To make Playwright screenshots smaller without blurring them, first reduce unnecessary pixels: use scale: 'css' when device-pixel detail is not needed, and capture only the viewport, element, or clipped region you actually need. For a lossless image, save as PNG or use WebP at quality 100. Lower WebP quality or JPEG can reduce file size further, but both are lossy, so inspect text and fine UI edges before relying on them.
Choose the right compression approach
“Smaller” can mean fewer pixels, fewer captured page areas, or more aggressive encoding. These trade-offs are not interchangeable: reducing dimensions removes detail, while lossy encoding can introduce visible artifacts even when dimensions stay the same.

- Visual regression or pixel-sensitive evidence: keep a lossless format—PNG or WebP at quality 100—and avoid changing scale or capture area unless the test is intended to change.
- Review or sharing: try WebP below quality 100 on representative pages. Inspect the result at its intended display size, especially text, icons, gradients, and thin borders.
- High-DPI detail is unnecessary: use CSS scale to avoid storing extra device-pixel detail.
- Only part of the page matters: capture an element, clip, or viewport instead of the full page.
Playwright’s Page API documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP. PNG does not use the quality option. The API says WebP quality 100 (the default) produces a lossless image; lower values use lossy compression. JPEG is also lossy, and its documented default quality is 80. Check the documentation for your installed Playwright version before relying on defaults.
Reduce pixel dimensions without changing the page layout
Playwright’s scale option controls output pixels, not CSS layout. Set scale: 'css' for one output pixel per CSS pixel. With scale: 'device', output pixels follow device-pixel resolution; on high-DPI screens this can make screenshots twice as large or larger. Use device scale when fine high-density rendering detail is part of the evidence, not simply because it is the default.

const screenshot = await page.screenshot({
type: 'webp',
quality: 100,
scale: 'css'
});
This example keeps WebP lossless while avoiding extra device-pixel resolution. If you need an exact visual-regression baseline, keep the existing scale and format consistent across captures: changing either can change the baseline pixels.
Capture only the area you need
Reducing the captured area lowers the number of pixels stored without lowering clarity inside the retained area. Select the capture type based on what the image needs to show:
- Viewport: the visible screen; use the default page screenshot when below-the-fold content is irrelevant.
- Element: a specific component, such as a dialog or card.
- Clip: a chosen rectangle when the area of interest does not correspond to one element.
- Full page: the page beyond the viewport; use
fullPage: trueonly when that content is needed.
// Capture one component
await page.locator('.pricing-card').screenshot({ path: 'card.png' });
// Capture a rectangular region
await page.screenshot({
path: 'region.png',
clip: { x: 40, y: 120, width: 600, height: 400 }
});
// Capture the entire page only when required
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
Element screenshots use the locator’s screenshot API; page screenshots accept clip and full-page options. Confirm coordinates and target elements at the viewport size and state your test actually uses.

Use lossy encoding only after checking the result
For smaller files intended for people rather than exact pixel comparison, lower WebP quality gradually and compare both the output bytes and visible details. There is no universally safe quality value or guaranteed size reduction: results depend on the page and image content. Do not assume a setting that works for one page will preserve fine text or borders on another.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'review.webp',
type: 'webp',
quality: 85,
scale: 'css'
});
The value 85 here is an example to test, not a documented recommendation or guarantee. Inspect representative pages and states before adopting a lossy setting. JPEG is another lossy option; because text and fine UI edges can show artifacts, do not use it for pixel-sensitive snapshots. Playwright documents JPEG quality as 80 by default, but a default is not a promise of visual suitability.
Keep visual-regression baselines lossless
Playwright’s screenshot assertion documentation accepts PNG and WebP snapshots and describes both as lossless. For a baseline where exact appearance matters, use PNG or WebP at quality 100, and keep capture dimensions, scale, and page state consistent. If you change the format, scale, or capture area, validate the resulting baseline changes against the test suite rather than treating them as compression-only changes.

Post-process a screenshot buffer when built-in options are not enough
Playwright can return screenshot data as a buffer instead of writing directly to a file. Its screenshots guide describes post-processing the buffer or passing it to a third-party pixel-diff facility. The guide does not endorse a particular image optimizer, so evaluate any processing library on copies of representative screenshots and check transparency, color, text, and edges after processing.
Recommended Free Tools
const buffer = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png', scale: 'css' });
// Pass buffer to your chosen processing step or pixel-diff tool.
Keep the original while evaluating an optimizer. A smaller output is useful only if its visible quality and any required alpha channel or color behavior remain acceptable.
Measure the result instead of assuming a saving
Compare output file bytes and inspect the same representative pages under the same browser, viewport, and page state. Record the selected format, quality, scale, and capture area alongside the result so you can reproduce it. The official documentation establishes available controls, not a reduction percentage for your site; no single setting guarantees a particular file size.

Troubleshooting
- Screenshot is larger than expected: check whether the capture is full-page and whether it uses device scale. If below-the-fold or high-DPI detail is not needed, capture a smaller region or use CSS scale.
- Text or borders look blurry: you may have enabled lossy WebP or JPEG. Return to PNG or WebP quality 100, then compare again.
- The
qualitysetting has no effect: PNG does not use Playwright’s quality option. Choose WebP or JPEG if lossy quality control is acceptable. - Visual tests fail after changing settings: format, scale, or capture area may have changed the snapshot pixels. Restore the previous settings or deliberately review and update the baseline.
- Post-processing alters transparency or color: inspect the processing library’s output and settings on a copy; do not replace the original until the result meets the requirement.

If you need screenshots returned by an API rather than captured in your own Playwright run, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot from one GET request. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is WebP quality 100 lossless in Playwright?
Yes. The Playwright Page API documents WebP quality 100 as lossless; lower quality values are lossy.
Does Playwright compress PNG screenshots with the quality option?
No. The PNG screenshot format does not use the quality option.
Should visual-regression screenshots use JPEG?
No, not when exact pixels matter. Use PNG or WebP at quality 100 for a lossless baseline.
