To stream a continuous Hindi podcast from a Linux VPS, run Icecast as the streaming server and use FFmpeg as its source client: FFmpeg encodes the audio and sends it to an Icecast mountpoint, and listeners connect to that mountpoint. The example below uses MP3 as a broadly compatible option—not a Hindi-specific requirement. Replace the example host, input file, and password with your own values, then test the stream from outside the VPS.
Understand the FFmpeg–Icecast setup
FFmpeg and Icecast have different jobs. FFmpeg reads and encodes the audio, then publishes it as an Icecast source. Icecast accepts that source and distributes it to listeners. Both programs can run on the same VPS, although the Icecast documentation describes them as commonly separate components.

Install and configure Icecast
Install Icecast using the package for your Linux distribution when available. Find that package’s configuration file and service-management instructions; configuration paths and startup methods differ between distributions. The generic Icecast command is icecast -c /path/to/icecast.xml, but a packaged installation may use a service command instead.

In the Icecast configuration, set a hostname or public address, a source password, a separate admin password, a listening address and port, a client limit, and a log location. Use a non-default password for each role. Keep the source credential private: avoid putting a live password in public scripts, shell history, process listings, or logs. For production, inject secrets through a method appropriate to your deployment.
Before starting the source, confirm Icecast starts successfully and note the hostname, port, and source credentials it expects. The Icecast basic setup guide describes the server configuration and status checks.
Choose an audio format and settings
Hindi does not require a special codec or FFmpeg language setting. Choose an output format that works with the listener apps you expect to support and that your Icecast server accepts. MP3 is a practical example for broad compatibility, but it is not the only option and the settings below are illustrative, not a tested command or a universal quality recommendation.

This example reads a local WAV file, selects its first audio stream, encodes stereo MP3 at 128 kbit/s and 44.1 kHz, and publishes to the mountpoint /hindi:

Keep the URL’s password out of shared scripts and logs. FFmpeg documents the Icecast output URL form as icecast://username[:password]@server:port/mountpoint; its Icecast protocol documentation covers connection options, including TLS support for HTTPS endpoints.
Adjust channels, bitrate, and stream selection
- Channels: The example uses stereo. For speech-only audio, mono may reduce bandwidth; choose based on listening quality and the needs of your program.
- Bitrate: The example’s 128 kbit/s is not an official or Hindi-specific optimum. Consider intelligibility, listener compatibility, and bandwidth—especially the total outbound traffic when multiple people listen at once.
- Input selection:
-map 0:a:0explicitly selects the first audio stream. If the input contains multiple audio tracks, map the one you intend to broadcast. - Encoder availability: The example uses
libmp3lame. Encoder availability depends on how FFmpeg was built. Check the installed build withffmpeg -encodersbefore relying on a particular encoder. - Content type and metadata: Set
-content_typeexplicitly when the chosen output needs a non-default content type. Add metadata if you want the stream to identify the program or track; the metadata fields and behavior depend on the format and client.
Use -re when reading a prerecorded file so FFmpeg reads it at its native rate for live-style streaming. It is generally not needed for an actual real-time input. For a microphone or mixer connected to Linux, replace the file input with the correct capture input and device; the device-specific command depends on the VPS audio setup.

FFmpeg’s online documentation is rolling and may differ from an older distribution binary. Check ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders on the VPS, then use documentation that matches that installed release. See the FFmpeg documentation for input, mapping, and encoding options.
Publish to the mountpoint
Start Icecast first, then run the FFmpeg command with the correct source username, password, host, port, and mountpoint. If FFmpeg cannot connect, check that the Icecast source password matches, the server is listening on the specified address and port, and the selected format is accepted by the server.
Mountpoints should be short and avoid spaces or unusual characters. Icecast recommends an .ogg suffix for Ogg Vorbis mountpoints; MP3 mountpoints usually omit a file extension. The example’s /hindi mountpoint is an MP3 example, so its listener URL is the server address followed by /hindi.

Secure and expose the stream
Allow the Icecast listener port through both the VPS firewall and any provider-level network firewall. An open port alone does not configure encryption. If you want HTTPS, configure an Icecast endpoint that supports it, confirm FFmpeg has the required network and TLS support, and verify the certificate. FFmpeg documents a TLS option for Icecast connections; the relevant option and endpoint configuration must match your installed build and server setup.
For a public stream, also decide whether listeners should have unrestricted access and how you will monitor errors or misuse. Firewall rules, TLS termination, and access controls vary by distribution and provider, so there is no universal port or deployment command to apply blindly.

- Check Icecast’s log. Look for startup errors, rejected source connections, or format problems in the configured log location.
- Check server status. Open the admin stats URL on the configured host and port; Icecast’s basic setup guide commonly uses
/admin/stats.xsl. Confirm that the source is connected and the expected mountpoint is present. - Test as a listener. Open the public mountpoint URL in a compatible audio player from another device or network, not just from the VPS. A listener URL is the Icecast server address plus the mountpoint. Icecast also documents an
.m3uplaylist form.
For example, if the public server is stream.example.com, listens on port 8000, and the source uses /hindi, the listener address is http://stream.example.com:8000/hindi unless you have configured HTTPS or a different public endpoint. Use your actual hostname, port, and mountpoint.

Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg reports a connection or authentication error: Compare the URL’s host, port, source username, and password with Icecast’s configuration. Check that Icecast is running and listening on the reachable address, and that both firewall layers allow the listener port.
- The source connects but listeners hear nothing: Confirm the command maps an audio stream, that the input file contains audio, and that the mountpoint is the one being tested. Check Icecast logs and stats for a live source.
- The server or player rejects the format: Verify that FFmpeg includes the selected encoder, that
-fand-content_typematch the encoded format, and that Icecast accepts it. Try a compatible player to distinguish a client limitation from a server or encoding problem. - The stream plays too quickly or ends unexpectedly: When streaming a prerecorded file, use
-reto read it at its native rate. Check that the input file is accessible and long enough for the intended broadcast; this command does not by itself create an endless playlist. - HTTPS fails despite changing the port: A port change does not enable TLS. Verify TLS support in the installed FFmpeg build and configure a working HTTPS-capable Icecast endpoint and certificate.
- The stream works locally but not for remote listeners: Check the VPS firewall and provider firewall, public hostname, listening address, and external route. Test from a different network to avoid mistaking a local-only success for public availability.
