Choose SMF’s full-install package, upload it to the domain or a subdirectory, create the database, open the matching install.php URL, complete the browser installer, and remove the installer files immediately afterward.

What you need before installing SMF
SMF is free and open-source community-forum software, but the application still depends on the hosting environment around it. Prepare each of the following before uploading files:

- A domain and DNS control: Decide whether visitors will use the apex domain, such as
example.com, or a subpath, such asexample.com/forum. You must be able to create or change the records that direct the domain to your host. - A web server with PHP: The SMF 2.1 installation guide requires a web server that properly supports PHP. Confirm the PHP version supported by the exact SMF release you selected; do not rely on version numbers copied from an older guide.
- A supported database engine and database user: The installer needs a database, a login for that database, the database host, and usually a port. Check the release-specific database engines and required PHP extensions with your host.
- File access: You need a control-panel file manager, SFTP, FTP, or SSH access so you can upload the archive, extract it, and correct ownership or permissions if the installer reports a problem.
- Storage and backups: Leave room for the application, attachments, avatars, logs, and database growth. Arrange a backup method that covers both the database and uploaded files.
- Email delivery: Plan how the server will send registration, password-reset, and moderation messages. Hosting that cannot reliably deliver mail can make an otherwise successful installation difficult to operate.
Do not begin with DNS alone. A DNS record can point a name at an address, but it cannot provide PHP execution, a database, or writable application files.
Choose the domain location and create the hosting site
Apex-domain installation
Use the host’s primary document root when the forum should open at https://example.com/. Every file from the SMF package must ultimately be reachable from that root, including the installer at https://example.com/install.php during setup.

Subdirectory installation
Choose a directory such as forum when the domain will contain another site or when the forum should open at https://example.com/forum/. Upload SMF into that directory rather than one level above it. The installer URL then becomes https://example.com/forum/install.php.
Separate subdomain
A subdomain such as community.example.com is another deployment target. Create a separate site or virtual host in the hosting panel, note its document root, and point the subdomain’s DNS record to that site. The same PHP, database, permissions, and HTTPS requirements apply.
Point DNS to the server
DNS details depend on the registrar, DNS provider, hosting company, reverse proxy, and whether the host supplies an address or a provider-specific target. In general, create the A and/or AAAA record requested by the host, or use the provider-specific record it documents. If mail for the domain already exists, change only the web records you intend to change.
DNS changes are not instantaneous. Wait for the normal propagation behavior of your DNS provider, then verify that the chosen hostname resolves to the intended server before running the installer. Test both the exact hostname you will publish and any alternate hostname you plan to redirect. Do not assume that an apex record automatically configures www, or that an IPv6 record is correct merely because an IPv4 record works.
HTTPS configuration is also environment-specific. Use the certificate and web-server tooling supplied by the hosting stack, then select one canonical hostname and scheme—for example, HTTPS on the apex domain—and redirect other variants to it. The SMF installation steps do not prescribe a particular registrar, certificate authority, proxy, or web server, so follow the instructions for your own stack.
Verify PHP, database, and permission prerequisites
Check the selected SMF release
Before downloading, identify the release you intend to run and read its current requirements. Verify the PHP version, database engine, PHP extensions, storage allowance, and file-permission behavior with the host. Requirements can change between releases, and an old tutorial can leave you with a package that the server cannot execute.

Check database capabilities
Confirm that your hosting plan lets you create a database and a separate database user, grant the privileges needed during installation, and connect using the host and port supplied by the provider. Some hosts use a database server on the same machine; others provide a separate hostname. Record the values exactly as shown in the control panel.
Check filesystem ownership
SMF must be able to write the files and directories that the installer identifies. On managed hosting, the web-server account may already own the document root. On other systems, files uploaded through SFTP or extracted through SSH can belong to a different account. Know how to change ownership or modes through the file manager, SFTP/FTP client, or SSH before you start.
Download the correct SMF package
The official SMF download listing separates a full install from a large upgrade and a patch. A new domain requires the full-install package for the release you intend to run. Do not use an upgrade or patch archive: those packages assume an existing SMF installation and do not contain the complete fresh-install layout.
The observed official listing included an SMF 2.1.4 full-install option. Treat that as an example of the listing’s format, not as a permanent recommendation; check the current official listing immediately before downloading and record the release number you selected.

Keep the archive intact until you have confirmed that extraction preserves its directory structure. If you are working from SMF’s development repository instead of an official release archive, the repository requires Composer version 2 or higher and a composer install run. That workflow is intended for development; ordinary site owners should use the official release archive.
Upload and extract SMF
- Open the target document root. In the hosting panel, file manager, SFTP client, or SSH session, navigate to the root for the domain, subdomain, or selected subdirectory.
- Upload the full-install archive. Use the host’s file manager, SFTP, or FTP. A large archive can be more reliable over SFTP or through a server-side download facility if your host supplies one.
- Extract on the server. Extract the archive in the document root or in the directory chosen for the forum. If extraction creates an extra top-level folder, move the package contents so that
install.phpis directly inside the URL path you intend to use. - Preserve the package layout. Do not flatten only selected files or omit directories that appear unused. The installer and later administration tools expect the release’s complete structure.
- Check the URL before installing. For an apex deployment, confirm that the file path corresponds to
https://example.com/install.php. For a subdirectory deployment, confirm the corresponding/forum/install.phppath.
Do not expose the archive itself in a public directory after extraction. Remove the archive if it is no longer needed, or store it outside the web root.

Create a dedicated database and user
- Create the database. Use the hosting control panel’s database section and choose the engine supported by your SMF release.
- Create a database user. Use a dedicated login rather than sharing credentials with another application. Generate a strong, unique password and store it in a password manager.
- Grant the required privileges. Attach the user to the new database with the privileges the installer needs. Your host may present this as a permissions checklist or as an “add user to database” action.
- Record connection details. Write down the database name, username, password, host, and port exactly. Hosting panels often prepend an account name to the database and user, so the visible value may be longer than the name you entered.
- Choose a table prefix. If the database is shared with another application, use a unique prefix when the installer offers that option. A separate database remains easier to back up, restrict, and troubleshoot.
The database credentials are independent of your SMF administrator login. Keep both sets of credentials private and do not paste them into public support posts or source-control files.
Run the browser installer
- Open the installer URL. Browse to the
install.phppath that matches your deployment, such ashttps://example.com/forum/install.php. - Enter database settings. Supply the database server or host, port if required, database name, database user, password, and table prefix. Use the values created in the hosting panel, including any host-specific prefixes.
- Set forum details. Enter the forum name, administrator account, administrator email address, and password requested by the installer. Use an email address you can monitor because it may be needed for password recovery and system notices.
- Review the proposed configuration. Check the domain, path, database, and administrator information before allowing the installer to create tables and configuration files.
- Submit and wait for completion. Keep the browser open while the installer creates the database structure and writes the configuration. Do not refresh repeatedly or start a second installation if the first request is still processing.
- Sign in to the administrator area. After the installer reports success, open the administration area, confirm that the forum loads at its intended canonical URL, and review the basic email and path settings.
Exact field labels can vary by SMF release and host. If a field is not present, do not invent a value; use the host’s documented connection details and the options displayed by your selected release.
Fix permissions when the installer cannot write files
A permissions warning means that the web-server process cannot write a file or directory that SMF needs. The installer may offer to use FTP credentials when it cannot change permissions itself. That prompt is a fallback, not a reason to reuse an unrelated account.
Use the path shown by the host
First identify the exact filesystem path in the error message. The URL path, hosting-panel path, and operating-system path are not always identical. Correct the owner or mode through the host’s file manager, SFTP/FTP client, or SSH, according to the host’s documented model. Then reload the installer and test again.
Avoid broad, permanent write access
Do not make the entire server or document root globally writable simply to silence one warning. Grant only the access required by the web-server account and restore the narrowest practical settings after installation. If the host prevents you from changing ownership or permissions, open a support request with the exact path and error rather than repeatedly guessing.
Check for extraction ownership problems
Files extracted through SSH can be owned by a shell account while files uploaded through a panel may be owned by the web account, or the reverse. Mixed ownership commonly causes only some installer steps to fail. Make ownership consistent with the hosting stack before retrying.

Finish securely after installation
Remove installer and setup files
Delete install.php and any other installer or setup files that SMF identifies after completion. The installation guide warns that unattended installer files are a security risk: anyone who can reach them may attempt to rerun or interfere with setup. Do not leave the archive in the public directory either.
Confirm the canonical URL and HTTPS
Open the forum through the hostname and HTTPS scheme you intend to publish. Redirect alternate hostnames or HTTP requests to that canonical address using the rules appropriate to your web server or proxy. Test links, cookies, administrator pages, and password-reset URLs after the redirect is enabled.
Secure administration
Use a unique administrator password, limit administrative accounts to people who need them, and restrict administrative access through the controls available in your host and network. Keep the SMF core and installed extensions updated, and review administrator logs when your deployment provides them.
Set backups before inviting members
Back up the database and uploaded files as separate but coordinated components. A database-only backup cannot restore attachments and avatars; a files-only backup cannot restore users, posts, permissions, or configuration stored in the database. Schedule backups, retain more than one recovery point, and perform a test restoration before treating the backup as dependable.

Test mail and routine forum actions
Create a test account, confirm registration and password-reset messages, publish a test topic, upload an allowed attachment, and verify that moderation actions work. These checks expose mail, permissions, URL, and storage problems before real members encounter them.

Managed hosting can simplify certificates, updates, and backups but may restrict SSH, database settings, or custom web-server rules. A self-managed server offers more control over DNS, permissions, and tuning but makes patching, monitoring, TLS renewal, and recovery your responsibility.
Troubleshoot common first-install failures
The domain shows the wrong site
Recheck the DNS record, the selected virtual host or hosting site, and the document root. Confirm that the requested hostname—not merely the server’s IP address—maps to the site containing SMF. If DNS has only recently changed, allow the provider’s normal propagation interval and test from more than one network.
install.php downloads or displays as text
The web server is not passing PHP files to a working PHP handler. Verify that PHP is enabled for this site, that the selected version meets the SMF release requirements, and that the host’s PHP configuration applies to the correct document root.
The installer cannot connect to the database
Check every connection value, including account-name prefixes, database host, port, username, password, and database privileges. A database that exists on the host may still reject connections from the web server if the user was not attached correctly or if the host value is wrong.
A directory is reported as non-writable
Use the exact filesystem path in the warning, correct ownership or mode through the method supported by the host, and retry. If SMF asks for FTP details, use an account with access to that path and avoid leaving unnecessary credentials in configuration files.
The forum works at one URL but not another
Check whether the files are in the intended root or subdirectory and whether SMF’s configured path matches the public URL. Then check canonical redirects, HTTPS termination at a reverse proxy, and any host rule that changes the requested path.

Verify the administrator email and forum mail settings, inspect the host’s delivery or bounce logs, and test a second recipient. If the host limits outbound mail, use the relay or SMTP arrangement it documents rather than assuming that PHP mail will be delivered.

install.phpURL and complete the database and administrator fields. - Resolve any ownership or write-permission warnings using the host-supported method.
- Sign in, verify the configured domain, path, email, and basic forum actions.
- Remove installer and setup files, delete the public archive, enable HTTPS redirects, and establish tested backups.
