What Fail2ban does on a Linux VPS
Fail2ban watches authentication and other service logs for patterns that indicate repeated abuse. A jail combines a log filter with a time window, retry limit, and ban action. When an address exceeds the retry limit inside that window, Fail2ban asks the firewall action configured for the jail to block it for the ban period. The service does not replace SSH keys, a firewall, patching, or least-privilege administration; it adds an automated response to repeated failures.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a typical VPS, the first jail to configure is sshd, because exposed SSH services receive automated login attempts. Fail2ban only acts on events it can read, so the log backend and the filter must match your distribution. A correctly written file that points at a nonexistent log source will not protect anything.
Before you configure Fail2ban
Keep a recovery session open
Open a second SSH session, a provider console, or another out-of-band recovery path before testing bans. A mistake in ignoreip, an overly strict retry limit, or a firewall action can lock out the address you use to administer the VPS. Do not close the working session until the new configuration has been reloaded and checked.

Collect the addresses that must never be banned
List the public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, VPN ranges, monitoring networks, or management subnets that legitimately connect to the server. You will place them in ignoreip. A dynamic residential address can change, so do not permanently trust a broad range merely because it contains your current address. If your provider uses a private management network, include that network only when you understand its routing and trust boundary.
Confirm the installed version and logging model
Defaults and supported options vary between Fail2ban releases. Check the installed manual with man 5 jail.conf and confirm that fail2ban-client is available. On systemd-based distributions, SSH messages may be in the journal rather than /var/log/auth.log. Knowing which source contains recent failed-login entries prevents you from debugging a configuration that is watching the wrong place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to configure fail2ban without losing upgrades
Fail2ban reads configuration in layers. The effective order is:
jail.confjail.d/*.confjail.localjail.d/*.local
A later file overrides an earlier value. The distributed .conf files are intended to remain unchanged so package upgrades can replace them safely. Put your site-specific settings in /etc/fail2ban/jail.local (or a suitably named file ending in .local under jail.d). This also makes it clear which settings belong to your VPS rather than to the distribution package.
Step 1: create a fail2ban jail.local example
Create or edit the local override as root:
sudo editor /etc/fail2ban/jail.local
If the file does not exist, creating it is sufficient; you do not need to copy the entire vendor jail.conf. Start with a small configuration that has an explicit trusted-address list and one SSH jail:
[DEFAULT]
# Keep loopback and your administration addresses out of bans.
ignoreip = 127.0.0.1/8 ::1 203.0.113.10 2001:db8:1234::/64
# Example values; adjust to your risk tolerance.
bantime = 3600
findtime = 600
maxretry = 5
[sshd]
enabled = true
port = ssh
filter = sshd
The addresses in this sample use documentation ranges. Replace them with addresses you actually control; leaving the sample values in place does not protect your management connection. Whitespace around the equals sign is allowed, but spelling the option and section names correctly is essential.

Step 2: choose the shared defaults
ignoreip: protect administrators first
ignoreip accepts individual addresses and networks. Include loopback and every trusted management source before enabling the SSH jail. Fail2ban evaluates this allow-list before applying a ban, so an address listed here will not be blocked by the configured jails. Keep the list narrow: trusting an entire cloud provider range or an unrestricted corporate network can turn a protection rule into an accidental bypass.
bantime: how long a ban lasts
bantime is expressed in seconds. The example value 3600 is one hour. A longer value reduces repeated attempts from the same address but increases the impact of a false positive. Some versions support additional duration formats or incremental bans; consult the manual installed on your VPS rather than assuming an option exists.
findtime: the observation window
findtime defines the period in which failures are counted. The example 600 represents ten minutes. A shorter window focuses on bursts; a longer one catches slower password guessing but can also count unrelated mistakes made over time.
maxretry: the failure threshold
maxretry is the number of matching failures allowed during findtime. The example permits five failures before a ban. Password managers, deployment scripts, and users behind a shared NAT can generate legitimate failures, so select a threshold that does not punish normal administration. You can override the global value inside an individual jail when one service needs different treatment.
Step 3: enable and tailor the SSH jail
Why enabled = true matters
Every jail is disabled by default. A section named [sshd] does nothing until it contains enabled = true. The section name must match the jail defined by your installed Fail2ban configuration; a misspelling creates no useful jail.
Port and filter settings
port = ssh refers to the service name used by the system. If SSH listens on a nonstandard port, set the numeric port or service value that your firewall action expects. filter = sshd selects the packaged SSH authentication patterns. Do not invent a filter name: inspect the available filters under your installation’s Fail2ban configuration directory if the jail cannot start.

Per-jail values
You can put stricter or more conservative values in the SSH section. For example:
[sshd]
enabled = true
port = ssh
filter = sshd
maxretry = 3
bantime = 86400
Here, three failures trigger a 24-hour ban. A separate tutorial example uses a five-minute SSH failure window (findtime = 300) together with a 24-hour ban. These tutorials disagree because there is no single safe number for every VPS. A public server used by several administrators may need a higher threshold; a single-operator host with key-only login may tolerate a lower one. Change one variable at a time and monitor the result.
Step 4: fix the “fail2ban ubuntu no log file for sshd” condition
On a systemd host, Fail2ban may report that it cannot find a log file for the SSH jail because authentication messages are stored in the journal instead of /var/log/auth.log. Add the systemd backend inside the SSH section:
[sshd]
enabled = true
port = ssh
filter = sshd
backend = systemd
This tells the jail to read systemd’s journal. Use it only when the installed Fail2ban version supports the backend and the SSH service actually logs there. The alternative described by administrator guides is to install and configure rsyslog so that a traditional authentication log such as /var/log/auth.log is present, then use the file-based backend appropriate to your distribution. Do not point the jail at a path that is absent or not receiving current SSH events.
To establish which source is correct, make one deliberately failed login from a controlled test address, then inspect the system journal or the authentication log your distribution uses. The timestamp and source address should appear in the same place Fail2ban is configured to read.
Step 5: reload Fail2ban and inspect the merged configuration
Save the file and reload the service:
sudo systemctl reload fail2ban
If your service manager does not perform a reload, use the Fail2ban client:

sudo fail2ban-client reload
A successful reload only means the daemon accepted the files; it does not prove that the SSH jail is active or reading events. Run these checks:
sudo fail2ban-client status
sudo fail2ban-client status sshd
fail2ban-client -d
statuslists the jails currently active.status sshdshows the SSH jail’s filter status, currently failed attempts, and currently banned addresses.-ddumps the merged configuration after all override files have been read. Use it to confirm the effectiveignoreip, retry values, backend, port, and action rather than relying on what you intended to type.
Run the client with sudo when your installation requires privileged access. If the status command lists no jails, solve that problem before testing bans.
Understanding a working SSH jail
A healthy jail has four working links:
- The SSH daemon writes authentication failures to a source Fail2ban can read.
- The
sshdfilter recognizes those lines. - The jail counts matches according to
findtimeandmaxretry. - The configured action can install and remove firewall rules for the target address.
If any link fails, the jail may appear enabled while never banning anyone. A rising “currently failed” count without bans points to threshold or timing choices; no failed entries at all points to the log source, filter, or permissions; a ban count with no actual blocking points to the firewall action or a different firewall layer taking precedence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.When the fail2ban sshd jail is not working or not found
The jail does not appear in status
- Confirm the section contains exactly
enabled = true. - Check that the section is named
[sshd], not a misspelled variant. - Review the lines immediately before the section for a syntax error. A malformed earlier setting can cause the rest of
jail.localto be parsed incorrectly or the section to be swallowed. - Use
fail2ban-client -dto see whether the section exists in the merged result.
The jail is present but reports no log file
Use the systemd backend when the host keeps SSH events in the journal, or configure rsyslog and a file-based backend when your operating model requires /var/log/auth.log. Verify that new failed-login events are being written to the selected source; an old, empty file is not evidence that logging works.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The jail counts failures but never blocks an address
- Check whether the testing address is in
ignoreip; trusted addresses are intentionally exempt. - Compare the current count with
maxretryand the elapsed time withfindtime. - Inspect the jail status for the selected action and confirm that your VPS firewall framework supports it.
- Check for another firewall or provider security group that may make the result look different from the rule Fail2ban installed.
An administrator was banned
Use the provider console or an already authenticated recovery session to remove the address from the jail’s ban list, then add the correct stable management address or subnet to ignoreip before reloading. If your public address changes frequently, prefer a controlled VPN or provider console over continually broadening the allow-list.
Optional hardening after the basic jail works
Escalating ban durations
Some Fail2ban versions provide options such as bantime.increment = true, a multiplication factor, and a maximum ban duration. These can make repeat offenders stay blocked longer. They are version-dependent: verify the option names and behavior in the manual on the VPS before adding them, and test how a reload treats existing bans.
Best Value
Choosing an nftables action
Guides for newer systems often show an nftables ban action. Select an action compatible with the firewall framework actually in use on the host. Do not combine actions blindly with an independently managed firewall; duplicate chains or conflicting rule managers can make recovery difficult. Confirm the resulting rule with the firewall’s own inspection tools after a controlled test.
Keep SSH fundamentals in place
Fail2ban is most useful alongside key-based authentication, disabled or restricted password login where operationally possible, timely security updates, a limited SSH source range, and a provider-level firewall. It reacts after failures are logged; it does not prevent the first connection or repair a compromised account.
Testing and ongoing maintenance
Use a controlled test
Test from an address that is not in ignoreip and that you can recover through another path. Generate a small number of failed SSH logins, wait for the configured window, and watch sudo fail2ban-client status sshd. Do not deliberately exceed a very low threshold from your only administrator address. Remove the test ban through the recovery path after confirming that the action works.
Review logs and bans
After deployment, check the SSH jail status and the host’s authentication logs during normal administration. Unexpected bans may indicate a typo in a deployment credential, a shared NAT address, or a compromised account rather than an attacker. Record why an address was unbanned and adjust the relevant credential or allow-list instead of permanently ignoring large networks.
Recheck after upgrades
Package upgrades can change defaults, available filters, backend behavior, or firewall integration. Because your settings live in .local files, they are less likely to be overwritten, but they still need validation. After an upgrade, run fail2ban-client -d, reload the service, and verify the SSH jail status and log source again. The installed man 5 jail.conf is the authority for defaults such as log level, which can differ between releases.
A compact decision checklist
- Can you reach a provider console or a second session if SSH access is blocked?
- Are every administrator address and required management subnet listed narrowly in
ignoreip? - Did you put changes in
/etc/fail2ban/jail.localor another.localoverride rather than editingjail.conf? - Does
[sshd]containenabled = trueand the correct port and filter? - Does the selected backend contain fresh SSH failure events?
- Did a reload complete without syntax errors?
- Does
sudo fail2ban-client status sshdshow the expected jail? - Does
fail2ban-client -dshow the values you intended after all overrides are applied? - Is the firewall action compatible with the firewall already managing the VPS?
Once these checks pass, Fail2ban is actively enforcing the SSH policy you defined rather than merely containing a plausible-looking configuration file.
