Decide what kind of server you need
The setup is the same in broad terms whether the files run on a computer at home, a rented game-server machine, or a virtual private server. The practical differences are uptime, upload bandwidth, exposure to the internet, and how much network troubleshooting you must do yourself.

For a private session with friends on the same network, a LAN server is the least complicated option. For an internet-facing community server, plan for a stable public address, a GSLT, and a firewall policy before installing anything.
What you need before installation
- A Windows or Linux machine on which you can install and run SteamCMD.
- Enough free disk space for the server files. Community installation guides describe an installation of roughly 60 GB, so reserve more than that rather than filling the disk to its limit.
- Administrator or root access for installation and firewall changes.
- A network path that permits inbound UDP traffic and outbound HTTPS connections to Steam services.
- A Steam account that can create a game-server login token for app ID 730 if the server will be listed publicly.
The server does not need the full playable client installed on the same machine. Keep the dedicated-server directory separate from personal game files so that updates, permissions, and backups are easier to manage.

Install the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD
SteamCMD is Valve’s command-line installer for dedicated servers. The important identifiers for Counter-Strike 2 are an anonymous login and app ID 730.
Use an installation directory
Create a directory with sufficient space and make it the destination for the server files. On Linux, choose a path owned by the account that will run the server; on Windows, avoid a protected system directory if the server process will run without elevation.
Run the SteamCMD update
Start SteamCMD and execute the equivalent of these commands:
login anonymous
app_update 730 validate
quitThe validate step checks the downloaded files and replaces missing or damaged content. Run the update from the directory you selected, or configure SteamCMD’s installation directory before issuing app_update so the files do not land in an unintended location.
Confirm the download completed
Do not create tokens or troubleshoot networking until SteamCMD reports a completed update. If validation repeatedly downloads the same large files, check free disk space, filesystem permissions, and whether security software is locking files in the server directory.

Create a Game Server Login Token
A GSLT identifies a server to Steam. Generate one for app ID 730 through Steam’s game-server account management page. Each server needs its own token, and the token must remain private.
When the token is required
The Valve developer-wiki guidance treats a GSLT as mandatory for public server-browser visibility. Without a token, the process can still serve a LAN or direct-IP game, but it should not be expected to appear in the public browser.
Protect and replace the token
- Store the token outside screenshots, public configuration repositories, and chat messages.
- Put it in the launch configuration only on the machine that runs the server.
- If it is exposed, revoke or replace it from the same game-server account management page and restart the server with the replacement.
- Do not reuse one token across multiple independent servers; issue a separate token for each server.
Build the launch command
Start the dedicated-server executable from the directory containing the installed files. The essential options are shown below.

cs2.exe -dedicated +sv_setsteamaccount <token> +exec server.cfg +map de_dust2 +hostname CS2-Community-ServerReplace the encoded token marker with the real value; do not leave angle brackets in the command. If you are running a private LAN server, omit the token argument rather than inventing one.
Create and load server.cfg
Place a file named exactly server.cfg in the server’s configuration directory, then keep +exec server.cfg in the launch line. The filename and extension must match exactly, including capitalization on filesystems that distinguish it.
Keep configuration responsibilities separate
- Use the launch line for process-level choices such as
-dedicated, the token, the initial map, and tick-rate selection. - Use
server.cfgfor server rules and other console variables that should be applied each time the process starts. - Keep one authoritative copy of the file in version control or a dated backup directory, but never publish the file if it contains a token.
The exact console-variable set for competitive, deathmatch, retakes, and other presets changes with the game build and was not established in the available documentation. Use Valve’s current configuration reference for the cvars appropriate to your selected mode instead of copying an old list from an unverified guide. An empty or malformed file should not prevent the server from starting, but it will leave the server with its defaults.
Choose a tick-rate setting carefully
Current setup guidance describes 64 tick as the default. To request 128 tick, add -tickrate 128 to the launch command and apply the matching update-rate settings in server.cfg. The flag alone is not a substitute for a coherent configuration.

Configure the firewall, router, and NAT
Allow player traffic
Open UDP port 27015 for player traffic on the host firewall and, when the machine is behind a home router, forward that UDP port from the router to the server’s private IP address. Use a reserved or static local address so the forwarding rule does not break after a DHCP lease changes.
Allow Steam connectivity
Permit outbound HTTPS connections to Steam. A server may start locally yet fail to authenticate, update, or register correctly when outbound traffic is blocked.

Understand NAT limitations
Clients outside your local network can fail to connect when the router uses restrictive NAT, when two routers are chained, or when the internet provider places the connection behind carrier-grade NAT. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, rather than relying only on a connection from the same LAN.
Do not expose unrelated administrative ports. Forward only the game traffic you need, keep the operating system patched, and restrict remote administration to a separate, authenticated management path.

- Start locally. Run the launch command and watch the console for an ordinary startup sequence rather than a client window. If the game client appears, the
-dedicatedflag is missing or was placed incorrectly. - Check the configuration load. Confirm that the process reads
server.cfgand reaches the map specified by+map. A typo in+exec server.cfgor the filename commonly leaves the server running with defaults. - Test on the same network. Connect from another device on the LAN using the host’s private address. This separates game configuration problems from internet routing problems.
- Test from outside the LAN. Use a separate connection and the public address after the UDP forwarding rule is active. A successful LAN test does not prove that NAT or the public firewall is correct.
- Check public listing last. For a public server, verify the GSLT, outbound HTTPS access, inbound UDP access, and the server’s ability to reach Steam. A missing token can explain why direct-IP play works while the public browser does not show the server.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The server launches the game client
Add -dedicated to the executable’s launch arguments and restart. Check the actual shortcut, batch file, or service definition; editing a different copy of the command has no effect.
The server starts but is not listed publicly
Confirm that a GSLT was created for app ID 730, that the token is passed with +sv_setsteamaccount, and that the token has not been revoked or exposed. Then verify outbound HTTPS and inbound UDP 27015. Public listing is a separate requirement from the process merely running.

Check the host firewall first, then the router’s UDP 27015 forwarding rule and the server’s private address. Test from outside the LAN. If the internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT or a second router, ordinary port forwarding may not be sufficient; a publicly reachable host may be required.
The configuration appears to be ignored
Verify the file is named server.cfg, is in the expected configuration directory, and is explicitly loaded with +exec server.cfg. Remove syntax errors and restart after every change so you can identify which edit altered the behavior.
128 tick does not take effect
Confirm that -tickrate 128 is present in the command that actually starts the process and that the related update-rate settings in server.cfg agree with it. Stop and restart the server after changes; changing a file while the process is running does not retroactively change its launch parameters.
SteamCMD validation fails
Recheck the installation directory permissions, available disk space, and outbound HTTPS access. Run app_update 730 validate again after correcting the underlying problem rather than deleting the entire installation immediately.
Operate the server safely
- Run the process under a dedicated, non-administrator operating-system account where practical.
- Back up
server.cfgand your launch configuration before updates. - Keep the GSLT out of backups that are uploaded to public storage.
- Record which launch options and configuration revision are active so a restart reproduces the same server.
- Stop the process cleanly before updating files, then start it again and repeat the LAN and external connection checks.
- Monitor available disk space because the initial installation is large and updates can require temporary working space.
Use a practical rollout checklist
- Choose home hosting, a rented game server, or a VPS based on your uptime and network requirements.
- Reserve more than the roughly 60 GB installation estimate and create a dedicated server directory.
- Install with SteamCMD using anonymous login and
app_update 730 validate. - Create one private GSLT for app ID 730 if the server must be public.
- Create
server.cfgand add+exec server.cfgto the startup command. - Start the executable with
-dedicated; add the token, map, hostname, and player-capacity options you need. - Add
-tickrate 128only when you also have matching update-rate settings; otherwise use the reported 64-tick default. - Allow outbound HTTPS and inbound UDP 27015, then configure router forwarding when the host is behind NAT.
- Test locally, test from an external network, and check public listing only after direct connectivity works.
- Document the working command, back up the configuration, and keep the token private.
The Bottom Line
The reliable configuration path is SteamCMD app 730, a private GSLT for public visibility, a launch command containing -dedicated and +exec server.cfg, and correct UDP 27015 and HTTPS network access. Validate each layer locally before diagnosing public listing or internet connectivity.
