If YouTube removed your active livestream for copyright and applied a strike, open the copyright-strike notice or YouTube Studio and follow the Copyright School link or prompt shown for your account. Complete the school, then allow 90 days from the date the strike was applied for it to expire. Completing Copyright School is required for this wait-and-expire route; it does not restore the removed livestream.
First, check whether you have a strike or a different copyright issue
A copyright strike follows a copyright removal request. It is different from a Content ID claim. YouTube also scans live broadcasts for matches to third-party material; that scan can interrupt a stream without being the same thing as a strike. If you archive a livestream, a Content ID claim may be made after the broadcast ends. Check the notice and YouTube Studio for the specific status applied to your channel. YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance and its live-stream copyright guidance describe these separate situations.

How to complete Copyright School
- Open the strike notice or YouTube Studio. Use the Copyright School link or prompt shown for your account. YouTube does not document a single stable screen-by-screen path that applies to every account, so follow the prompt presented in your own notice or Studio.
- Complete the school. YouTube requires this for the strike-expiry route. If you already completed Copyright School, you do not need to restart the 90-day clock.
- Track the date the strike was applied. YouTube says the strike expires 90 days after that date when Copyright School has been completed. The period runs from the strike date, not from the day you complete the school.
- Check Studio for both strike status and live-stream access. YouTube says an active livestream removed for copyright results in a strike and restricts live-streaming access for 7 days. This restriction is distinct from the 90-day strike-expiry period.
Strike expiration does not reinstate the removed livestream. The school-and-wait option clears the strike; the video is not restored through that route. See YouTube’s copyright removal and strike-resolution options.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn you to stop using the material. If you address the issue, the broadcast may continue; if the matched content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A livestream can also be terminated if it receives a copyright or Community Guidelines strike.
#1 Best Overall
If you have permission to use material, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without that, a licensed stream can still be interrupted, including when the content is restricted by territory. If the stream is archived, a Content ID claim may arrive after the broadcast ends. These live interruptions and later claims should not be mistaken for the same event as a copyright removal request that applies a strike. YouTube explains live-stream matching and allowlisting here.
Choose the right way to resolve the strike
YouTube lists three strike-resolution routes. The right one depends on whether you accept the removal, can reach the claimant, or believe YouTube removed the material by mistake.
Rank #2
| Route | When it fits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Complete Copyright School and wait | You are not contesting the removal and want to use the strike-expiry route. | The strike expires 90 days after its application date, provided Copyright School is completed. The removed livestream is not reinstated. |
| Ask the claimant to retract the removal request | You can contact the person or rights holder who submitted the request and seek a retraction. | The route depends on the claimant agreeing to retract. Use the details in YouTube’s notice to identify the request and claimant. |
| Submit a counter notification | You believe the removal was mistaken—for example, the material was misidentified or your use qualifies for an exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain. | This is a legal request, not part of Copyright School. YouTube forwards it to the claimant, who has 10 US business days to respond with evidence of legal action. |
The routes and their conditions are set out in YouTube’s removal-request guidance. Do not submit a counter notification simply to speed up expiration or because you disagree with the outcome; use it only if you believe the removal was mistaken and understand the legal and disclosure consequences.

Before sending a counter notification
- Be prepared to explain why the removal was mistaken. YouTube identifies misidentification and copyright exceptions such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain as possible grounds. A counter notification is a legal process, not a routine appeal.
- Understand the information-sharing consequence. YouTube says your information is shared with the claimant when the counter notification is forwarded.
- Know the response window. After a valid counter notification is forwarded, the claimant has 10 US business days to respond with evidence of legal action.
- Do not provide false information or misuse the process. YouTube warns that this can lead to account or legal consequences.
For a complex dispute or concern about disclosing personal information, YouTube says legal help may be relevant. A lawyer is not required to complete Copyright School. Read YouTube’s counter-notification guidance and copyright-removal tips before deciding.

If YouTube gave you a scheduled removal notice
A scheduled removal request may give you 7 days to act before the content is removed and a strike is applied. During that window, deleting the content can avoid the strike. Once the removal and strike have taken effect, deleting the video does not resolve the strike. Follow the deadline and instructions in the notice; do not assume deletion after the deadline will undo the strike. YouTube’s removal-request guidance describes this option.
Keep the channel risk in view
YouTube says three copyright strikes within 90 days can make a channel subject to termination. This is the copyright-strike threshold; do not count a Content ID claim as a strike unless YouTube has separately applied one. Check Studio and your copyright notices for the actual status on each item. YouTube’s strike guidance explains the consequence.

If the issue has made you reconsider how to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a separate way to run uploaded videos as a 24/7 stream; it does not resolve a copyright strike, replace Copyright School, or guarantee that content complies with YouTube rules. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
