Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchProxmox VE notifications follow an event → matcher → target flow: an event occurs, a matcher decides whether it should be routed, and a target delivers it. Start in Datacenter → Notifications, configure a destination, create or review a matcher, then verify both that the event matches and that the destination receives it. Exact target options and interface labels vary by Proxmox VE release, so check the Administration Guide for the version you run.
How Proxmox VE notification routing works
A notification event represents a system event and carries metadata. A matcher applies conditions to that event and selects one or more targets. The target is the delivery channel, such as email or a webhook.

- Event: the occurrence Proxmox may report, along with available metadata.
- Matcher: the routing rules, which can use severity, a calendar or time constraint, or event metadata.
- Target: the configured destination that receives the resulting message.
A target by itself does not specify which events should be sent. Likewise, a metadata rule cannot match an event if that event does not include the field named in the rule.

How to configure Proxmox alerts
- Open the notification settings. In the web interface, go to Datacenter → Notifications. The exact controls shown depend on your installed release.
- Choose or create a target. Select a channel supported by your version, then enter the destination details it requires. Keep credentials and tokens private.
- Create or review a matcher. Choose the events to route by using the available severity, time/calendar, and metadata conditions. Add the target or targets that should receive matching events.
- Check the rule against a real event. Confirm that the event contains the metadata fields your conditions require and that its severity and timing satisfy the matcher.
- Verify delivery. Observe or trigger a representative event, confirm it matches the intended rule, and check the destination for the message. A successful configuration screen alone does not establish that the relay, endpoint, or recipient accepted delivery.
Proxmox documents general notification configuration in /etc/pve/notifications.cfg and sensitive target values, such as passwords or tokens, in the protected /etc/pve/priv/notifications.cfg location. Do not paste secrets into public examples, tickets, or shared configuration snippets.

Which notification channel should you use?
Choose a channel your infrastructure already operates and that recipients can reliably access. The following distinctions describe documented channel types; availability and configuration fields should be confirmed in the installed VE release.
| Channel | How it delivers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sendmail | Uses the local sendmail command and mail infrastructure. | Confirm local mail delivery works and identify where the recipient address is configured. |
| SMTP | Sends through an SMTP relay. | Check relay host and port, recipient, sender authorization, credentials, encryption mode, and the release-specific failure behavior. |
| Gotify | Pushes notifications to a Gotify instance. | Check instance reachability, URL, token handling, and support in your installed release. |
| Webhook | Sends an HTTP request to a configured endpoint; Proxmox-authored materials describe method, URL, headers, body, and templating. | Confirm the endpoint’s authentication, expected method and payload, secret handling, and network reachability. |
How to set up email notifications in Proxmox
For an SMTP target, use the values supplied by your mail provider or administrator. Proxmox VE documentation describes a relay server, recipient, optional username and password, sender identity, and encryption modes. The documented default ports are 25 for insecure, 587 for STARTTLS, and 465 for TLS; these are defaults associated with those modes, not a guarantee that every relay uses them.

- Use the relay hostname and port required by your mail service.
- Set the recipient address that should receive alerts.
- Use the required sender identity. Some relay policies require the From address to be authorized.
- Enable authentication only as required by the relay, and protect any username or password as a secret.
- Select the encryption mode supported by the relay. Do not assume that a port number alone proves encryption is configured correctly.
Related Proxmox Backup Server documentation says SMTP targets do not queue or retry a failed delivery. That is not sufficient evidence to assume identical behavior in every Proxmox VE release; verify the behavior for your version and relay.

- Confirm an event occurred. Check that the event is one your installed release reports as a notification event.
- Inspect the matcher conditions. Compare severity, any time/calendar restriction, and each metadata condition with the event’s actual values. A condition on an absent field will not match.
- Confirm the intended target is attached. Make sure the matching rule routes to the destination you are checking.
- Check destination-specific requirements. For mail, verify recipient, sender authorization, relay access, credentials, and encryption. For Gotify or a webhook, verify endpoint reachability and authentication.
- Review logs for delivery failures. Use the logging guidance for your installed VE release and the relevant destination. Proxmox Backup Server documentation points to Postfix messages for mail-related diagnosis, but verify the equivalent logging path on your VE system rather than assuming PBS instructions apply unchanged.
Do not treat a test or observed event as a universal health check: it validates only the event, matcher, and destination exercised. The available event fields, target types, interface labels, and failure behavior can differ across releases.
