How to Configure Color Management Profiles in Windows 11

Manage color profiles per display in Windows 11: add and set an existing profile, remove one, run calibration, or check for automatic color management.

In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Color profile, select the monitor you want to configure, then add or set a profile, remove one, or start calibration. Adding a profile makes it available; choose Set profile separately to make it the default for that display. The available controls vary with your display and system support.

Choose the display you want to manage

Open Settings > System > Display > Color profile. Use the display selector near the top of the page to choose the monitor you intend to change before adding, setting, or removing a profile. This matters on multi-monitor systems: profile settings are associated with the selected display, not automatically applied to every screen. Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions describe this workflow.

Add an existing profile and make it active

  1. Go to Settings > System > Display > Color profile.
  2. Select the intended display.
  3. Choose Add profile and browse to the profile file you want to add.
  4. After it appears in the list, choose Set profile on that profile to make it the default for the selected display.

Adding and setting are separate actions: a profile that has only been added is available in the list but has not necessarily become the display’s default. Use a profile intended for the exact monitor and check the result in the applications where color accuracy matters. Windows’ settings do not identify a universally best profile for an unspecified monitor.

Remove a profile or create one with calibration

Remove a profile

On the selected display’s Color profile page, expand the profile entry and choose Remove. Confirm that the selected display is the one whose profile you mean to remove.

Run Windows display calibration

Choose Calibrate display on the Color profile page and follow the on-screen steps. Windows creates a profile for the display on which the calibration tool is run. This built-in route does not make a colorimeter a prerequisite for ordinary profile management. For measurement-based calibration, however, a measuring instrument can record the display’s actual output; Microsoft Learn describes calibration as measuring known color values, deriving a correction transform, storing it, and applying it later. Microsoft Learn’s Windows Color System overview explains that technical process.

For an HDR-enabled external display, Microsoft says the calibration flow prompts you to use the Windows HDR Calibration app. Follow that prompt rather than assuming the standard SDR calibration steps are sufficient.

Turn on automatic color management when it is available

On the Color profile page, select the display and look for Automatically manage color for apps. If Windows offers the toggle, turning it on enables automatic color management for supported displays. The option is not available on every Windows 11 PC or display, so its absence does not mean the profile controls are broken.

Microsoft describes this feature as a way to help apps—including apps that are not themselves color-managed—render a wider range of colors with greater precision. Microsoft gives a range of 10–16 bits of precision for the feature; this is not a promise that every display or app will show that precision. On displays limited to 8-bit color, Windows can use techniques such as dithering. Microsoft Support’s feature description provides this qualification.

When profile or app colors do not match expectations

Color differences can involve more than the profile selected in Settings. Microsoft explains that ICC profile behavior changes in non-backward-compatible ways when Advanced Color is active, including HDR and automatic color management scenarios. An application’s own color-management behavior can also affect what you see. When troubleshooting, note whether HDR or automatic color management is enabled, and compare results in the specific apps you use.

Microsoft’s technical overview also describes GPU color-transform capabilities that depend on supported graphics hardware and display drivers. It lists supported GPU generations and a WDDM 2.6-or-later driver for the documented pipeline, while noting that some vendors may require a newer driver. These are conditions for that advanced pipeline—not prerequisites for opening Settings or selecting an ordinary color profile. Microsoft Learn’s technical overview covers the pipeline and ICC behavior.

Choose between adding a profile and calibrating

Route Use it when What it does
Add and set an existing profile You already have a profile intended for the selected monitor. Adds the profile to the display’s list; selecting Set profile makes it the default for that display. Microsoft Support
Calibrate display You want to create a profile through Windows calibration rather than select an existing one. Runs the calibration flow for the display where the tool is used. For HDR-enabled external displays, Microsoft directs users to the Windows HDR Calibration app. Microsoft Support

Neither route is automatically the right choice for every monitor. The appropriate profile depends on the display and intended workflow; calibration hardware is optional for the basic Settings steps, but is relevant when you want measurement-based correction.
