Set up a DualShock 4
Windows
The RPCS3 Wiki says Windows users can use a DualShock 4 through HIDAPI over USB or Bluetooth with RPCS3’s dedicated handler and no additional setup steps. If RPCS3 does not detect it, temporarily disable tools such as DS4Windows or ScpToolkit: the guide warns these can interfere with native detection. Linux
Linux access may require udev rules for the controller’s USB or Bluetooth identifiers. Follow the RPCS3 guide’s current instructions for your controller and distribution, then reload the rules or restart as directed and reconnect the controller. Because this changes device permissions, do not copy a shortened rule from an old third-party tutorial.

Set up an Xbox or XInput-compatible controller
Choose the XInput handler and the detected Xbox or XInput-compatible device when those options appear in your RPCS3 build. Test the controls, adjust any incorrect mappings, and save. There are important feature differences: the RPCS3 Wiki says Xbox/XInput controllers do not provide PS3 motion controls or pressure-sensitive buttons, and their printed button labels differ from the PlayStation symbols used in many games. If a game relies on motion or pressure input, check its requirements rather than assuming a standard Xbox pad can supply those features. Troubleshoot common controller problems
- The controller appears connected but does nothing: Confirm the selected handler and device, test the inputs, fix mappings if necessary, and save again.
- DualShock 4 is missing on Windows: Try RPCS3’s dedicated handler and disable DS4Windows or ScpToolkit temporarily to check for interference.
- DualShock 4 is inaccessible on Linux: Follow the current udev instructions for your controller, reload rules or restart as directed, and reconnect it.
- A game needs motion or pressure input: A standard Xbox/XInput controller does not supply those features. Check the game’s requirements; GamePad Test homebrew can help visualize supported input data.
