.5 as a fallback when an individual command has no threshold, while the engine’s global default was not established. If the result on your server differs from the percentage you expect, inspect the active configuration and the server log rather than assuming a built-in default.

Using allowedVoteCmds[] for command-level control

allowedVoteCmds[] is an array of entries. Each entry contains a command name, a flag for availability before the mission, a flag for availability after the mission, and an optional threshold. A threshold written in an entry takes precedence over the global voteThreshold for that command.

The wiki snippet and host examples show this shape:

allowedVoteCmds[] = {
    {"admin", true, true, 0.5}
};

The field order above follows the available wiki wording, but the retrieved wording was snippet-level and the exact order should be checked against the current wiki for your build before deploying it. The example means that the command named admin is enabled in both the pre-mission and post-mission states and uses a 0.5 threshold instead of the global value.

Pre-mission and post-mission flags

The two Boolean fields determine when that command can be voted on. Set the first flag to true when the command should be available before a mission starts; set the second to true when it should be available after a mission is running or has ended. A false flag removes that command from the corresponding phase. Test both phases: a command that works after a mission can still be absent while players are at the mission-selection screen.

Per-command thresholds override the global value

Suppose the global value is 0.33, but the admin entry ends with 0.5. Votes for that command use 0.5; other commands without an entry-level threshold continue to use the global setting. This lets you make a consequential command harder to pass without raising the threshold for mission voting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A minimal, testable configuration

The following is the compact shape published by community hosts. It starts mission voting with one connected player, uses a 0.33 global threshold, and gives the admin command a 0.5 threshold in both phases:

voteMissionPlayers = 1;
voteThreshold = 0.33;
allowedVoteCmds[] = {
    {"admin", true, true, 0.5}
};

Use this as a controlled test rather than as a claim about defaults. After saving, restart the server using your normal hosting workflow, connect a client, and verify that mission voting appears at the expected player count. Then test the command before and after a mission and confirm that its stricter threshold is applied.

Build configurations for common goals

Allow mission voting as soon as one player is connected

Use the documented host-example value for the player trigger and choose the global threshold your group accepts:

voteMissionPlayers = 1;
voteThreshold = 0.33;

This does not by itself define which commands can be voted on. Review allowedVoteCmds[] as well, because an absent or restrictive command list can prevent an option from appearing even when the global threshold is low.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Require a stronger consensus for one command

Keep the global threshold for ordinary votes and add a higher entry-level value to the sensitive command:

voteMissionPlayers = 1;
voteThreshold = 0.33;
allowedVoteCmds[] = {
    {"admin", true, true, 0.5}
};

The command-specific value applies only to that entry. Confirm the command name and phase flags against the current wiki before using the pattern in a production server.

Expose voting only in one phase

Change one of the two Boolean fields in the entry to false. For example, this pattern enables the command before a mission but not after it:

allowedVoteCmds[] = {
    {"admin", true, false, 0.5}
};

Because the exact entry order is the part of the syntax with the least certainty in the available documentation, validate the result in both phases and consult the current wiki if the command appears in the opposite phase.

How to disable voting

Community discussions report more than one disabling method, and they do not establish a single version-independent behavior. The most conservative approach is to remove all command entries with an empty array and then test:

allowedVoteCmds[] = {};

Another discussion reports allowedVoteCmds = 0; as disabling all voting. That syntax is different from the empty-array form and should not be substituted without testing on your build. Guides also suggest very large thresholds such as 999, while another table uses 9999. A report says 9999 did not change behavior for one user, so a large threshold is not a reliable universal switch.

If your objective is “no voting,” start with the empty allowedVoteCmds[] array, restart, and verify with an ordinary player account. Check both the pre-mission and post-mission screens. If a vote option remains, restore the backup, inspect the server log for a parsing error, and compare the active configuration with the current wiki’s syntax for your Arma 3 build.

Why the mission-vote option may not appear

Check the player trigger first

If the connected-player count has not reached voteMissionPlayers, mission voting may not start. Test with exactly the number configured and then with one additional client. This distinguishes a trigger problem from a threshold or command-list problem.

Check the global threshold

A threshold is a requirement for confirmation, not a guarantee that the option will be displayed. Confirm that the value in the loaded server.cfg is the one you edited and that the server was restarted after the change. Remember that the engine default is not confirmed, so do not infer the active value from a guide that uses 0.33.

Inspect allowedVoteCmds[]

An entry can hide a command in one phase through its Boolean flags, and an incorrectly formatted entry may be ignored. Verify the command name, both phase flags, and the optional threshold. If the option is present in one phase but absent in the other, the phase flags are the first place to look.

Review missionWhitelist[]

An older forum thread describes a player who saw no mission-vote option even with a 33 percent threshold. The suggested checks included voteThreshold, allowedVoteCmds[], and missionWhitelist[]. That report may not reflect current behavior, but the whitelist is worth checking when the voting keys appear correct and the desired mission is not available.

Look at the server log after every syntax change

A typo, a missing semicolon, or an array that does not match the build’s expected structure can leave the server running with older or fallback behavior. Compare the startup log before and after the edit, and keep the last known-good file so you can roll back immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe validation procedure

  1. Back up the active file. Preserve the exact configuration the server loaded before editing.
  2. Set one global value. Begin with a clearly documented test value such as voteMissionPlayers = 1; or voteThreshold = 0.33;.
  3. Restart the server. Use the host’s normal restart control and wait for a clean startup.
  4. Connect the minimum test clients. Check whether mission voting starts at the configured player count.
  5. Test confirmation. Cast votes from the connected clients and observe whether the result matches the intended threshold.
  6. Add command entries separately. Introduce allowedVoteCmds[] only after the global behavior is understood.
  7. Test both phases. Check each command before and after a mission, because the two flags control visibility independently.
  8. Check logs and restore quickly if needed. If behavior is inconsistent, return to the backup and compare the syntax with the current wiki.

Version and default-value cautions

Voting behavior is build-dependent. The official wiki snippet references changes since Arma 3 1.39 DEV, which means a configuration copied from an older guide may not describe the current engine. The available documentation does not confirm the engine defaults for either voteMissionPlayers or voteThreshold. Treat values shown in host guides as examples, not as immutable defaults.

For a production server, record the Arma 3 build, the exact voting lines, the number of clients used in testing, and the observed result. That small change log makes it possible to identify whether a later update, host template, or profile switch changed voting behavior.

Quick reference

Goal Relevant setting Value or pattern What to verify
Choose how many connected players trigger mission voting voteMissionPlayers 1 is used in host examples Test with the configured count; the default is unresolved.
Set the global approval share voteThreshold 0.33 is described as 33% in host guidance Confirm the loaded file and actual result; the engine default is unresolved.
Give one command a different threshold allowedVoteCmds[] {"admin", true, true, 0.5} Verify command name, field order, phase flags, and override behavior.
Remove all command entries allowedVoteCmds[] {} Community-reported disabling method; test after restart.
Attempt a high-threshold shutdown voteThreshold 999 or 9999 appear in guides Reports conflict, including one where 9999 had no effect; do not rely on it without testing.

Practical recommendation

For most servers, begin with explicit values rather than relying on defaults: define voteMissionPlayers, define voteThreshold, and list only the commands that players should be able to vote on. Add a per-command threshold when one action needs more agreement than ordinary mission voting. If voting must be unavailable, use the empty allowedVoteCmds[] form as a tested starting point instead of assuming that a very large threshold disables the system. Recheck the current wiki and your startup log whenever the Arma 3 build or hosting template changes.
