How to Configure OBS Scene Switching for a 24/7 YouTube Playlist

Configure a looping VLC playlist in OBS, switch scenes manually or through WebSocket, and understand the YouTube archive limit for long broadcasts.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a YouTube playlist through OBS and change what viewers see, add the files to an OBS VLC Video source, create separate scenes for the playlist and any holding or information screens, then switch scenes with hotkeys or automate them through OBS WebSocket. These are separate jobs: OBS scene switching changes the picture being sent, but it does not schedule or restart the YouTube broadcast.

This guide covers a do-it-yourself OBS setup, the settings that affect playlist playback, ways to switch scenes, and the limits to plan for in a continuous stream.

1. Build scenes for the states viewers need to see

In OBS, create a scene for each distinct on-air layout—for example, the main playlist, a holding screen, and a break or information screen. Scenes can combine video, images, text, capture devices, and other sources. Give scenes and sources clear, distinct names: OBS documentation notes they share a global namespace.

Keep the scene collection focused on what viewers should see. A scene switch changes the composition OBS sends to its encoder; it does not start, stop, or schedule the YouTube broadcast.

2. Add a looping playlist with the VLC Video source

For a multi-file playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than treating the files as separate ordinary Media Sources. VLC must be installed on the computer running OBS. Match its architecture to OBS: OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

  1. Install VLC on the OBS computer, using the same bitness as OBS.
  2. Add a VLC Video source to the scene intended to show the playlist.
  3. Add the media files in the order you want them to play. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if the order should remain predictable.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should return to the beginning after the last item.
  5. Review Visibility Behaviour. OBS offers options that can stop or restart playback when a source is not visible. If the playlist source is hidden during a scene switch, the selected behavior determines what happens when it becomes visible again. Test it: media sources may take a short time to appear after being shown.

Keep the files at stable paths on the computer that runs OBS. Moving, renaming, or disconnecting them can break the playlist even if the scene itself is unchanged.

3. Choose how scenes will switch

Manual changes with hotkeys

Hotkeys are the straightforward option when an operator is present. In OBS’s Hotkeys settings, assign a different key to each scene-switch action. Choose keys that are not likely to be pressed accidentally, then test every assignment while monitoring the program output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare changes in Studio Mode

With Studio Mode, prepare a scene on the preview side and use the configured transition to take it live. This lets an operator check the next layout before viewers see it. The transition changes the output; it does not automate when the next change happens.

Automate through OBS WebSocket

OBS WebSocket provides an external control interface for scenes and sources and is included in OBS Studio 28 and later. An external client or custom integration can use it for remote or condition-driven control. Enable authentication and keep the password private.

There is no single universal schedule or macro procedure: exact setup depends on the client or integration you choose. Test the automation against your actual scene names and expected transitions before leaving it unattended.

Approach Best suited to Trade-off
Scene hotkeys An operator who needs direct scene control Native and simple, but does not provide unattended time-based scheduling on its own.
OBS WebSocket with an external client Remote control or time- and condition-based automation Flexible, but needs configuration, testing, and secured authentication; details depend on the client.
Third-party stream segmentation Automating broadcast segments, potentially to manage archives Adds API, compatibility, maintenance, and failure-handling dependencies; it is not an official YouTube guarantee.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube and verify the live output

  1. Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
  2. Enter the connection details in OBS’s stream settings. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
  3. Start sending from OBS, then check YouTube’s incoming preview and broadcast status before relying on the setup.
  4. Test a complete scene change and confirm the intended playlist behavior when its source is hidden and shown again.

YouTube says first-time live streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. Do not leave the first connection test until the moment you need the channel live.

5. Plan for continuous operation and YouTube archives

A 24/7 playlist is not just a loop setting. OBS, the host computer, media files, and network connection all need to remain available. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard considers intended use, computer resources, and network conditions, so it is a useful starting point—but not a guarantee of stable continuous operation. There is no universal computer specification or upload bitrate established for every scene collection; validate your full setup under realistic conditions.

Back up both parts of an OBS configuration: Profiles save stream, video, and output settings, while Scene Collections save scenes. One does not replace the other.

There is also an archive limitation to account for. YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This does not establish that a single broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours will have a complete archive. If a complete archive matters, plan shorter broadcast segments and verify YouTube’s current behavior.

A third-party OBS community listing for Live Stream Segmenter describes automation intended to keep streams under 12 hours. The listing showed version 1.1.4, published 2026-01-13, when checked on 2026-10-03. That is the plugin’s stated purpose, not proof of reliability or an official YouTube feature. Before depending on it, check supported OBS versions, API permissions, maintenance, and how it handles failures.

6. Troubleshoot common problems

  • The VLC source is missing or will not load: install VLC and confirm its bitness matches OBS. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • The playlist plays in an unexpected order: check that Shuffle Playlist is off and confirm the file order in the source.
  • The playlist stops or starts over after a scene change: check the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour. Test whether the source stops or restarts when hidden and shown.
  • The video takes a moment to appear after switching scenes: OBS documents that media sources may have a short delay when shown. Test the transition and choose a visibility behavior that suits the layout.
  • A hotkey does not switch the intended scene: check the scene-switch assignment in Hotkeys, ensure the key is not being intercepted or pressed accidentally, and test with the correct scene collection open.
  • An external automation cannot control OBS: confirm you are using OBS Studio 28 or later for built-in WebSocket, check the client’s connection details, and verify authentication without exposing the password.
  • YouTube does not show an incoming preview: check the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm OBS is sending, and review YouTube’s Live Control Room status. Keep the key private when troubleshooting.
  • The first broadcast cannot be enabled immediately: YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours; allow for that activation period.
  • A long broadcast does not have the expected full archive: YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule covers streams under 12 hours. A complete archive for one continuous longer stream is not established by that rule.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuously looping prerecorded video on YouTube, rather than operating an OBS scene collection, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
