How to Configure Keyfile Authentication for MongoDB Replica Sets

Create, distribute, configure, rotate, and validate a MongoDB replica-set keyfile—and understand why MongoDB recommends stronger authentication methods for production.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To configure MongoDB keyfile authentication, create one base64 key, copy the identical file to every replica-set host, lock its UNIX permissions to owner-only, and start every mongod with the same security.keyFile and replication.replSetName settings. Use DNS-resolvable hostnames rather than IP-only member addresses, then verify that members and authenticated clients can connect. Keyfiles are straightforward for testing and development, but MongoDB recommends X.509, LDAP, or Kerberos for production because keyfiles have limited manageability and cryptographic strength.

What MongoDB keyfile authentication does

A replica set needs internal authentication so each mongod can prove its identity when it communicates with another member. A keyfile supplies the shared secret for that communication. Every member reads the file and uses its contents as the password for internal member authentication.

The design is intentionally shared: members do not receive separate identities from a keyfile. Instead, they must all be able to read the same key value. MongoDB permits one key string or a YAML sequence containing several strings. When a sequence is used, each member accepts any listed key, and the deployment remains functional while keys are changed in stages.

Supplying security.keyFile (or the command-line --keyFile) has a second effect in self-managed deployments: it enables role-based access control for clients. MongoDB’s manual states, “Enabling internal authentication also enables client authorization.” Applications that previously connected without database credentials therefore need a database user and an authentication mechanism after this change.

Plan names, addresses, and the security boundary first

Use hostnames that every member can resolve

Assign a DNS-resolvable hostname to each replica-set member and use those names in the bind and member configuration. Beginning with MongoDB 5.0, a node configured only with an IP address can fail startup validation. A hostname-based plan also makes address changes and certificate-based authentication easier later.

Before changing authentication, verify the network path in both directions: every member must be able to reach every other member on the MongoDB port, and the hostname each node advertises must resolve to an address reachable from the other hosts. Configure net.bindIp with the interfaces or hostnames that clients and replica-set peers actually use. Do not expose a newly authenticated service broadly just because the keyfile is protected; network firewalls and access controls remain necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a stable replica-set name

Pick one replica-set name, such as rs0, and use exactly that value in every member’s replication.replSetName setting or --replSet argument. The name is part of the member configuration, not a per-host value.

Understand the production limitation

MongoDB explicitly says: “Use keyfiles only for testing and development environments because of their limited manageability and cryptographic strength.” Treat a keyfile as a practical bootstrap or laboratory mechanism, not the preferred long-term control for a production replica set. For production, the MongoDB documentation recommends X.509 certificates, Self-Managed LDAP Proxy Authentication (Enterprise), or Kerberos (Enterprise). Those choices can provide stronger per-member identity and integrate with enterprise identity processes, although they require more planning and, for LDAP and Kerberos, the Enterprise edition.

Create a compliant keyfile on a protected host

A keyfile must be between 6 and 1024 characters and contain only base64 characters. The documented OpenSSL example creates a high-entropy value:

openssl rand -base64 756 > /etc/mongodb/keyfile
chmod 400 /etc/mongodb/keyfile

Run the command on a host where untrusted users and processes cannot read the output. The generated file should be treated like a password: do not paste it into tickets, shell transcripts, chat, source control, or configuration-management logs.

On UNIX systems, the file must not have group or world permissions. The chmod 400 example grants read access only to the owner. Make the account that runs mongod the owner, or arrange equivalent read access without adding group or world permissions. Check both the mode and ownership before starting the service. Windows does not perform the UNIX keyfile-permission check, but the file still needs to be protected by the operating system’s access-control rules.

The OpenSSL command writes a newline at the end of the redirected file on many systems. MongoDB’s parser accepts the generated keyfile format; do not edit or wrap the value in quotation marks after generation. If you create a key by another method, ensure that the resulting content remains within the character and length limits and contains only permitted base64 characters.

Copy the same keyfile to every member

Place a copy on each server that hosts a replica-set member. The contents must be identical when you are using a single key. Keep the path consistent, for example /etc/mongodb/keyfile, so every configuration file refers to an unambiguous absolute path.

Transfer the file through an administrative channel that preserves its contents and does not leave an extra readable copy. Avoid USB drives and network-attached storage that can be disconnected from the host; a member that cannot read its keyfile cannot start with internal authentication enabled. After copying, set the owner and restrictive mode on each destination and remove temporary transfer files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MongoDB’s requirement is that all members share at least one common key. This wording matters when you later use a multi-key YAML file: members may temporarily hold different lists, but the lists must overlap during the rollout so that every pair can authenticate.

Configure each mongod

Add the following settings to the configuration file on every member, adapting the hostnames to your deployment:

  keyFile: /etc/mongodb/keyfile
replication:
  replSetName: rs0
net:
  bindIp: localhost,mongo1.example.com,mongo2.example.com,mongo3.example.com

The command-line equivalent is:

mongod --keyFile /etc/mongodb/keyfile --replSet rs0 --bind_ip localhost,mongo1.example.com,mongo2.example.com,mongo3.example.com

Use one method consistently with the service manager that launches your database. Do not put a relative path in security.keyFile or --keyFile; use the absolute path to the protected file. Confirm that the service account can traverse the parent directories as well as read the file itself.

Purpose Configuration-file setting Command-line setting Requirement
Internal authentication secret security.keyFile: /etc/mongodb/keyfile --keyFile /etc/mongodb/keyfile Same readable key material on every member; absolute path
Replica-set identity replication.replSetName: rs0 --replSet rs0 Exactly the same name on every member
Network listeners net.bindIp: localhost,... --bind_ip localhost,... Include the required DNS-resolvable hostnames

Check for accidental differences between hosts: a misspelled path, a different replica-set name, or a hostname absent from one node can look like an authentication failure even when the key itself is correct.

Start a new replica set with authentication enabled

For a new deployment, configure and start every member with the keyfile and replica-set settings before initiating the replica set. Starting one node without the internal-authentication setting creates a configuration mismatch; starting all nodes with it establishes the intended security boundary from the beginning.

  1. Confirm DNS resolution and network reachability for every planned member hostname.
  2. Create the keyfile, set its owner and permissions, and copy it to each host.
  3. Install the configuration containing security.keyFile, replication.replSetName, and the required net.bindIp values on every host.
  4. Start each mongod process and inspect its service output for configuration, file-access, or hostname-validation errors.
  5. After all members are running with matching settings, initiate the replica set using your normal administrative connection.
  6. Create database users and configure applications to authenticate, because client authorization is enabled along with internal authentication.

The exact initiation document and service commands depend on the deployment tooling and member layout; the keyfile requirement itself does not change. Do not infer successful authentication merely from a process that stays running: verify member connectivity and an authenticated client session.

Enable keyfiles on an existing replica set

An existing set requires a controlled restart because each mongod must begin with the new setting. Use an availability-preserving operational sequence appropriate to your deployment, normally restarting members one at a time while maintaining the required voting and serving capacity. The safe order, maintenance window, and monitoring thresholds depend on the number and roles of your members; do not restart all processes simultaneously.

  1. Prepare and distribute the keyfile, but do not remove the existing working configuration yet.
  2. Update the service configuration on each host with the absolute keyfile path and verify ownership, mode, and hostname settings.
  3. Restart one member according to your operational runbook, then confirm it rejoins and can communicate with the remaining members.
  4. Proceed member by member only after the previous restart is healthy. Keep an eye on member state, client errors, and replication health.
  5. When all members use the keyfile, test an authenticated administrative connection and an application connection before closing the change.

Do not assume that a restart preserving process availability also preserves application access: enabling keyfile authentication turns on client authorization, so applications without database credentials may fail even if the replica set remains healthy.

Configure client authentication after the change

Internal member authentication and client authorization are related but distinct paths. The keyfile lets replica-set members authenticate to one another; users and roles govern what applications and administrators can do. Create the necessary database users through your established administrative process and update connection settings to supply credentials and the correct authentication database.

Use a least-privilege role for each application rather than reusing an administrative account. Test the exact connection method used by the application, including its driver options, before production traffic is switched. A successful unauthenticated connection after the change is not evidence that authorization is configured correctly; it may indicate that the client is reaching a different process or an unintended listener.

Validate the deployment operationally

Validation should cover process startup, member-to-member communication, and client access. MongoDB’s documented requirements establish what to configure; they do not substitute for checks in your environment.

  • File access: On every host, verify that the service account can read the absolute keyfile path and that UNIX mode does not grant group or world permissions.
  • Hostname reachability: Resolve every configured member hostname from every other member and confirm that the MongoDB listener is reachable through the intended interface.
  • Process startup: Review service logs for keyfile parsing, permission, bind, or replica-set-name errors.
  • Replica-set health: Confirm that members can authenticate to one another and reach their expected operational states.
  • Authenticated client access: Connect with a database user, run a permitted operation, and verify that an account lacking that permission is rejected.
  • Application behavior: Exercise connection pooling, failover handling, and startup credentials using the same driver configuration as the application.

If a member cannot start, first separate local file problems from network problems. A permission error points to ownership, mode, or parent-directory traversal; a hostname or bind error points to DNS and net.bindIp; a member-authentication error often means the files do not share a common key or the replica-set names differ.

Use multiple keys for a rolling key change

MongoDB accepts a YAML sequence instead of a single key string:

- old-key-value
- new-key-value

This format supports a staged rotation. Introduce the new key while retaining the old key as a common value, update members in a controlled sequence, and remove the old value only after every member has the new key and all expected connections are healthy. Keep the file permissions restrictive throughout the process.

  1. Create the new key value within the 6-to-1024-character and base64-character requirements.
  2. Build a multi-key file containing the old and new values, and distribute it so that every member has at least one common key with every other member.
  3. Restart or reload members according to the deployment’s availability-preserving procedure, verifying health after each change.
  4. After the rollout is complete and no member depends on the old value, replace the multi-key file with a file containing only the new key.
  5. Remove obsolete copies and temporary files, then recheck ownership and permissions.

Do not delete the old value at the start of a rotation. A member updated too early would have no shared key with peers still using the old-only file.

Troubleshoot common failures

The process refuses to start with a keyfile error

Check the absolute path, file existence, owner, mode, and parent-directory permissions under the account that launches mongod. On UNIX, group or world permissions can invalidate the file even when the contents are correct. On Windows, inspect the file’s access-control entries instead of applying UNIX mode commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Members cannot authenticate to one another

Compare the file contents byte for byte, including accidental edits, and confirm that every member uses the same replica-set name. During a multi-key rotation, verify that the key lists overlap. Also confirm that each host resolves and can reach the other hosts through the addresses in net.bindIp.

MongoDB 5.0 or later rejects the address configuration

Replace IP-only member configuration with DNS-resolvable hostnames and ensure those names are included in the bind settings and replica-set member definitions. Test resolution from each member rather than only from an administrator’s workstation.

Applications suddenly receive authorization errors

That behavior is expected when keyfile authentication is first enabled without preparing client credentials: client authorization is enabled at the same time. Create or use the required database user, supply credentials through the driver’s supported options, and confirm that its roles cover only the operations it needs.

A rotation leaves one member offline

Restore a common key without changing unrelated settings. Compare the affected member’s key list with a healthy peer, correct the file and permissions, and restart it through the normal operational procedure. Do not remove the old key from healthy members until the outlier has rejoined and the new key is known to work everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare keyfiles with production-oriented authentication methods

Authentication method Operational manageability Cryptographic or identity model Rotation approach Deployment complexity and edition considerations
Keyfile Simple file distribution, but one shared secret must be protected on every member Shared password-style secret; no distinct identity per member Single key or overlapping YAML key lists during a rolling change Lowest setup complexity; MongoDB limits its recommendation to testing and development
X.509 certificates Certificate issuance, trust, expiry, and revocation must be managed Certificate-based identity for members and clients Issue and deploy replacement certificates before expiry, following the certificate-management plan More involved than a keyfile; recommended by MongoDB for production
LDAP proxy authentication Centralizes identity and policy in an enterprise directory Enterprise directory-backed authentication Managed through directory and proxy lifecycle procedures Enterprise feature and infrastructure required; recommended for production use cases that need LDAP integration
Kerberos Uses an enterprise ticketing and identity environment Enterprise identity and ticket-based authentication Handled through Kerberos principals, tickets, and keytab lifecycle controls Enterprise feature and substantial infrastructure; recommended for suitable production environments

The practical distinction is not merely setup time. A keyfile gives every member the same shared secret, so compromise of that secret affects the whole set. X.509, LDAP, and Kerberos introduce stronger identity or centralized management at the cost of certificate, directory, or ticket infrastructure. Select the method that matches your organization’s identity controls and operational capability rather than treating the keyfile as a universal production solution.

Deployment checklist

  • Every member has a DNS-resolvable hostname and can reach its peers.
  • The same replica-set name is configured everywhere.
  • The key is 6–1024 base64 characters.
  • Each host has the same key material, or overlapping key lists during rotation.
  • The service account can read the absolute keyfile path.
  • UNIX permissions are owner-only; Windows access controls are equivalently restrictive.
  • security.keyFile and replication.replSetName are present on every member.
  • Members are restarted in an availability-preserving sequence when adding authentication to an existing set.
  • Database users and application credentials are ready before client authorization is enabled.
  • Member health, authenticated client access, and application failover have been tested.
  • A production deployment has evaluated X.509, LDAP, or Kerberos instead of relying on a keyfile as its long-term control.

Source and version notes

The key length range, permission rules, hostname requirement, multi-key format, and production guidance above follow MongoDB’s current self-managed replica-set authentication documentation as accessed October 15, 2026. The IP-only startup-validation warning applies beginning with MongoDB 5.0. Exact service-manager commands, firewall rules, replica-set topology, and client-driver syntax vary by operating system and deployment tooling, so apply the documented settings within your platform’s operational runbook.
