The usual defaults are 7777/UDP for game traffic, 27015/UDP for Steam query and master-list traffic, 8080/TCP for WebAdmin, and 20560/UDP for Steam traffic. A server can start normally yet remain invisible to internet players if forwarding, firewall rules, or query settings are wrong.
What you need before installing
A dedicated server is a separate installation from the copy of Killing Floor 2 used to play. Install it in its own directory so updates, configuration changes, logs, and backups do not interfere with your client files.

- A Windows or Linux machine that can remain online while players connect.
- SteamCMD installed separately from the normal Steam desktop client.
- Administrator access to the operating system.
- Access to the router that receives your public internet connection, unless the server is in a cloud or managed hosting environment.
- A stable private IP address for the server, such as a DHCP reservation, so forwarding rules do not break after a reboot.
- A backup location for the complete server directory and edited configuration files.
The exact current Steam application ID and canonical official download command should be checked against current Tripwire or Valve documentation before installation. Those values can change or be documented differently over time, so do not copy an old command from an unmaintained guide solely because it still appears in a search result.

Create a separate server directory
Choose a directory that is easy to back up and that the account running the server can read and write. For example, use C:KF2Server on Windows or /opt/kf2-server on Linux. Do not install into the ordinary game directory under your personal Steam library.
#1 Best Overall
Download SteamCMD from Valve’s current documentation, extract it, and start it from a command prompt or shell. The installation guides commonly use anonymous access when the dedicated-server files permit it.
Authenticate and download
- Open a command prompt or terminal in the SteamCMD directory.
- Start SteamCMD.
- At the SteamCMD prompt, enter
login anonymouswhen anonymous access is accepted. - Set the installation directory to your dedicated-server directory.
- Run the current official server-app update command for Killing Floor 2, using the app ID and syntax published by Tripwire or Valve at the time you install.
- Wait for SteamCMD to report that the files have completed downloading, then exit SteamCMD.
Keep the SteamCMD session output if the download fails. Messages about an invalid app ID, unavailable anonymous access, or a missing depot identify an installation problem before any network troubleshooting is necessary.
Back up the clean installation
Before editing anything, stop the server and make a copy of the newly downloaded directory. A clean copy gives you a recovery point if an INI edit prevents startup or an update overwrites a setting. Back up configuration separately as well, because it is easier to compare a changed file with the original than to reconstruct it from memory.
Launch a server on Windows
Use the supplied launcher
After SteamCMD finishes, use the batch file or launcher supplied with the server distribution. Start it from an elevated command prompt if Windows permissions require that, and keep the console visible during the first launch so you can read map, port, and configuration errors.
The Windows server configuration is normally under the server directory at KFGameConfigPCServer-KFGame.ini. A Windows Steam Community guide lists this file and the standard ports; that guide was updated in 2024, but local files should take precedence if a later server build uses a different layout.
Run it as a service only after testing
First prove that the supplied launcher starts a working server interactively. Once local and remote connections succeed, you can create a Windows service, scheduled task, or other automatic-start arrangement. Configure the service to restart after an unexpected process exit, but avoid creating an automatic restart loop while the INI file still contains errors.

Launch a server on Linux
Run SteamCMD and a startup script
On Linux, install the server into a dedicated directory and use SteamCMD to update it. Start the game server with a shell script, a systemd service, or a game-server manager such as LinuxGSM. A script or service makes it easier to pass the same launch options on every restart and to capture logs consistently.

LinuxGSM documentation identifies UDP 7777 as the default game port. A current hosting guide uses KFGame/Config/LinuxServer-KFGame.ini for server settings, while LinuxGSM documentation references KFGame/Config/LinuxServer-KFEngine.ini when describing the default game-port configuration. Both files may exist in a deployment. Inspect the files shipped with your build and change the setting in the file that controls the relevant option rather than creating a new, similarly named file.
Use a service manager for automatic restarts
After confirming an interactive launch, create a systemd unit or LinuxGSM service that runs under a dedicated, non-root account. Give that account ownership of the server directory and the log directory. Configure the service to start after networking is available and to stop cleanly so game state and logs are not left in an inconsistent condition.
Do not run the game server as root merely to avoid a file-permission error. Correct the ownership and permissions of the installation instead, then test the service again.
Configure the server identity and gameplay
Use the platform-specific files under KFGame/Config for identity and gameplay settings. On Windows, the commonly used file is PCServer-KFGame.ini. Linux deployments use Linux-named configuration files, with the exact file depending on the server build and the setting being changed.
Set the name and message of the day
Change the server-name, short-name, and MOTD fields supplied in the configuration file. Keep punctuation and quotation marks in the format already shown by the file. A malformed quote or an accidental deletion of a section header can prevent the server from loading its settings.
Rank #3
Choose difficulty and game mode
Set the difficulty and game-mode fields in the same configuration file. Use the values and spelling shown in the comments or defaults shipped with your build rather than inventing labels. If a setting appears in more than one section, change the instance used by the active server profile and then verify the startup log.
Restart after every configuration change
Stop the server, edit the file, save it, and start the server again. Many settings are read only during startup. If the process remains running after an edit, players may continue using the old values and you may incorrectly conclude that the setting is unsupported.
Open and forward the required ports
The following values are the commonly documented defaults. They are defaults, not immutable requirements: if a launch option or configuration file changes a port, use the active value everywhere else.

| Port | Protocol | Purpose | Where it must be allowed |
|---|---|---|---|
7777 |
UDP | Main game and server traffic | Operating-system or cloud firewall and internet-facing router |
27015 |
UDP | Steam query and master-list traffic | Operating-system or cloud firewall and internet-facing router |
8080 |
TCP | Optional WebAdmin interface | Only when WebAdmin is enabled; restrict exposure whenever possible |
20560 |
UDP | Steam traffic | Operating-system or cloud firewall and internet-facing router |
The four values above are listed together in a Windows Steam Community guide updated in 2024. LinuxGSM and a current hosting guide confirm the principal game, query, and WebAdmin ports. If your launch command reports a different game or query port, that reported value is the one your firewall and router must use.
Assign a stable private address
Give the server a fixed address on the local network, either by configuring a static address correctly or by creating a DHCP reservation in the router. Forwarding to an address that changes after a reboot is a common reason a previously working server disappears.
Create router forwarding rules
- Open the router’s administration interface.
- Create a rule forwarding UDP
7777to the server’s stable private address. - Create a rule forwarding UDP
27015to the same address. - Add UDP
20560if your deployment uses the documented Steam-traffic default. - Add TCP
8080only if you enabled WebAdmin and intend to reach it from outside the LAN. - Save the rules and confirm that the router did not silently convert a UDP rule to TCP or apply it to the wrong internal host.
Some routers distinguish between internal and external port numbers. Use the same number on both sides unless you deliberately choose a different external port and understand how the server and administrators will connect.

Allow the same ports through the host firewall
Router forwarding does not override the firewall on Windows or Linux. Create inbound rules for the active game and query ports, and for the Steam port if used. Permit TCP 8080 only for WebAdmin and preferably restrict its source addresses to your administration network. In a cloud deployment, make the equivalent changes in the provider’s security group or network firewall.
Enable WebAdmin carefully
WebAdmin is optional. It provides browser-based administration and is commonly bound to TCP 8080. Enable it in the server configuration only when browser administration is worth the additional attack surface.
- Set a long, unique administrator password before exposing the interface.
- Prefer a firewall rule that permits only your own management network or VPN.
- Do not publish WebAdmin to the entire internet merely because the game server is public.
- Change the external port only as a minor obfuscation measure; access control and a strong password are still required.
- After enabling it, test login from an allowed network and confirm that an unauthorized network is blocked.
The hosting documentation includes WebAdmin setup, while the Windows guide identifies TCP 8080. If you do not need browser administration, leave the service disabled and keep the port closed.
Start, update, and maintain the server
Use a repeatable startup procedure
- Stop any existing server process.
- Back up the current configuration and important logs.
- Run SteamCMD and apply the current server update procedure.
- Review changed configuration files before accepting an update that may have introduced new defaults.
- Start the Windows launcher, Linux script, systemd service, or LinuxGSM instance.
- Watch the console or log until the server reports that it is listening and has finished loading its map and configuration.
Do not update while players are in a match unless you have accepted the interruption. Schedule maintenance during a quiet period and keep a known-good backup so you can roll back a problematic update.
Back up what matters
At minimum, preserve the complete KFGame/Config directory, your launcher or service definition, and the logs from a successful startup. Label backups with the date and server version. A full directory backup is useful when you need to restore custom settings after a clean reinstall.
Test the server from the right network
Test on the same LAN first
Connect from another device on the same local network. This test checks whether the server process, game mode, configuration, and local firewall are working without involving internet routing. If a LAN connection fails, fix the server or host firewall before changing router rules.

Test from outside the network
Next, use a mobile connection, a remote player, or another external network. Ask the remote player to search for the server and join it. Testing from inside the same LAN can produce misleading results because some routers do not support hairpin NAT.
Check the process and listening sockets
If the process is running but the server is absent from the browser, verify the following in order:
- The server is listening on the expected interface, not only on loopback.
- The active game port matches the forwarded UDP port.
- The query or master-list port is open and forwarded.
- The host firewall or cloud security group allows inbound traffic.
- The router forwards to the current private IP address.
- The server has completed startup rather than stopping after an INI or map error.
A server that is visible but refuses joins usually points to a different problem than one that never appears in the browser. Check the game-port rule and server log for the former; check query, forwarding, and firewall rules for the latter.

Choose the platform you can monitor and recover confidently. A familiar operating system with reliable backups is usually a better choice than a theoretically leaner platform that nobody on the team can administer.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the machine, router, files, firewall, backups, and WebAdmin exposure. It is suitable when you control the network and can keep the host online. It also means you are responsible for port forwarding, operating-system maintenance, recovery after power or network failures, and the server’s geographic location.
Managed game-server hosting is practical when your internet connection does not allow inbound forwarding, you need 24/7 availability without maintaining a home machine, or you want a control panel and provider-managed network. Compare providers by monthly cost, location and latency, backup policy, update controls, access to configuration files, WebAdmin support, player limits, and whether you receive a dedicated address. Current provider pricing, geography, and promotional terms are not established here, so verify them directly before committing.
For managed Killing Floor 2 game-server hosting instead of maintaining the machine yourself, Godlike.Host provides a game panel and 24/7/365 support by live chat or ticket. Its Killing Floor 2 plans list 10, 20 and 30 slots; Survival is a 6-player mode and Versus Survival an up-to-12-player mode (Tripwire’s Killing Floor 2 wiki, archived 11 Jul 2026).

Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server does not start
- Run the supplied launcher from a visible terminal so the error remains on screen.
- Confirm that SteamCMD completed the download and that the executable and configuration directories exist.
- Restore the last known-good INI backup, then reapply one change at a time.
- Check file ownership and permissions on Linux, especially when switching from an interactive shell to a service account.
- Confirm that no other process already occupies the configured port.
The server starts but does not appear online
- Verify UDP
7777and UDP27015in the host firewall and router. - Confirm that the router forwards to the current private IP address.
- Check whether the server is bound only to a local interface.
- Review the startup log for a port override or query-service error.
- Test from an external network rather than relying on a same-LAN browser result.
Players see the server but cannot join
- Confirm that the game port is the same in the launch configuration, firewall, and forwarding rule.
- Check whether a cloud security group or second firewall is blocking UDP traffic.
- Restart after changing the INI file so the server actually loads the new values.
- Compare the map, mode, and difficulty settings with the values displayed in the server log.
WebAdmin cannot be reached
- Confirm that WebAdmin is enabled and that the server restarted after the change.
- Allow TCP
8080in the host firewall and, if required, the router. - Use the server’s reachable address and configured port, not an address bound only to localhost.
- Check that your source network is included in any restrictive firewall rule.
- Close the port again if WebAdmin is not needed.
Configuration checklist
- SteamCMD and the dedicated files are installed outside the normal player installation.
- The Windows or Linux launcher starts successfully from the server directory.
- The active file under
KFGame/Configcontains the intended name, MOTD, difficulty, and mode. - The server has a stable private IP address.
- UDP
7777, UDP27015, and UDP20560are allowed wherever the deployment requires them. - TCP
8080is open only when WebAdmin is enabled and secured. - Router forwarding points to the correct host and matches the active port values.
- A LAN test succeeds before an external test is attempted.
- Configuration, service definitions, and successful logs are backed up.
