To reduce data used by each listener, they must select a lower playback quality if YouTube offers one on their device. Those are separate data paths: the broadcaster uploads one encoded feed; each viewer downloads playback, which can vary by quality and device.
Choose a low-data format for the devotional stream
Start with resolution and bitrate
For an audio-led program using a still devotional image or simple, low-motion visual, test a conservative video resolution rather than sending detail and motion viewers may not need. YouTube’s live encoder settings list H.264 at 480p/30fps with a minimum bitrate of 0.4 Mbps and a recommended bitrate of 4 Mbps. For 360p/30fps, the listed minimum and recommended values are also 0.4 Mbps and 4 Mbps.

These are encoder settings, not promises about what every viewer will receive or consume. The large gap between the listed minimum and recommended values means you should test both stability and acceptable picture quality instead of assuming the minimum will look good or that the recommendation is mandatory for every use case. In particular, check whether any on-screen text remains legible on a phone.
Set compatible video and audio options
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, CBR as the bitrate mode, and AAC or MP3 as audio codecs. Its advanced settings specify 128 Kbps stereo audio. Confirm that your encoder and YouTube ingest accept the options you choose. The cited guidance does not establish a lower official audio-bitrate recommendation for this use case.

A still image or simple visual is a production choice to test for an audio-led devotional stream, not an official YouTube low-data preset. The cited guidance does not establish an audio-only live mode, so do not plan on one or promise viewers an audio-only option.
Fit the stream to the broadcaster’s upload connection
The selected stream’s total bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth; download speed is not the relevant figure. YouTube’s streaming tips say: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” YouTube also notes that other people using a shared connection can reduce the capacity available to the encoder and that connectivity disruptions can break a stream.

- Measure outbound bandwidth at the actual streaming location, ideally during the hours the devotional stream will run. Do not assume an India-wide upload speed: the available capacity depends on your location, connection, and usage.
- Add the chosen video and audio bitrates to estimate the stream’s total bitrate.
- Check that the measured upload capacity can handle that total while leaving the recommended 20% headroom. Account for other people and devices sharing the connection.
- Run a test stream and inspect both the encoder preview and playback on a viewer’s mobile device. If the feed is unstable, reduce the video bitrate or resolution and test again.
This procedure applies YouTube’s bandwidth guidance; a speed-test result alone cannot guarantee a 24/7 connection. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption could break the stream.
Commission the setup for continuous streaming
Before relying on an always-on schedule, test the entire chain: encoder, audio, video, network, and viewer playback. YouTube recommends previewing before starting, checking that the stream is accessible on mobile, and monitoring audio and video. If you have a backup encoder, test it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, as YouTube suggests for checking backup readiness.

Plan separately for local power and network failures. A UPS may keep local encoder, router, or audio equipment powered briefly, but it does not reduce data use or fix an ISP or mobile-network outage. YouTube’s recommendations do not guarantee uninterrupted service.
Help viewers use less mobile data
Each listener downloads playback separately from the broadcaster’s upload. A viewer can choose a lower available quality in the YouTube player, but the available choices can depend on the device and stream. Check the actual player rather than promising a specific low-data control: the cited YouTube sources do not verify a current live-stream “audio only” option or a guaranteed low-data setting.

Check mobile live eligibility if you are streaming from a phone
YouTube’s mobile live-streaming help page lists at least 50 subscribers, channel verification, and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days among the conditions for mobile live streaming. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. These mobile requirements are not a complete eligibility guide for every encoder workflow.
