Plan language and script coverage before capturing
“Indian language” is not a single rendering case. A language and a script do not have a one-to-one relationship: one script can serve multiple languages, and one language can be written in multiple scripts. The W3C’s Indic Layout Requirements Working Draft (May 29, 2020) reports 22 constitutionally recognized languages and 12 scripts in India. That figure is the document’s description, not a current census estimate; the draft focuses largely on Devanagari and is not exhaustive layout guidance for every script.

Build the screenshot matrix from the combinations your product actually supports. You usually do not need every page in every locale: choose representative states likely to expose layout or shaping problems.

Set up the Playwright integration
Argos documents a Playwright workflow using its CLI, the @argos-ci/playwright package, a reporter in Playwright configuration, and an argosScreenshot call in a browser test. Its guide also shows a GitHub Actions workflow, but the exact CI setup depends on how your repository runs tests. Treat the snippet below as the capture pattern, not a complete universal reporter or upload configuration; confirm current options in the official guide and Playwright SDK documentation.

Keep reporter and upload behavior aligned with your CI branches, pull requests, retries, and shards; do not assume one provider’s configuration applies to all.

Make Indic font rendering deterministic
Wait for the font actually used by the page, not merely for navigation to finish. A late web font can change text width and line breaks after an initial capture. Indic scripts also depend on font shaping support: Unicode describes script-specific behavior including glyph substitution and positioning, and its Indic Scripts and Languages FAQ lists Noto fonts and examples such as Mangal, Nirmala UI, Latha, Raavi, Shruti, and Tunga. These are examples, not guaranteed defaults on every CI operating system. Confirm that the font asset is present, loaded, and covers the script under test.
Unicode Standard 18.0.0 describes Indic scripts as abugidas and explains that the virama is a combining character whose form varies by script; see Chapter 12, “South and Central Asia-I”. A fallback font can therefore produce more than a cosmetic difference: glyph forms, shaping, line breaks, and the height of surrounding components may all change.
Argos’s stabilization guidance says its screenshot helper waits for resources such as fonts and images. Still verify readiness in the context of your app, particularly if fonts are injected late or the page has its own asynchronous loading behavior. Do not use letter spacing as a blanket fix for Indic text; inspect representative strings with a supported font and make script-appropriate CSS changes only when needed.

Stabilize the page before taking a screenshot
Argos’s guide to stabilizing visual tests describes waiting for resources, network idle, and removal of [aria-busy] loading states. Its guidance also covers stable test data and animation. These checks reduce common sources of noise, but the helper cannot know every application-specific ready condition.

Use explicit waits where your application needs them. Mask only genuinely irrelevant changing regions, and preserve the dimensions and layout of the content being compared. Standardize the CI browser and operating environment: different machine, browser, or operating-system rendering can introduce noise, so compare like with like.
Configure locale variants for the runner you use
Locale selection belongs to the test setup. In Playwright, visit a localized URL, set the application’s locale state, or load the relevant test data using the site’s own mechanisms; the Argos capture call records the resulting state rather than providing a universal locale switch. Make the locale explicit in screenshot names so reviewers can distinguish variants.

Use that Storybook-specific approach only when it matches your setup; do not assume it configures a Playwright application automatically.
Read diffs as visual evidence, not language review
A visual diff can expose changed glyphs, unexpected fallback fonts, clipped text, or altered wrapping. It cannot establish that translated content is correct or that a shaping result is linguistically appropriate. Have someone familiar with the language review text, punctuation, shaping, and line breaks, especially when changing fonts or layout rules. Keep screenshot baselines and environments consistent so genuine product changes are easier to separate from rendering variation.
