On Linux, pen pressure and button behavior pass through several layers, so a tablet can move the pointer correctly while pressure, shortcuts, or monitor mapping still need attention. The right controls depend on your tablet model, distribution, desktop, and whether you are using Wayland or Xorg.
How Linux tablet configuration fits together
Tablet input travels through a stack: the kernel communicates with the hardware, a userspace driver adds behavior, the display server or compositor exposes events, toolkits pass them to applications, and the application must support—and sometimes enable—the feature. A tablet event reaching Linux does not by itself mean that a particular brush or tool is using pressure.

Wacom describes xf86-input-wacom as its optimized Xorg userspace driver and libinput as a helper library commonly used by Wayland compositors. Wacom also notes that most distributions pre-install linuxwacom components and that Linux users should only rarely need to install anything before using a Wacom tablet. That guidance is specific to Wacom devices; support for other models can differ.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify your desktop environment, such as GNOME or KDE Plasma, and whether the current session is Wayland or Xorg.
- Look in the desktop’s tablet settings for display target, orientation, handedness, and button bindings.
- If settings are missing or the tablet needs custom support, check your distribution’s documentation for the model and see whether OpenTabletDriver supports it.
- Change one layer at a time, then test in an application and tool known to support pressure. Avoid configuring the same virtual tablet independently in two layers unless the relevant instructions call for it.
Where to configure a tablet in KDE Plasma
KDE’s Wayland artists guide says Plasma 6 includes a System Settings module named “Drawing Tablet” for settings such as display mapping and button configuration. The Wayland interface has limitations compared with the corresponding X11 interface, and available options can vary by session and release. Use the controls present on your system; if an expected setting is absent, check current KDE documentation for your Plasma version.

How to get pen pressure working
Check pressure in order: the driver’s output or binding mode, then the drawing application’s input settings and selected tool. If the pen moves the pointer but strokes remain uniform, the failure may be at either layer.
OpenTabletDriver: check Artist Mode and the tip binding
If pressure is missing while using OpenTabletDriver, its Linux FAQ directs users to select Artist Mode, clear the tip binding through the advanced binding editor, and save or apply the change. Then test with an application that supports pressure. The FAQ notes that Artist Mode does not support ordinary mouse-button bindings; use Artist Mode pen bindings for those actions.

Check the application and selected tool
Pressure support must be enabled or selected in some applications. Wacom’s examples are specific to the applications it names: in Krita, select a pressure-sensitive brush; in Blender, enable the pressure-sensitivity checkbox; Xournal++ is listed as an example that needs no configuration. Interfaces and behavior can change between versions, so check the current controls in your installed release.
For GIMP 2, the OpenTabletDriver FAQ gives an additional version-specific check: set the relevant tablet input devices to “Screen” mode, disable other listed devices as directed there, and choose a tool that supports pressure. The FAQ cites the Basic Dynamics profile. Check the current GIMP interface before applying those steps to a different version.

What the pressure range means
libinput exposes tablet pressure as a logical value from 0.0 to 1.0. Its documentation explains that adjusting the usable hardware range remaps the endpoints: values below the adjusted minimum become logical zero, and values above the adjusted maximum become logical one. This is a technical range adjustment, not a universal pressure curve or a recommended personal setting.
Configure pen buttons and tablet-pad controls
First distinguish buttons on the stylus from buttons, rings, or strips on the tablet surface. They are separate controls and may be handled differently by the driver or desktop. In libinput, pad button numbers are assigned sequentially starting at zero and do not intrinsically identify a physical location or action. Use device-aware information such as the libwacom database and the desktop’s button mapping rather than assuming that “button 1” corresponds to a particular printed shortcut.

Some pads support modes, allowing the same ring or button to perform different functions in different modes. libinput describes the mechanism, but the desktop or compositor decides what those modes do. Confirm the active mode as well as the binding when a control seems to trigger the wrong action.
NixOS: low-level hotkey remapping
For NixOS users who need lower-level remapping, the NixOS Wiki documents udev hwdb rules. Identify the correct input device and its scan codes first: stylus controls, tablet hotkeys, and keyboard-like controls can appear as separate devices or event IDs. The wiki’s configuration is distribution-specific; do not copy it unchanged to another distribution.

Map the tablet to the correct monitor
A tablet without a built-in display commonly needs its active area associated with the monitor where you draw. If OpenTabletDriver’s virtual tablet is also mapped by the desktop, the two layers can compete and produce pointer jumps, a drawing area that spans multiple monitors, or a pointer landing on the wrong display.
The OpenTabletDriver Linux FAQ describes a workaround for this conflict: set one display-area editor to all screens—or choose “Virtual Display” in OpenTabletDriver—save or apply that setting, and then choose the intended area in the other layer. Some desktop environments may not offer the required all-screen setting. Check which layer is applying each mapping and match the selected display to the tablet’s intended work area.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- Tablet not detected: Check distribution and model support. Wacom notes that outdated drivers or misconfiguration commonly cause recognition problems.
- Pen moves but pressure is missing: Check the driver’s output mode and tip binding, then confirm that the application and selected tool consume pressure.
- Buttons trigger the wrong action: Determine whether the control is on the pen or tablet pad, identify the physical control associated with its event, and check bindings for the active driver mode.
- Pointer jumps or maps across displays unexpectedly: Check for competing mapping in the desktop and OpenTabletDriver before changing the tablet’s active area.
- OpenTabletDriver cannot create a virtual device: Its Linux FAQ says to check kernel uinput support and permissions. The remedy depends on the distribution and local setup, so follow the relevant distribution guidance.
Choose the configuration path that fits your setup
There is no single Linux control panel that guarantees the same settings across tablets and desktops. Compare the available paths by the session you use, whether the exact model is recognized, which controls the desktop exposes, whether pressure and button events reach your chosen application correctly, and whether the setup avoids competing mappings or drivers. KDE Plasma 6, Wacom’s driver stack, and OpenTabletDriver cover different layers rather than interchangeable universal solutions.
