To complete The Ghost in the Portrait in Disney Dreamlight Valley, find and water five Zero motifs in Oogie Boogie’s Mirror Lair, craft Real Ghostly Paint Thinner from the five Zero Essence, use it to upgrade your Watering Can, then water the painting trapping Zero. The quest is the third week of the 2026 Season of Scares event and requires The Oogie Boogie Contract. Some additional item tasks are documented, but a complete official objective order is not available.
Unlock the quest and enter the Mirror Lair
The official event announcement lists the Peaceful Meadow, Scrooge McDuck’s Store, and Chez Remy as the unlocks needed to begin Oogie Boogie’s quests. Watch your Mail and go to Scrooge McDuck’s Store to start the event questline. Read the official event announcement.

Look for the five Zero motifs around the Mirror Lair and water each one. They yield five Zero Essence in total. The documented locations are:

After watering all five, collect the five Zero Essence. The Zero Essence item reference lists these locations.
Craft the paint thinner and free Zero
- At a crafting station, combine all five Zero Essence to make one Real Ghostly Paint Thinner.
- Use the paint thinner from your inventory to upgrade the Watering Can.
- Use the upgraded Watering Can on the painting trapping Zero.
The Real Ghostly Paint Thinner item reference documents its crafting and use.

- Collect five Lucky Wheel Cogs: Smash the Lucky Wheel with a Pickaxe to collect the cogs. They remain in your inventory after the quest. Lucky Wheel Cog reference.
Know the event deadline
The official schedule places the six weekly quests on September 23, September 30, October 7, October 14, October 21, and October 28, 2026. The announcement says to begin the first Oogie Boogie quest before November 4, 2026, to keep the quest chain; if you start it before that date, you can complete the remaining quests later at your own pace. Oogie Boogie leaves the Valley after November 4 for players who have not started the chain. The event progression unlocks Zero as a permanent companion.
