How to Conduct a UX Audit of Your WordPress Site

A useful WordPress UX audit checks whether people can find what they need and complete important tasks—not whether a site earns a high score from a tool. Define a few key user goals, test representative pages on desktop and mobile, inspect accessibility and performance, and turn observed problems into prioritized fixes that you retest.

What a WordPress UX audit should establish

A UX audit is a task-focused investigation: can a first-time visitor understand the page, find the right path and complete an important action? Choose tasks tied to your site’s purpose, such as finding a product, submitting a contact form or booking an appointment. The goal is to document obstacles in the actual experience, not to produce a single visual or automated score.

Keep the audit scope explicit. UX overlaps with accessibility, performance, SEO, security and site configuration, but a check in one category does not establish that the others are sound. WordPress Site Health, for example, helps diagnose configuration and maintenance conditions; it is not a complete evaluation of usability.

Plan the audit around users and representative pages

Choose users, goals and critical tasks

Identify the audience you are evaluating and the outcomes the site should support. Write each task as a goal a visitor would recognize—for example, “find the return policy” or “request an appointment”—rather than as an instruction to click a particular menu item. That makes it possible to notice when the site’s labels or structure do not match users’ expectations.

Inventory templates and test screen sizes

List the page types a visitor may encounter. Include the home page, navigation, search results, content pages, landing pages, forms, checkout if applicable, and error pages. Select representative examples from each template rather than limiting the review to the home page. Check both desktop and mobile widths; a navigation or form that works at one size may become difficult to use at another.

Walk through tasks as a first-time visitor

For each task, start from the page where a new visitor is likely to arrive and proceed without relying on knowledge of the site’s structure. Record the point where progress becomes unclear or a user could make a consequential mistake. Note what the page shows, what you expected to happen and what happened instead.

Look especially for unclear labels, hard-to-find navigation, competing or ambiguous calls to action, missing confirmation after an action, and forms that do not explain how to recover from an error. An issue report should identify the affected page or template and task, describe the evidence, and explain the consequence for the visitor. Avoid writing only “the page is confusing”; specify what made the next step difficult to identify.

Check accessibility as part of usability

Use WCAG Level AA as the accessibility benchmark for WordPress ecosystem work. WordPress Developer Resources’ current coding guidance expects ecosystem code to conform to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, and recommends usability testing alongside accessibility testing: WordPress accessibility coding standards.

During the audit, check keyboard navigation and visible focus, heading structure, meaningful link names, text alternatives for informative images, color contrast, form labels and useful error messages. Test whether people can perceive and operate the interface without relying only on a mouse or on color alone. These checks help reveal usability barriers as well as accessibility defects.

Automated scans can find repeatable issues, but they cannot establish that a site is accessible. W3C explains that “Knowledgeable human evaluation is required to determine if a site is accessible” in its Evaluating Web Accessibility Overview. Verify scan findings manually and include human evaluation in the audit.

Use WordPress Site Health for technical context

In the dashboard, open Tools > Site Health. The Status tab groups critical issues, recommended improvements and passed tests. The Info tab provides details about WordPress, plugins, themes, the server and database, and supports exporting that information as evidence. WordPress.org describes the feature as: “WordPress offers a diagnosis of your site’s health.” See the Site Health Screen documentation and Site Health documentation.

Use these results to identify technical conditions that may affect the experience or need investigation. A passing Site Health check does not show that visitors can understand the navigation, complete a task, or use a form successfully; those questions require task-based review.

Review performance on real page types

Assess performance on representative templates and pages, not just the home page. Review page-level loading behavior alongside Core Web Vitals so that you consider user-oriented performance signals as well as whether content eventually appears. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ 2024 guidance recommends Core Web Vitals as free monitoring tools for site health and page performance: Core Web Vitals guidance.

Combine automated checks with human review

Automated checks are useful for repeatable first-pass findings across many pages, but they do not replace task walkthroughs or accessibility evaluation. For example, the WebDiagnosis Site Audit plugin listing advertises 170+ checks across 14 areas: WebDiagnosis Site Audit plugin. Treat that figure as the plugin’s advertised coverage, not as evidence that a site is usable, accessible or free of defects.

Choose an audit approach according to the work you need it to do:

  • Coverage: Does it address the relevant mix of UX, accessibility, performance, SEO, security and configuration?
  • Evidence: Does it provide only automated results, or can you pair them with human task testing?
  • Task and template testing: Can you assess real user goals across the page types and screen sizes in scope?
  • Prioritization: Does it help distinguish consequential barriers from lower-impact observations?
  • Repeatability: Can you run the same checks after changes to detect regressions?
  • Cost and skills: What technical knowledge, time or paid support does the approach require?

Use scans to find candidates for investigation, then confirm each finding in context. A clean automated report is not a substitute for observing whether a person can complete the task.

Prioritize findings and assign fixes

Rank issues by severity, how many users are likely to be affected, impact on task completion or conversion, confidence in the finding, and effort to implement a fix. This avoids treating every warning as equally urgent. A barrier that prevents visitors from submitting a key form should generally take precedence over a minor inconsistency that does not impede a task.

For each issue, record an owner, the evidence, a recommended fix and a retest condition. Make the retest condition concrete—for example, “a keyboard-only user can reach, identify and submit the form, and receives an understandable confirmation or error message.”

Retest after changes

After a fix is implemented, repeat the affected task on the relevant template and screen size. Confirm whether the original problem is resolved and check that the change has not introduced a new barrier elsewhere in the flow. Record the result as resolved or still needing work, so the next audit can distinguish completed fixes from open issues.
