Put your changes in jail.local or a file under /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/, set the destination and sender, choose action_mw or action_mwl, then verify Fail2ban and the MTA separately. This guide shows a safe configuration for an SSH jail, explains the logging backends and thresholds, and provides a troubleshooting path for missing alerts.

What you need before configuring email alerts
Email notification is not provided by the ban engine alone. Fail2ban detects matching log entries, runs the action assigned to the jail, and that action calls a mail program. The mail program then hands the message to an MTA and, usually, an upstream relay before it reaches the recipient.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Fail2ban installed and running. You need administrative access to edit its configuration and restart the service.
- A working MTA. Ubuntu’s Fail2ban guidance explicitly says that sendmail or another MTA is required. Installing an email action without an MTA leaves Fail2ban able to ban addresses but unable to submit mail.
- A destination mailbox. Use an address you monitor, and make sure the sender identity is accepted by your local MTA or relay.
- Accurate log access. The selected jail, filter, backend, and log source must match the way your host records authentication failures.
- A safe test source. Have an allowed administration path or console access before testing. A mistaken SSH rule can ban your own address.
Do not edit the vendor-supplied jail.conf directly. Package updates can replace it. Local files are intended to hold your site-specific values while preserving the defaults that document every available option.
Choose the notification action
Fail2ban’s upstream action definitions provide several useful choices. The action is configured globally under [DEFAULT] or overridden for an individual jail.

| Action | What happens when an address is banned | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
action_mw |
Applies the ban and sends an email containing a Whois report to destemail. |
Use when you want a compact alert with basic ownership information. |
action_mwl |
Applies the ban and sends the Whois report plus relevant matching log lines. | Use when the alert should contain enough event context for an initial investigation. |
action_ |
Performs the ban without the email notification supplied by the mail actions. | Use only when you intentionally want ban-only behavior. |
| Apprise actions | Send through an Apprise-supported external notification service after you provide its separate configuration and credentials. | Use an external channel when it fits your operations; it is a different action path from the local-MTA mail actions. |
The extra log lines in action_mwl improve context but can expose usernames, paths, or other information from authentication logs. Send those messages only to a mailbox with appropriate access controls. If you need the smallest useful notification, start with action_mw; if each alert must be investigated from the message itself, choose action_mwl.
Install and validate the mail-transfer agent
Install an MTA using your operating system’s supported package and configuration process. The Fail2ban action expects a sendmail-compatible submission path, or another path defined by the action you selected. The exact package and relay setup varies by distribution and hosting environment, so confirm which binary and policy your action uses.
- Install or enable the MTA according to your distribution’s documentation.
- Configure its local hostname, sender policy, DNS requirements, and (if applicable) an authenticated upstream relay.
- Send a test message using the MTA’s own testing procedure, without involving Fail2ban.
- Check the MTA log and the recipient mailbox, including spam or quarantine folders.
This independent test matters because a successful Fail2ban action invocation proves only that Fail2ban ran the configured command. It does not prove that the MTA accepted the message, that a relay permitted it, or that the recipient’s provider delivered it.
Create a local Fail2ban override
You can keep all local settings in /etc/fail2ban/jail.local, or use a dedicated file under /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/ when your distribution supports that layout. A dedicated file is often easier to maintain because it limits your override to the values you actually changed.
Option 1: copy the main configuration
sudo cp /etc/fail2ban/jail.conf /etc/fail2ban/jail.local
sudoedit /etc/fail2ban/jail.local
The copy gives you a complete local file to inspect and edit. Keep in mind that it can contain many distribution defaults; change only the notification and jail values you need.
Option 2: create a focused file in jail.d
Create a new local file in /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/ and place only your overrides there. This approach leaves the package’s main configuration untouched and makes later audits easier. The exact filename is distribution-dependent, but it should use the supported Fail2ban configuration-file extension.

Set the global email values
Add or override these values in the [DEFAULT] section of your local configuration:
[DEFAULT]
destemail = [email protected]
sender = [email protected]
mta = sendmail
action = %(action_mwl)s
destemail is the recipient of ban notices. sender is the address Fail2ban supplies to the MTA. mta identifies the mail submission method expected by the action. The final line selects the detailed mail action; replace it with %(action_mw)s when you want the Whois report without matching log lines.
Use an address and sender that your MTA and relay permit. A syntactically valid sender does not guarantee delivery: domain authentication, reverse DNS, relay restrictions, spam scoring, and recipient policy can all intervene after Fail2ban has handed off the message.
Enable a jail and define its thresholds
For an SSH service, a local configuration can include the following jail. Adapt the log source and filter to your host rather than copying values blindly:
[sshd]
enabled = true
port = ssh
filter = sshd
logpath = %(sshd_log)s
maxretry = 5
findtime = 10m
bantime = 1h
enabled = true activates the jail. port identifies the protected service, while filter selects the pattern definitions that recognize failed SSH authentication. logpath must resolve to the log source your system actually uses.
The three threshold values work together:
maxretry: the number of matching failures allowed before a ban.findtime: the time window in which those failures must occur.bantime: how long the resulting ban remains active.
These values are examples, not universal security settings. A public SSH service with frequent automated scans may need a different balance from an internal server with occasional users. Change one variable at a time and observe the effect so that an overly sensitive rule does not create a flood of alerts or block legitimate administrators.

Match the backend to your logging system
A correctly written filter still cannot trigger if Fail2ban is watching the wrong source. The documented backends include systemd, polling, pyinotify, and auto.
| Backend | Use it when | Configuration concern |
|---|---|---|
systemd |
The service writes to the systemd journal rather than a conventional log file. | Use the appropriate journal selection, such as a valid journalmatch, instead of assuming a file path exists. |
polling |
Fail2ban should periodically read files. | Provide a valid logpath and account for the polling interval. |
pyinotify |
The host supports file-event monitoring and the service writes to files. | Ensure the monitored files and required Python support are available on the host. |
auto |
You want Fail2ban to select an available method. | Confirm the automatic choice matches your actual logs; do not assume it will bridge a missing or incorrect path. |
On a journal-only installation, a file-oriented logpath can leave the jail idle even though SSH failures are visible through the journal. Conversely, a file backend cannot see entries that are never written to the file it monitors. Check the service’s logging configuration and use the backend and selector that correspond to it.
Reload Fail2ban and inspect the parsed configuration
After saving the local file, restart the service and inspect both the global status and the specific jail:
sudo systemctl restart fail2ban
sudo fail2ban-client status
sudo fail2ban-client status sshd
The first status command should list the enabled jails. The jail-specific output should show its filter and currently banned addresses. If the service refuses to start, dump the parsed configuration before trying another restart:
sudo fail2ban-client -d
This diagnostic output helps expose interpolation mistakes, misspelled options, invalid quoting, and values inherited from an unexpected file. Fix the reported configuration issue, run the dump again, and restart only after the parsed result is valid.
Verify that a ban produces a message
Test from a controlled source that you can safely lose temporarily. Do not deliberately attack the service from an unknown network or test while your only administration path depends on the address being evaluated.

- Confirm that your administrative address is covered by the jail’s exclusions before generating failures.
- Produce a small, controlled number of authentication failures from the test source, staying within a maintenance window.
- Watch the Fail2ban log for the filter match, ban event, and action execution.
- Check the MTA log at the same time for message acceptance, relay attempts, or rejection.
- Confirm receipt in the destination mailbox and inspect spam or quarantine folders.
- Run
sudo fail2ban-client status sshdto verify that the expected address was actually banned.
If Fail2ban reports that the action ran but no message appears, treat the result as two separate investigations: first confirm that the MTA accepted a message, then investigate relay and recipient delivery. Firewall rules, DNS, sender identity, relay policy, and spam filtering are outside Fail2ban’s ban decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot missing or incorrect notifications
No email action appears in the configuration
Check the effective action for the affected jail. A ban-only setting such as action = %(action_)s will never send mail. Set the global value to %(action_mw)s or %(action_mwl)s, or override the action inside the specific jail. Then run sudo fail2ban-client -d to verify that interpolation produced the action you intended.
The jail never triggers
Confirm all four links in the chain:
- The jail has
enabled = true. - The filter name matches the service and recognizes the actual failure text.
- The
logpathorjournalmatchpoints to the source where failures are recorded. - The selected backend can read that source.
Also check the threshold. A source producing four failures will not be banned by a jail requiring five matches within its findtime. Review the Fail2ban log and the service log together so you can distinguish a filter problem from a logging problem.
Fail2ban starts but rejects the file
Interpolation and quoting errors are common when values contain special characters or when a section is accidentally nested under the wrong header. Use the debug dump command, inspect the exact effective values, and correct the local override rather than editing the vendor file. A restart is useful only after the parser accepts the configuration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The mail command fails
Verify that the MTA binary expected by the selected action exists, is executable, and can deliver an independent test message. Check the MTA log for local permission failures, rejected sender identities, unavailable relays, DNS errors, or policy responses. If the MTA cannot submit a test message on its own, changing Fail2ban thresholds will not solve the delivery problem.
The wrong address is banned
Review ignoreip and any address or hostname exclusions before testing again. Fail2ban’s documentation warns that reverse and forward DNS can disagree. A hostname that resolves to an unexpected address, or a changed administrator address not covered by ignoreip, can create a lockout. Prefer carefully verified addresses for critical administration and maintain an out-of-band recovery path.
Best Value
There are too many or too few alerts
Adjust maxretry, findtime, and bantime as a set. Lowering maxretry makes bans and emails more sensitive but increases the chance of catching mistyped passwords or scripted health checks. Increasing findtime catches slower attacks but can accumulate unrelated events. A longer bantime reduces repeat traffic yet extends the impact of a false positive. Make changes gradually and monitor both legitimate login failures and alert volume.
Use local files for maintainable overrides
Keep package defaults intact and record why each local value exists. A focused file under /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/ can contain the notification defaults, while a separate file can hold service-specific jails. This separation makes it easier to identify whether a future problem comes from a changed action, filter, backend, or threshold.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Whenever the distribution updates Fail2ban, review the upstream action definitions and your local overrides. Defaults, filter names, and supported backends can evolve. Re-run the status checks and a controlled notification test after a significant package or MTA change.
Alternative: external notifications through Apprise
Fail2ban also documents Apprise actions for external notification services. This route requires its own Apprise configuration and credentials for the selected service. It can be useful when your operations team already monitors an external channel, but it is not a substitute for a functioning MTA when you choose action_mw or action_mwl.
The Fail2ban configuration advertises support for more than 120 services through Apprise; that vendor-maintained capability claim can change with releases. Treat the external service, credentials, and network path as additional dependencies and test them independently, just as you would test an MTA.
Quick Recap
A safe operating checklist
- Use
jail.localorjail.d, not the packagedjail.conf, for local changes. - Set
destemail,sender, and the appropriate MTA value. - Select
action_mwfor Whois-only mail oraction_mwlfor Whois plus matching log lines. - Ensure an MTA can deliver an independent test message.
- Match the backend and log selector to the host’s journal or files.
- Confirm
enabled,filter, and threshold values for every jail. - Protect administration addresses with a verified
ignoreippolicy and an alternate access path. - Restart Fail2ban, inspect both status commands, and use
fail2ban-client -dwhen parsing is uncertain. - During a controlled test, inspect Fail2ban and MTA logs together; mailbox delivery is a separate stage.
