How to Compress a 24-Hour Video Playlist for a Slow Upload

A practical workflow for shrinking a 24-hour video: estimate file size, select settings for the destination, test quality and plan upload time.

Use HandBrake or another encoder to make a short test, inspect the result, then encode a copy of the full video at a lower bitrate or resolution if the quality remains acceptable. A 24-hour runtime makes even modest bitrates produce large files: at 5 Mbps video plus 384 kbps audio, the estimated size is about 58 GB. First check the destination’s upload limits and format requirements; the destination is not specified here, so no single export setting is right for every service.

How much space will a 24-hour video need?

For a 24-hour file, a useful decimal-size estimate is total average bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 = approximate GB. The calculation assumes a constant average bitrate over 86,400 seconds. A lower bitrate means fewer bytes to upload, but also less information available to represent detail and motion.

Example video setting Audio assumption Estimated 24-hour size
1080p SDR, 24–30 fps video at 8 Mbps 384 kbps stereo About 90.5 GB
720p SDR, 24–30 fps video at 5 Mbps 384 kbps stereo About 58.1 GB
480p SDR, 24–30 fps video at 2.5 Mbps 384 kbps stereo About 31.1 GB

The video and audio figures above use YouTube’s published SDR recommendations for standard frame rates and its recommended 384 kbps stereo audio. They are recommendations, not minimums or maximums; other destinations may specify different settings. The file-size figures are calculations, not published YouTube sizes. Real files vary with scene complexity, encoder behavior, audio configuration and container overhead. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

For YouTube SDR at 48, 50 or 60 fps, its recommended video bitrates are 12 Mbps for 1080p, 7.5 Mbps for 720p and 4 Mbps for 480p. YouTube separately lists HDR values; for example, 10 Mbps for 1080p and 6.5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates. Use the current guidance for your actual destination and source rather than treating these examples as universal requirements.

Check the source and destination before encoding

Before choosing settings, identify what you have and where it is going. “Playlist” could mean one long video file or several separate entries, and the receiving service’s duration, file-size, format and resumability rules are not specified here.

  • Record the source resolution, frame rate, scan type (progressive or interlaced), SDR or HDR presentation, audio tracks and current file size.
  • Check the destination’s current upload limits, supported formats, processing behavior and any playlist-specific rules.
  • Keep an untouched original. Encode a separate copy so you can change settings without losing source quality.

For YouTube, the official guidance recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scanning and the same frame rate as the recording. It advises deinterlacing interlaced sources before upload and says: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” The page also provides separate recommendations for HDR and SDR. Another host may have different requirements. Read YouTube’s current encoding guidance.

Compress the video with a test-first workflow

1. Choose a starting preset in HandBrake

HandBrake’s Web presets are intended for internet sharing, while its Creator presets target video-hosting services such as YouTube and Vimeo. Most official presets use constant-quality encoding. With that approach, you aim for a visual quality level and the resulting file size varies according to the content. HandBrake’s official presets documentation explains the preset categories.

A preset is a starting point, not proof that the output meets your destination’s requirements. Confirm the output format, video codec, dimensions, frame rate and audio tracks before encoding the full day.

2. Decide whether quality or a firm size target matters more

Constant-quality encoding is useful when you want the encoder to spend more data on complex scenes and less on simple ones, but it does not promise a particular final size. If you must fit an upload window or file-size cap, use an average video bitrate or target-size approach instead. That makes the file size more predictable, though quality can vary more between scenes.

To estimate a video bitrate budget for a target file size, convert the desired size to bits and divide by 86,400 seconds. Reserve some of the total for audio and container overhead. For example, the target is not just the video bitrate: audio and the MP4 container also contribute to the file. FFmpeg’s documentation describes bitrate as an encoding option; exact controls depend on the encoder and command or application you use.

3. Preserve useful detail without wasting bits

  • Lowering resolution reduces the amount of spatial detail the encoder must represent and can reduce file size. Use it only if the smaller picture remains legible for the content, especially text, diagrams or small on-screen details.
  • Lowering bitrate reduces data use but can create visible blocking, smearing or loss of fine detail, especially in fast motion, noise or dark scenes.
  • Do not upscale a low-resolution source; it increases dimensions without restoring detail.
  • Keep the source frame rate unless the destination specifically calls for another value. A lower frame rate can reduce data, but it also changes motion.
  • Preserve HDR only if the source is HDR and the destination supports the chosen workflow. Use the destination’s appropriate HDR guidance rather than applying SDR figures to HDR material.

4. Encode and inspect a representative segment

Make a short test containing representative material: motion, text, dark scenes, speech and any other demanding sections. Review picture quality, audio clarity and synchronization, and check that the expected tracks and frame rate survived the export. Adjust the resolution, bitrate or quality setting and test again if needed. Do not infer the quality of a full-day encode from a short, unusually simple scene.

5. Encode the whole playlist and allow time for it

Once the test is acceptable, encode a copy of the complete file or each playlist entry, following the destination’s file rules. A long encode can take many hours, depending on the source, settings and computer. HandBrake says hardware presets use dedicated media engines optimized for maximum encoding speed; whether that option is available and how it affects the result depends on the device and encoder. HandBrake’s video-presets documentation describes the hardware-preset distinction.

Estimate the upload time over a slow connection

Divide the file’s size in bits by the sustained upload rate in bits per second. This is a lower-bound arithmetic estimate, not a guarantee: real upload speed fluctuates, and protocol overhead, interruptions or a service’s processing steps can extend the total time.

For example, a 58 GB decimal file is about 464 billion bits. At a sustained 5 Mbps upload rate, the calculation is about 25.8 hours, before overhead or interruptions. Measure the upload rate you can sustain, not just the download speed shown by an internet plan, and leave extra time if the connection drops or the upload cannot resume.

Choose settings by the constraint that matters most

Constraint Practical choice Trade-off to check
Upload size or deadline Set a target bitrate or size and estimate total bitrate including audio. More predictable size can mean uneven quality in complex scenes.
Visual consistency Start with constant-quality encoding and inspect demanding scenes. Final size is content-dependent and may be too large for a strict upload limit.
Fine detail and text Retain sufficient resolution and test the smallest text or detail viewers must read. Higher resolution and bitrate increase data to upload.
Fast motion Test motion-heavy segments before committing to a low bitrate. Compression artifacts can be more noticeable in movement.
Encoding time Consider a supported hardware-encoding preset if speed is the priority. Speed and output quality depend on the device, encoder and settings.

Common problems and fixes

The finished file is still too large

Check the output’s actual average bitrate and duration. If using constant quality, switch to a target bitrate or size when a firm cap matters. Otherwise, test a lower bitrate or resolution and inspect the same demanding scenes before re-encoding everything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The upload estimate looks impossibly long

Confirm the file size is in decimal GB and the speed is the sustained upload rate in Mbps. Convert GB to bits before dividing by bits per second. The calculation excludes variability and interruptions, so plan beyond the arithmetic result.

The compressed video looks blurred, blocky or jerky

Raise the bitrate or quality setting, or retain a higher resolution. If motion is the issue, check that the output frame rate matches the source. Re-test a demanding segment; a lower file size is only useful if the result remains fit for viewers.

The service rejects the file or handles it differently than expected

Verify its current format, codec, resolution, duration and size requirements; do not assume YouTube’s recommendations apply to another host. For YouTube, compare the export against its current upload encoding guidance and make sure interlaced material has been deinterlaced.

The encode takes too long

Allow more time or test a supported hardware preset. Faster encoding is not guaranteed on every system, and the output still needs inspection before upload.
