Generate accurate event-poster variants by storing the event as one instant, formatting that instant for each audience’s named time zone, and inserting the resulting date and time into a reusable design template. Do not create variants by adding fixed hour offsets: civil-time rules can change, and some conversions cross a calendar-day boundary.

How the poster-generation pipeline works

Keep the design and the event data separate. A template defines the shared artwork and named text layers; a Node.js script validates the event, formats its start instant separately for every target zone, and sends each set of modifications to a renderer.

  1. Collect the event title, start time, source zone if the time was entered locally, venue or host, and intended audience zones.
  2. Resolve any source-local date and clock time into one unambiguous instant.
  3. Format that instant using an explicit locale and target time zone, including the date.
  4. Submit the localized fields to a reusable poster template.
  5. Track each render until it completes, then save or publish the resulting asset.

This separation prevents the artwork or a machine’s default time zone from silently determining the event time.

Resolve the event time before formatting it

Prefer an unambiguous instant

If an event system already supplies a timestamp with an offset, such as 2026-11-08T17:00:00-05:00, it identifies one instant. JavaScript can parse that value as a Date; formatting it in another zone changes its display, not the instant itself.

If an organizer enters “November 8 at 5 p.m.”, that is not enough information to resolve the event. You also need the applicable year and a named source zone such as America/New_York. Resolve the wall-clock time with a time-zone-aware library or service, and define how to handle ambiguous or nonexistent local times around clock changes. Intl.DateTimeFormat formats a resolved date/time; it does not by itself decide which instant an ambiguous local time means.

A numeric offset in an ISO timestamp can identify an instant, but it is not a substitute for a regional time zone when interpreting future local schedules. A fixed offset does not encode that region’s changing civil-time rules. Keep the source zone in the event record for display and audit purposes even after storing the resolved instant.

Format the same instant for every audience

MDN describes the API this way: “The Intl.DateTimeFormat object enables language-sensitive date and time formatting.” Set both locale and timeZone explicitly rather than inheriting the server’s settings. Include a calendar date: converting between zones can put a poster on the previous or next day.

const formatter = new Intl.DateTimeFormat('en-US', {
  weekday: 'short',
  year: 'numeric',
  month: 'short',
  day: 'numeric',
  hour: 'numeric',
  minute: '2-digit',
  timeZone: 'America/Los_Angeles',
  timeZoneName: 'short',
});

const localEventTime = formatter.format(new Date('2026-11-08T17:00:00-05:00'));
console.log(localEventTime);

The example uses an explicit offset solely to make the input instant unambiguous. Choose a locale, 12- or 24-hour convention, date style, and zone label that match the audience and the poster’s available space. Abbreviations can be unclear across regions; consider adding a human-readable zone or city label as separate template text.

A Node.js workflow using a hosted template API

A hosted renderer is a practical fit when a designer needs to maintain a reusable composition while a script changes text and other fields. Bannerbear’s tutorial covers this event-poster use case and its documentation describes template IDs and named modifications. The following illustrates the integration pattern; it is not a claim of independently tested code. Confirm the SDK’s current package and API-version instructions before using it.

Prepare the template and inputs

Create a poster template with clearly named layers, for example event_title, local_date_time, zone_label, and venue. Confirm the exact layer names in the provider’s template interface. Provide the script with a resolved timestamp, target zones, and credentials through environment configuration rather than committing secrets to source control.

The sample uses the Bannerbear Node SDK pattern and assumes a package version exposing Bannerbear and create_image. Install and configure the version documented by Bannerbear for your account; keep the credential in an environment variable such as BANNERBEAR_API_KEY.

import Bannerbear from 'bannerbear';

const apiKey = process.env.BANNERBEAR_API_KEY;
if (!apiKey) throw new Error('Set BANNERBEAR_API_KEY');

const bb = new Bannerbear(apiKey);

const event = {
  title: 'Community Product Launch',
  // A timestamp with an explicit offset represents one instant.
  startsAt: '2026-11-08T17:00:00-05:00',
  venue: 'Online',
};

const targets = [
  { timeZone: 'America/New_York', locale: 'en-US', label: 'New York' },
  { timeZone: 'Europe/London', locale: 'en-GB', label: 'London' },
  { timeZone: 'Asia/Tokyo', locale: 'ja-JP', label: 'Tokyo' },
];

const templateId = process.env.BANNERBEAR_TEMPLATE_ID;
if (!templateId) throw new Error('Set BANNERBEAR_TEMPLATE_ID');

const eventInstant = new Date(event.startsAt);
if (Number.isNaN(eventInstant.getTime())) {
  throw new Error(`Invalid event instant: ${event.startsAt}`);
}

for (const target of targets) {
  const localDateTime = new Intl.DateTimeFormat(target.locale, {
    weekday: 'short',
    year: 'numeric',
    month: 'short',
    day: 'numeric',
    hour: 'numeric',
    minute: '2-digit',
    timeZone: target.timeZone,
    timeZoneName: 'short',
  }).format(eventInstant);

  const result = await bb.create_image({
    template: templateId,
    modifications: [
      { name: 'event_title', text: event.title },
      { name: 'local_date_time', text: localDateTime },
      { name: 'zone_label', text: target.label },
      { name: 'venue', text: event.venue },
    ],
  });

  console.log({ timeZone: target.timeZone, result });
}

Map the returned job identifier and status to the corresponding target zone. The documented template-and-modifications model is the key idea; SDK method signatures and response fields can vary by package version, so use the version-specific reference rather than copying assumptions into production.

Check output format and API version

Bannerbear documents output-format options and batch capabilities, but available parameters and behavior depend on the API version you select. Keep the request and response handling aligned to that version. Its v2 reference describes normal generation as an accepted asynchronous job and recommends webhook or polling handling; it also documents a synchronous endpoint with a ten-second timeout. Do not treat an accepted job as a finished image, and do not mix v1 and v2 examples without checking their contracts.

Handle asynchronous renders and retries

Poster generation is a per-variant job lifecycle, not necessarily a single immediate file response. Persist enough information to recover safely if a worker restarts or a render is delayed.

  • Record the event identifier, target zone, locale, formatted text, template identifier, request/job identifier, current status, and final asset URL.
  • Use the API version’s documented webhook or polling mechanism to detect completion.
  • Retry failed variants without regenerating successful ones, and make retries idempotent where the provider supports it.
  • Keep the zone label alongside each output URL so a late completion cannot be assigned to the wrong audience.
  • Validate webhook authenticity and handle duplicate notifications if the API provides the relevant mechanisms.

The tracking fields and retry policy are application design advice, not a vendor-mandated schema. Check the current reference for exact status values, webhook requirements, and retention behavior.

Design and test localized poster text

A time that fits in one locale may not fit in another. A month name, weekday, zone label, or translated event title can expand the line and collide with artwork. Design text areas for the longest expected variant, use a deliberate fallback such as a shorter date style, and inspect every generated zone before distribution.

  • Test event dates near seasonal clock changes and verify the resolved instant against the organizer’s intended local time.
  • Check every locale’s punctuation, hour cycle, date order, and zone label for readability.
  • Check long titles and venue names for clipping, wrapping, and contrast against the background.
  • Keep a human-readable zone or city label where a short abbreviation could be mistaken for another zone.

These are recommended validation cases, not reported test results. A poster should communicate both the local date and time clearly enough that recipients do not have to infer a time zone from an ambiguous abbreviation.

Choose a renderer: hosted template or custom SVG

Approach Good fit What you own Trade-offs
Hosted template API such as Bannerbear Teams that want an editable reusable design and API-driven variants Template setup, credentials, API integration, async job handling, and plan/credit monitoring Service and API dependency; confirm current plans, credits, formats, and version behavior with the provider
Custom SVG plus Sharp Developers who need application-controlled composition and can maintain layout code SVG generation, layout, fonts, asset loading, text fitting, and output management More implementation and typography ownership; Sharp is an image-processing library, not a poster-template editor

Sharp accepts SVG input and can output common raster formats. That makes a local pipeline possible, but your application still has to generate the SVG and manage its fonts and assets. Neither approach is established as faster or cheaper for every workload; compare them using your own volume, design workflow, output needs, and operational constraints. Vendor pricing and API details can change, so verify the current provider pages before committing.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

For many time zones, format once per target and submit variants in a controlled batch or worker queue. A provider’s batch endpoint, if supported in the API version you use, can reduce orchestration overhead, but it does not eliminate per-variant status tracking. Avoid launching an unbounded number of requests; respect documented rate limits and retry guidance.

Cost depends on the selected renderer, plan, volume, and any credits or output options that apply. Calculate an expected monthly number of variants, including re-renders and revisions, then check the provider’s current pricing and credit rules. With local rendering, there may be no per-image hosted rendering charge, but infrastructure, engineering time, fonts, storage, and delivery remain application costs. No neutral benchmark establishes a universal latency or cost winner.

For reliability, separate event-time resolution from image rendering. Save the resolved instant and the source zone, then regenerate text from that stable event record. Monitor missing jobs, failed outputs, and unusually delayed completions. Keep credentials out of logs and source control, and restrict access to final asset URLs according to the sensitivity of the event.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • The time is consistently wrong by hours: Check whether the input string has an offset or whether a local time was parsed using the server’s default zone. Resolve local inputs in their named source zone before formatting.
  • The poster shows the wrong calendar day: The conversion may legitimately cross midnight. Include the formatted date and verify that the source instant is correct; do not manually adjust the date to match the source zone.
  • A daylight-saving transition creates an unexpected result: A fixed offset may have been used where a regional zone was needed, or a wall-clock time may be ambiguous/nonexistent. Apply an explicit policy when resolving that local input.
  • Text is clipped or unreadable: The localized string is longer than the design allows. Shorten the chosen date style, enlarge the text area, or tune the template for the longest target-language output.
  • The API returns an accepted status but there is no image yet: Treat it as an asynchronous job and use the chosen version’s webhook or polling flow to obtain completion.
  • A synchronous request times out: The v2 reference documents a ten-second timeout for its synchronous endpoint. Use the documented asynchronous generation workflow for work that may exceed that limit.
  • A modification does not appear in the image: Compare the submitted modification name with the template’s exact layer name, and confirm that the request uses the right template identifier and API version.
  • Outputs are assigned to the wrong zone: Associate every job with the target zone at submission time and carry that association through completion and retry handling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does `Intl.DateTimeFormat` convert a local event time into an instant?

No. It formats a date/time for a requested zone. Resolve a local wall-clock input in its named source zone first, including a policy for ambiguous or nonexistent times.

Should a poster use a time-zone abbreviation by itself?

Usually not when recipients may find the abbreviation unclear. Include a city or human-readable zone label, and always show the local calendar date as well as the time.
