It is an architecture and set of controls that your team must configure: Cloudflare Access applies identity- and context-based policies to applications, while Gateway and the Cloudflare One Client can extend filtering and device checks to user traffic. The design succeeds when those controls match your identity, endpoint, application, and network requirements—and when you test who can and cannot get through.
How Cloudflare Zero Trust fits into an enterprise security architecture
Cloudflare describes Cloudflare One as a SASE platform that brings enterprise networking and security products together through a control plane. Its Zero Trust approach centers on least privilege: authenticate and authorize each request using identity and context rather than assuming that a user or device is trustworthy because it is inside a network.

Within that architecture, the main components have distinct jobs:
- Access decides who can reach an application by evaluating policies for that application.
- Gateway filters and inspects DNS, network, HTTP, and egress traffic according to the controls enabled in the organization.
- Cloudflare One Client connects an endpoint to the organization’s Cloudflare controls. It was formerly called WARP; the selected client mode determines which traffic and endpoint controls are available.
- Identity providers (IdPs) supply identity and, where configured and supported, group or authentication-method information for policy decisions.
- Device posture checks add endpoint context to decisions, such as whether a request comes from a device using the organization-enrolled client and its Gateway configuration.
These parts are related, but they are not interchangeable. An Access policy can limit application reachability without providing broad web-traffic inspection. Gateway filtering does not by itself define which users may enter every application. The client provides an endpoint path to controls, but its mode and configuration determine what the organization can enforce.

Choose the application type before writing Access policies
Cloudflare Access supports self-hosted, SaaS, and infrastructure applications, as well as bookmarks. Choose the type according to what is being protected and what authorization or session behavior is needed; do not assume every application has the same control boundary.
Self-hosted applications
Use this category when protecting applications your organization operates. Define the application boundary and the users or groups that should reach it, then make Access policy decisions as narrow as the business requirement allows.
SaaS applications
Access can apply policies at initial sign-on and when reissuing a SaaS session. Once a user has authenticated to the SaaS service, however, session management is controlled by that service. Account for the SaaS provider’s own session lifetime, revocation, and authorization behavior rather than treating Access as the manager of every action in an established session.

Infrastructure applications
Use this category for infrastructure access cases, and verify which authentication flow and controls apply to the specific resource. Cloudflare documents PIV and FIDO2 security keys for SSH infrastructure applications; those methods are distinct from browser-based WebAuthn security keys used for independent MFA.
Bookmarks
Bookmarks provide a way to present application links within the Access experience. A bookmark is not a substitute for securing the destination: the target application still needs the appropriate access controls.

Build Access policies around least privilege
Cloudflare’s policy model uses an action—Allow, Block, Bypass, or Service Auth—along with rule types (Include, Require, and Exclude), selectors, and values. Selectors can refer to attributes such as an email address, an IdP group, authentication method, Gateway status, or device posture. Cloudflare states that Access determines who can reach an application by applying the policies configured for it.
Start from the users who need access, not from a broad population that you later try to exclude. For example, an application used by one engineering team might use an Include rule for the intended IdP group, a Require condition for an approved authentication method, and a device condition appropriate to the application’s risk. Exclude rules can remove specified users or circumstances from eligibility. The exact selectors available depend on the identity and device signals configured in your environment.

Policy order can change the result of evaluation. Review the ordered policies for each application, especially when adding a new Allow, Block, or Bypass rule. Cloudflare warns that overly broad Include rules can allow everyone or all valid email login methods. A rule that looks convenient during setup may therefore widen access beyond the intended group.
Do not treat an example policy as a complete security baseline. Document the intended audience and conditions for each policy, then test both positive and negative cases: an authorized user with the expected signals should reach the application, while an unauthorized user, a user outside the selected group, and a device that fails a required condition should not. Also test boundary cases such as missing group claims or an unavailable posture signal so the response is understood before production rollout.
Select a Cloudflare One Client mode that matches the controls you need
Client modes determine what traffic and endpoint checks are available. Choose against required coverage, existing DNS architecture, and the organization’s ability to deploy and manage the client; no mode is universally correct.

| Mode | What it supports | Key limitation or fit |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic and DNS | Routes device traffic and supports DNS, network, and HTTP filtering, identity-based policies, and posture checks. | Use when the design needs broader filtering and posture capabilities, subject to endpoint deployment and traffic-routing requirements. |
| DNS-only | Filters DNS queries. | It does not inspect HTTP traffic or enforce device posture checks. |
| Traffic-only, local proxy filtering, and posture-only | Cloudflare documents these as additional modes for narrower use cases. | Evaluate the specific control need before selecting one; they are not equivalent to the broader traffic-and-DNS mode. |
Cloudflare’s setup guidance calls for creating a Zero Trust organization, choosing a login method—One-time PIN or a third-party identity provider—and configuring the client. The team name is required for many features, including HTTP policies, Browser Isolation, and device posture. Cloudflare’s deployment-parameter guidance also notes that local device settings can take precedence over dashboard settings. Include MDM precedence and configuration drift in rollout planning, and verify the effective configuration on pilot devices rather than assuming dashboard values always win.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDecide whether HTTPS inspection is appropriate
Gateway can inspect and filter DNS, network, HTTP, and egress traffic. HTTPS inspection requires a Cloudflare root certificate on each client device so the service can decrypt TLS traffic. The Cloudflare One Client can install the certificate on supported devices. Where certificate installation is unsupported or undesirable, administrators can create Do Not Inspect exemptions.
This is an enterprise design decision, not just a toggle. Before enabling inspection, establish how certificates will be distributed and renewed, assess application compatibility, decide who can approve exceptions, and communicate clearly about the traffic that may be inspected. Maintain an exception process so exclusions are deliberate, scoped, and reviewed rather than an informal way to resolve every compatibility complaint.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use identity and MFA signals deliberately
Access can use identity-provider signals, including groups for supported IdPs or providers that provision groups through SCIM. Group-based policies are only as reliable as the group data and claims reaching Access. Confirm the groups actually appear as expected and test how policy evaluation behaves when a claim is absent or stale.
Enforce MFA through the IdP or Access
MFA can be required based on an authentication method reported by the IdP, or enforced independently in Access. The IdP route depends on the provider reporting authentication-method information; validate the claims and resulting policy behavior in the deployed configuration rather than assuming a successful IdP login proves a particular MFA method was used.

Cloudflare’s independent MFA documentation lists authenticator applications, WebAuthn security keys, and device biometrics. A WebAuthn-compatible hardware security key can be an option for browser-based independent MFA, but Cloudflare does not require a particular model. PIV and FIDO2 keys are documented for SSH infrastructure applications only; do not assume those SSH methods work as browser-based WebAuthn credentials in every flow.
Distinguish organization-enrolled devices from any WARP connection
Cloudflare documents a Require Gateway check that verifies requests come from devices running the organization-enrolled client whose traffic is filtered by the organization’s Gateway configuration. This is more specific for company-owned assets than Require WARP, which can also match consumer WARP. Choose the check that matches the trust condition you intend to enforce; the presence of a client alone is not necessarily evidence that the device is enrolled in, and governed by, your organization’s controls.
Plan rollout, exceptions, and account operations
Roll out the design in stages. First establish the organization and login method, then configure a pilot client deployment and verify the effective settings on real managed endpoints. Add application policies and posture requirements in a test group before expanding them. For each stage, record the intended outcome, the failure behavior, and the owner who can approve a narrowly scoped exception.
- Identity: confirm login methods, group claims, and any authentication-method signal relied on by policy.
- Endpoints: confirm enrollment, client mode, team name, local-versus-dashboard setting precedence, and posture signal availability.
- Applications: test permitted and denied users, policy order, and the session boundary for SaaS applications.
- Inspection: verify certificate deployment and application compatibility, and track Do Not Inspect exceptions.
- Operations: define how to investigate access failures, revoke authentication, and review policy changes.
Cloudflare’s getting-started FAQ says Zero Trust subscriptions consume seats when users authenticate to applications or enroll the client. Removing a user seat and revoking authentication are separate operations: removing a seat alone does not permanently prevent future authentication. Treat subscription entitlements and pricing as changeable, and check the current Cloudflare account and plans information when budgeting; a fixed price is not established here.
Evaluate the design against your existing environment
Before deployment, assess the fit across the systems that must cooperate. The critical questions are whether each application’s session model suits Access, which client mode provides the needed traffic coverage, whether the IdP supplies dependable group and MFA signals, how managed and unmanaged devices should be treated, how broadly HTTPS inspection can be deployed, and whether endpoint management can enforce consistent configuration.
Cloudflare’s platform description and feature documentation explain the available controls, but they do not establish a universal security outcome, breach reduction, latency impact, or cost saving. Evaluate those outcomes in your own environment and keep the distinction clear between controls you have configured and security results you have measured.
