One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCompress an image by first resizing it to the largest dimensions you actually need, then choosing an encoder and compression mode that fit the content. Use lossy JPEG, WebP, or AVIF for most photographs; use PNG, lossless WebP/AVIF, or SVG for screenshots, logos, diagrams, and other sharp artwork. Compare the resulting bytes and inspect text, edges, faces, and gradients at the size visitors will see.
What image compression changes
Compression removes redundant image data so a file needs fewer bytes. Lossless compression reconstructs the original exactly, byte for byte. Lossy compression changes image data to obtain a smaller file; the discarded detail cannot be recovered.
Photographs generally tolerate carefully selected lossy settings because small changes in texture are hard to notice. Screenshots, diagrams, charts, logos, and line art contain hard edges and text that expose blur, ringing, and halos, so begin with lossless output or keep a vector source such as SVG.
A reliable compression workflow
- Keep the original. Store a camera original, exported master, or lossless working file. Create delivery copies rather than repeatedly recompressing a JPEG.
- Resize before encoding. Determine the largest rendered width and height. Sending a 4,000-pixel image to a 700-pixel slot wastes bytes even if compression is excellent.
- Match format and mode to content. Select a photographic lossy format or a sharp-graphics lossless format using the table below.
- Choose a starting quality. For JPEG, 75% is a reasonable starting point, not a universal answer. WebP and AVIF require an explicit choice between lossy and lossless modes.
- Remove unnecessary metadata. EXIF location, camera details, thumbnails, and editing history add weight and can create privacy risks. Retain the color profile when it is needed for accurate display.
- Inspect at the intended display size. Check small text, one-pixel lines, faces, skies, foliage, gradients, and transparent edges. Zooming far beyond the actual display can make acceptable output look worse than it is.
- Compare bytes and quality. Keep the smallest version that meets the visual requirement. The best setting depends on the source image and encoder, so a single quality number cannot guarantee a result.
Choose the right format
| Content | Preferred starting format | Why and what to check |
|---|---|---|
| Photographs | JPEG, lossy WebP, or lossy AVIF | Lossy coding usually removes less noticeable detail. Inspect skin, skies, foliage, and fine texture for blocks or smearing. |
| Screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art | PNG, lossless WebP/AVIF, or SVG when the source is vector | Sharp edges and text reveal ringing and blur. SVG scales without raster artifacts. |
| Images with transparency | PNG, WebP, or AVIF | JPEG has no alpha channel. Check halos around partially transparent pixels. |
| Animation | Animated WebP or AVIF; APNG when lossless animation is required | Browser support and fallback requirements vary, so test playback in your target browsers. |
WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, and metadata. AVIF is a high-performance, royalty-free option with strong compression and broad support in modern browsers. PNG remains a dependable choice for precise reproduction and alpha transparency, while JPEG remains a practical, widely supported photographic format.

When JPEG is still the right answer
Use JPEG when compatibility with older software matters, when the source is photographic, or when your existing pipeline is JPEG-based. Export once from a high-quality or lossless master. Opening and saving the same lossy JPEG repeatedly compounds artifacts.
When WebP or AVIF is better
Test WebP and AVIF when reducing transfer size is important and your delivery stack can provide fallbacks. Both can be lossy or lossless; selecting the file extension alone does not determine the mode. AVIF may take longer to encode, so account for build time or on-demand processing.
Quality settings, dimensions, and metadata
Start with a test set, not a magic number
A 75% quality setting should yield decent JPEG results according to MDN, but it is only a starting point. Export a representative image at several settings, compare file bytes, and inspect the rendered result. A busy photograph may survive a lower setting than a portrait with smooth skin or a product image with fine text.
Resize to real display requirements
Measure the largest CSS slot, then account for the device pixel ratio. If an image is never displayed wider than 800 CSS pixels, a 4,000-pixel delivery file is usually unnecessary. Generate a few widths rather than one oversized universal file. Keep enough resolution for high-density screens without sending desktop dimensions to phones.

Responsive delivery on a website
Compression is only half the transfer problem. Deliver a correctly sized variant and load it at the right time:
- Use
srcsetto list width variants andsizesto describe the slot. - Use
<picture>with AVIF and WebP sources, followed by a JPEG or PNG fallback when compatibility requires it. - Set explicit
widthandheightattributes so the browser reserves layout space and avoids layout shifts. - Lazy-load images below the fold. Do not lazy-load the above-the-fold or Largest Contentful Paint image, because delaying it can harm perceived performance.
- Set meaningful alternative text and keep decorative images empty in the accessibility layer.
A basic pattern is:
<picture>
<source srcset="hero-1200.avif 1200w, hero-800.avif 800w" type="image/avif">
<source srcset="hero-1200.webp 1200w, hero-800.webp 800w" type="image/webp">
<img src="hero-800.jpg" srcset="hero-400.jpg 400w, hero-800.jpg 800w, hero-1200.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 800px" width="1200" height="800" loading="lazy" alt="Description of the image">
</picture>
Remove loading="lazy" from an above-the-fold image. Confirm that your server sends the correct MIME type and that cache headers allow variants to be reused.
How to judge whether compression is good enough
- Text and lines: look for ringing, fuzzy glyphs, and broken one-pixel strokes.
- Edges and transparency: inspect halos against both light and dark backgrounds.
- Faces and skin: check blotchy patches and waxy texture.
- Gradients and skies: check banding and posterization.
- Texture: check whether foliage, hair, fabric, or product detail has turned into mush.
- Operational fit: record dimensions, byte size, format, encoding time, browser behavior, and whether metadata or animation was preserved.
Compare at the actual rendered size on a normal display. A file that looks perfect at 400% zoom may be needlessly large, while a file that looks fine in a thumbnail may fail when opened full size.

Common failure modes and fixes
The file is still huge
Check dimensions first; oversized pixels dominate many files. Generate a width appropriate to the largest slot, then compare WebP or AVIF with your JPEG baseline. Remove unneeded metadata and verify that the server is not delivering the original file through a redirect or incorrect srcset choice.
Text or UI screenshots look blurry
Switch from lossy to lossless PNG, WebP, or AVIF, or use the original SVG. If you must use lossy encoding, raise quality and inspect at 100% of the intended display size. Do not repeatedly save an already compressed screenshot.

Transparent edges have a dark fringe
Use a format with alpha support and check how the encoder handles premultiplied transparency. Export against the background colors on which the image will actually appear, and compare both light and dark placements.
Colors changed after export
Check the source and output color profiles. A metadata-stripping step may have removed the profile your viewer used. Standardize the color-space conversion before compression and test in the target browser.

Provide a JPEG or PNG fallback in <picture>, verify MIME types, and test older clients relevant to your audience. Do not remove the fallback solely because modern desktop browsers work.
Images load late or cause layout jumps
Add explicit dimensions, avoid lazy-loading the main above-the-fold image, and use srcset/sizes so the browser can select a suitable resource before layout and paint.

If the image you need is a webpage capture, ScreenshotNeo can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It is useful before compression because it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the shot was billed.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for options such as viewport and device presets, retina scale, full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, click and wait conditions, request blocking, cookies and headers, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching TTLs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, and usage reporting. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Encoding time, image bytes, and visual quality trade against one another. AVIF can reduce transfer size but may require more CPU to encode. Pre-generate common responsive widths during a build when traffic is predictable; use on-demand processing when uploads are unpredictable, with caching to avoid repeating work. Keep masters outside the public delivery path, cache immutable derivatives by content hash, and monitor the actual formats and dimensions browsers request.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make an image smaller without changing its dimensions?
Yes, by removing metadata or using a more efficient encoder, but the largest savings usually come from reducing dimensions when the image is larger than its display slot.
Is AVIF always smaller than WebP or JPEG?
No. Results depend on the source, encoder, settings, and required quality. Measure each representative image rather than assuming one format wins.
Should I keep the original after compression?
Yes. Keep a high-quality or lossless master and generate delivery copies so you can change dimensions or settings without accumulating lossy artifacts.
