For an HTTP(S) radio stream, put FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options before the input URL. Start with the three core options below to retry a dropped connection, a streamed-input error, or an unexpected end of stream; add network-error and HTTP-status retries when they match the failure you see.
Start with this HTTP(S) command
This example copies the incoming audio into an MP3 container without re-encoding. Replace the example URL with the station’s actual HTTP(S) stream URL. The retry limit and delay cap are example policy choices, not values guaranteed to suit every station.

-c copy output.mp3These are HTTP protocol options: place them before -i so they configure that input. They are not a universal reconnect recipe for RTSP, RTP, SRT, or other transports. Check the stream’s protocol and your local FFmpeg build before relying on them.
What each reconnect option does
-reconnect 1retries a disconnection before the input reaches EOF.-reconnect_streamed 1allows retries for streamed or non-seekable inputs, common for live radio feeds.-reconnect_at_eof 1treats EOF as an error and reconnects. The FFmpeg documentation describes this as useful for “live / endless streams.”-reconnect_on_network_error 1retries TCP or TLS errors during connection establishment.-reconnect_on_http_error 5xxretries selected HTTP response codes. FFmpeg accepts individual codes, such as503, and classes such as4xxor5xx. Choose only responses that might be temporary for your source.-reconnect_delay_max 30sets an example maximum delay in seconds under this retry policy.-reconnect_max_retries 20bounds the example retry count. The FFmpeg documentation says the default is unset.
Choose retry limits for the job
A retry policy trades recovery time against how long FFmpeg keeps trying. Set a maximum retry count when the job must eventually stop or be supervised, and select a delay cap that fits the interruption you can tolerate. You can also set -reconnect_delay_total_max N to cap total retry delay in seconds. Choose N for your use case rather than treating any example value as universal.

The HTTP documentation says respect_retry_after is enabled by default: when the server supplies a Retry-After delay, FFmpeg can honor it instead of using exponential backoff. The documentation identifies HTTP 429 and 503 as useful cases. Option names, accepted values, and defaults may vary by release, so check your installed binary with ffmpeg -h protocol=http.
Troubleshoot a stream that still stops
- Confirm the protocol. Identify the URL’s transport from the station’s documentation. Use these settings only when FFmpeg is handling an HTTP(S) input through its HTTP protocol.
- Check option placement. Put the HTTP options before the relevant
-i. With multiple inputs, place each set before the input it should configure. - Match retries to the failure. Begin with
reconnect,reconnect_streamed, andreconnect_at_eof. Add network-error or HTTP-status handling only if logs show those are the failure types. - Read the logs during an interruption. Determine whether FFmpeg encountered EOF, a TCP/TLS connection failure, an HTTP status response, authentication failure, or a protocol mismatch. Retrying cannot repair an invalid URL or credentials.
- Inspect the local build. Use
ffmpeg -h protocol=httpto see which HTTP options the installed binary recognizes, then adjust the command if necessary.
ICY station and track metadata is separate
Reconnect behavior does not itself provide station titles or track information. FFmpeg’s HTTP documentation says icy=1 requests ICY metadata by default when supported. An application that needs to use it must read icy_metadata_headers and icy_metadata_packet.
