How to Configure OBS for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Stream with H.264

Configure OBS for YouTube 4K60 with H.264, including stream-key setup, encoder settings, bitrate guidance, SDR and audio recommendations, and preflight checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream 4K at 60 fps to YouTube with OBS, use a YouTube stream key, set OBS’s output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, choose an available H.264 encoder, and configure CBR with a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for 2160p60 H.264 differs between its regional help pages, so check the current page for your region and test your upload connection before broadcasting.

Before you configure OBS

This setup is for a computer that can encode and upload a 3840×2160, 60 fps stream. Use the H.264 live-streaming guidance on YouTube’s recommended encoder settings and validate performance on your actual system; available encoders and their performance vary by computer and workload.

  • Confirm that your video source provides 4K at 60 fps and that your system can sustain that output while streaming.
  • Check your sustained upload capacity, not just a momentary peak. Leave headroom for bitrate variation and other network use.
  • Use YouTube’s stream-key workflow. An OBS resource describing a direct YouTube setup says that particular path does not support 4K; that limitation does not establish that every OBS connection method has the same restriction. See OBS’s YouTube setup guide.

Create or select a YouTube stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create a stream or select an existing one, then create or select its stream key.
  3. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key using the key workflow. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

YouTube detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically by default. YouTube also allows a custom stream key to be configured for manual resolution selection. The exact controls shown can vary with the stream-key workflow and current YouTube interface; follow the options displayed in Live Control Room.

Set OBS to 4K at 60 fps

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Video.
  2. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to 3840×2160 if your scene is designed at 4K. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 3840×2160 so OBS sends a 4K output rather than scaling down.
  3. Set Common FPS Values to 60. If the source, encoder, or connection cannot sustain 60 fps reliably, fix that limitation before relying on this output setting.

Configure H.264 output

  1. Open Settings → Output and set Output Mode to Advanced if the streaming controls you need are not visible.
  2. Under Streaming, select an available H.264 encoder. OBS setups differ, so choose an encoder supported by your system and test it under the real streaming workload rather than assuming a hardware or software encoder is always better. OBS’s encoding guidance explains that appropriate settings depend on the setup and use case.
  3. Set Rate Control to CBR (constant bitrate).
  4. Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and allows a maximum interval of four seconds.
  5. Set the video bitrate using the guidance in the next section. If OBS exposes profile or advanced H.264 controls, use the SDR recommendations below where available.

Choose a bitrate without treating regional guidance as one universal number

YouTube’s official English help results show different recommended H.264 bitrates for the same 2160p60 row: a regional page lists 14 Mbps minimum and 50 Mbps recommended, while another English regional page lists 35 Mbps recommended. The pages present the table differently, and neither result establishes that one number is a universal recommendation for every region. Check the current YouTube encoder-settings page serving your region and follow its 2160p60 H.264 guidance.

Whichever regional recommendation you use, verify that your connection can sustain the selected bitrate. Run an upload speed test, then do a preflight stream at the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. A speed test alone does not prove that the connection will remain stable during a broadcast.

Set SDR color and audio

SDR video

For standard dynamic range, YouTube recommends progressive scan, square pixels, Rec. 709 color, and 8-bit depth. Its advanced H.264 recommendations also specify CABAC, two B-frames, and one reference frame. OBS or a particular encoder may not expose every control in the same place; use the equivalent setting if available, and do not confuse SDR settings with an HDR workflow.

Start the stream and check its health

  1. In OBS, select Settings → Stream and confirm the YouTube service and stream key.
  2. Start streaming in OBS, then check the Live Control Room for incoming video, detected resolution and frame rate, and stream-health messages.
  3. Before the public event, test with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  4. Watch OBS for dropped frames or encoding strain and watch YouTube’s stream health during the event. If the stream is unstable, reduce the load or bitrate and retest rather than continuing with a failing 4K60 configuration.

At 4K/2160p, YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable; streams are set to normal latency.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube receives a lower resolution or frame rate than expected OBS output settings, source capability, or YouTube’s detected input Confirm both OBS resolutions are 3840×2160 and FPS is 60; check that the source actually supplies 4K60 and inspect the incoming signal shown in Live Control Room.
OBS reports dropped frames or the stream health is poor Upload stability or selected bitrate Check sustained upload capacity, reduce competing network traffic, and test again at the bitrate recommended by the current regional YouTube page.
Encoding overload, stutter, or missed frames Encoder capability or system load Check OBS’s performance/encoding guidance, close unnecessary workloads, and test a supported H.264 encoder under the intended scene and output settings.
The stream will not connect or the wrong channel receives it Service selection or stream key Recheck the YouTube service and key in OBS against the selected stream in Live Control Room. Replace a key if it may have been exposed.
Delay is higher than expected YouTube latency mode at 4K Account for normal latency; YouTube does not offer its low-latency option at 2160p.
