Start with Roblox’s own graphics setting, then update Sober. If performance or stability is still poor, check whether your installed Sober version offers renderer or graphics optimization controls and test them one at a time. There is no universally best renderer or guaranteed FPS gain: results depend on the experience, GPU, driver and Sober release.
What to try first
- Update Sober. Check for updates to the installed Flathub package before spending time tuning settings. On October 5, 2026, Flathub showed Sober version 1.8.0 and a listing updated three days earlier. Its release notes cited fixes for long-standing performance issues and freezes, a rendering bug on certain GPUs, and some Vulkan crashes. Those fixes may not change performance on every system. Check the Flathub Sober listing for the version and release information currently available.
- Lower Roblox’s graphics quality. In an experience, open the menu using the Roblox logo or Esc, choose Settings, set Graphics Mode to Manual, then move the Graphics Quality slider left. Roblox says lower quality can improve performance; moving it right favors visual detail. Roblox’s Graphics Quality instructions cover this control. Raise the slider again if the visual trade-off is not worthwhile.
- Only then review Sober’s graphics settings. Use the Settings interface available in your installed Sober version. Community guides mention renderer and graphics optimization controls, but the options may differ or be absent in some releases. Their names and what they do are outlined below.
Which Sober graphics settings should you check?
Renderer: Vulkan or OpenGL
Community setup notes identify a use_opengl option that selects OpenGL rather than Vulkan. If Vulkan crashes, causes rendering trouble or prevents launch, trying OpenGL is a reasonable troubleshooting fallback. It is not a general speed recommendation: one renderer may work better or more reliably than the other depending on your GPU, driver and game. Sober’s release notes have also listed fixes for some Vulkan crashes and GPU-specific rendering bugs.

Confirm that your installed version exposes this option before looking for it. The community guides are not official Sober documentation, and a setting documented by a guide may have changed or may not appear in your version. A community Linux setup README and a community Sober README discuss these controls.
Graphics optimization mode
Community notes also mention graphics_optimization_mode, with performance, balanced and quality choices. If your Sober Settings interface offers it, compare the modes rather than assuming one is best. A performance-oriented choice may trade visual quality for responsiveness; the available evidence does not establish a particular FPS gain or the best choice for every system.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Community configuration guidance recommends using Sober’s Settings UI rather than hand-editing its configuration file. Make a change through the interface only if the relevant control is actually present in your version.
How to compare settings without guessing
- Choose one Roblox experience and play it with your usual settings. Note perceived smoothness and any crashes or rendering problems; if you already use a trusted FPS overlay, note its reading too.
- Change one setting only—for example, lower Roblox’s Graphics Quality or switch the Sober renderer if that control is available.
- Replay the same experience under similar conditions and compare smoothness, visuals, frame rate if measured, and stability.
- Keep the change only if it helps your priorities. If it makes the game less stable or the visuals unacceptable, restore the previous setting before testing another option.
This is a practical comparison method, not a benchmark: no controlled performance test establishes a winning setting or a specific gain for your hardware. A problem limited to one experience, or caused by a driver issue or system resource bottleneck, may not be fixed by Sober settings.

What Sober’s experimental status means
Sober is unofficial and experimental, and Roblox does not support it. The Sober project describes it as “a passion project rather than production-grade code” and says it “may be discontinued at any time.” Treat configuration advice as release-dependent, and avoid relying on Sober as though it were a stable, Roblox-supported platform.
