Snagit can automate image capture in four distinct ways: save a preset and trigger it with a hotkey for repeatable screenshots; use a delay to catch a menu or tooltip; schedule or repeat captures at intervals on Windows; or use scrolling capture for long pages and tables. Delayed capture works on Windows and Mac. TechSmith’s current documentation identifies scheduled and continuous capture as Windows-only.

Choose the right automatic capture method

What you need Snagit method Platform and behavior
Repeat the same capture with one key Saved preset with an assigned hotkey Windows workflow documented directly; shortcuts are supported in Snagit generally.
Catch a dropdown, tooltip, hover state, or timed pop-up Delayed capture Works on Windows and Mac; delay can be set up to one minute.
Capture at a particular date and time, or repeatedly at intervals Scheduled or continuous capture Windows only in current TechSmith documentation; supports unattended timing.
Capture a full webpage or long table extending beyond the screen Scrolling capture Vertical and horizontal scrolling are documented; capture proceeds through content outside the visible screen.

These methods automate different parts of the task. A hotkey reduces repeated setup, a delay gives you time to prepare a temporary screen state, a schedule handles unattended timing, and scrolling capture extends the captured area. Choose based on what should trigger the capture and whether the content is visible at once.

Set up a repeatable capture with a preset and hotkey

A preset is the better choice when the same capture configuration must be used consistently. Configure the capture once, save those choices, then assign a hotkey to that specific preset. On Windows, TechSmith’s Capture Modes documentation describes starting a preset from the Presets button and assigning a hotkey to it.

  1. Configure the capture. Open the Snagit Capture window and choose the input, image capture type, preview, cursor, delay, effects, and share or output settings you need.
  2. Save the settings as a preset. Use the preset controls in the Capture window to save the configuration with a recognizable name.
  3. Assign a shortcut. Choose Add Hotkey for the preset and enter an unused key combination.
  4. Test the preset. Press the assigned combination and check that the expected area, cursor, delay, and output behavior are used.

The global Print Screen hotkey starts a capture using the settings currently selected in the Capture window. That is useful for the active setup, but a named preset hotkey is more dependable when you switch between capture types and need each workflow to retain its own configuration.

Why not rely on OneClick for exact repeatability?

OneClick is a separate widget. Its default button uses All-in-One capture with preview, cursor capture, and no delay. It does not inherit every setting currently visible in the Capture window. Use a named preset when a capture must reliably use a particular delay, cursor choice, effect, or output setting.

Use a delay to capture a menu, tooltip, or pop-up

Delayed capture gives you time to prepare a transient screen state after starting the capture. TechSmith documents custom delays of up to one minute, and the setting can be saved for repeat work. The feature is intended for dropdowns, hover states, tooltips, and timed pop-ups.

  1. In the Capture window, select the capture type and region or input you want.
  2. Set a delay of up to one minute.
  3. Start the capture so the timer begins.
  4. Before the timer expires, open the dropdown, hover over the target, trigger the tooltip or pop-up, or navigate to the desired slide.
  5. Let Snagit capture the prepared state, then review the result in the Editor.

Choose the capture type before the timer starts. A short delay is usually sufficient for opening a menu; a longer one can help when a page or slide takes time to reach the state you need. Save the configuration as a preset if you repeat the same capture.

Schedule or repeat captures at intervals on Windows

Snagit’s scheduled and continuous capture options are the documented route for unattended, time-based captures. TechSmith describes scheduling a capture for a particular date and time, or capturing continuously at regular intervals. Examples include documenting auto-advancing slides, creating time-lapse material, and tracking changes over time.

  1. Set the capture type and region first so Snagit knows what to capture.
  2. Choose the scheduled or continuous capture option in the capture controls.
  3. For a scheduled capture, specify the date and time; for continuous capture, define the interval.
  4. Start the workflow and verify that the selected region and timing are appropriate for the changing screen.

This workflow is Windows-only in current TechSmith documentation. Do not assume that it is available on Mac: TechSmith explicitly says scheduled and continuous capture are currently unavailable there. If you need a Mac capture of a temporary state, use the delayed screenshot workflow instead.

Capture an entire webpage or long table with scrolling capture

Scrolling capture collects content beyond the visible screen, making it useful for a full web page or a long data table. TechSmith confirms that Snagit supports vertical and horizontal scrolling capture. The capture opens in Snagit Editor, where it can be edited, copied, saved, or shared.

  1. Open the target page or document and launch Snagit with All-in-One capture selected.
  2. Start the capture and look for the orange scrolling arrow on the page or window.
  3. Choose vertical or horizontal scrolling, as appropriate, and let Snagit collect the content outside the visible area.
  4. Review the completed image in Snagit Editor and edit, copy, save, or share it.

If automatic scrolling is unavailable

The orange arrows do not appear on every page. When they are missing, select the region and start scrolling capture manually. Use the window’s scroll bars or mouse wheel to move through the content. On dynamic pages, scroll slowly so the content has time to load and is captured correctly.

What happens to the capture?

After capture, Snagit opens the result in Snagit Editor for review and editing. From there, you can copy or save the image, or share it using the available output options. For scrolling capture, TechSmith specifically describes the result opening in Editor; for other capture modes, the selected preview and share or output settings affect the workflow.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a website from code rather than configure Snagit on a desktop, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It accepts a URL and returns a screenshot or PDF. Its cleanup options accept cookie and consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether a capture was billed. It also provides an MCP server with tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and setup.

Example cURL request (replace the example URL with the page you want and provide your API key):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

The same endpoint can be called from Python or Node.js:

Troubleshooting automatic Snagit captures

  • The hotkey starts another app or does nothing: the key combination may conflict with another application. Change the Snagit hotkey or allow Snagit to override the conflicting assignment, then test it again.
  • A preset does not use the settings you expected: confirm that you started the saved preset rather than relying on OneClick or the global Print Screen shortcut. OneClick’s default behavior does not inherit every visible Capture-window setting, and Print Screen uses the settings currently selected there.
  • The scrolling arrows are missing: some pages do not expose automatic scrolling capture. Use manual scrolling capture, moving with the window scroll bars or mouse wheel.
  • Scrolling capture misses or duplicates content on a dynamic page: scroll slowly to give the page time to load between movements.
  • You cannot find scheduled or continuous capture on Mac: those features are currently documented as unavailable on Mac. Use delayed capture for a prepared screen state, or check the documentation for the Snagit version you have installed.
  • A control or label differs from these steps: feature names and platform support may change between releases. Check the current Snagit documentation for your installed version before relying on a permanent procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Can Snagit automatically take screenshots every few seconds or minutes?

Yes, continuous interval capture is documented for Windows. Set the capture type and region, choose continuous capture, and define the interval.

Can Snagit capture a screenshot at a set date and time?

Snagit documents scheduled capture for a specific date and time on Windows. Scheduled capture is not currently available on Mac in TechSmith’s documentation.
