Use a browser test to compare rendered screenshots with an approved baseline; use Grafana Loki to investigate the timestamped logs around a failed comparison. Loki aggregates and queries logs—it does not compare screenshot pixels. A reliable workflow keeps the images and visual diffs with the test artifacts, then correlates failures with relevant application and test logs.
What Loki does—and what it does not do
Grafana Loki is a horizontally scalable log aggregation system. It indexes a small set of labels for each log stream, stores compressed log data in chunks, and supports LogQL queries, exploration in Grafana, and alerting. Those capabilities help explain events around a visual test; they do not inspect PNGs or determine whether two screenshots differ.

For pixel-level visual regression, use a browser testing tool such as Playwright Test screenshot assertions. It captures a page and compares the result with a reference image. Keep the responsibilities distinct: the browser test produces the screenshot, baseline, and comparison result; Loki holds logs that may explain what happened during the run.

| Question | Browser screenshot test | Loki and Grafana |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Rendered browser screenshot and approved baseline | Timestamped log streams and labels |
| What it answers | Did the UI change beyond the accepted comparison tolerance? | What relevant events or errors occurred around the test or incident? |
| Typical output | Screenshot, baseline, visual diff, and test result | Log query results, log visualizations, dashboards, or alerts |
| Main limitation | Rendering differences and volatile page content can create noise | Loki cannot compare screenshot pixels; logs help only when relevant events are collected |
Set up a repeatable Playwright screenshot comparison
1. Choose the route and capture conditions
Decide which page state matters: the route, viewport, browser, authentication state, and test data. Fix these inputs where possible. Keep the environment consistent between baseline creation and later runs; operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can all affect rendering. Playwright advises running comparisons in the same environment used to generate the baseline.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
2. Add a screenshot assertion
In a Playwright Test, capture the page with an assertion such as:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual regression', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
Replace the example URL with the route under test. Ensure the page has reached the intended state before capture—for example, wait for its key content or a deliberate readiness condition rather than relying on an arbitrary delay.

3. Review the first baseline
If the reference image does not exist, Playwright can generate one. Treat that image as a proposed baseline, not an automatically approved truth: inspect it, confirm it represents the intended design, then commit it or approve it through your team’s baseline process. When a later run fails, inspect the actual image and diff before deciding whether the change is an expected design update, a real regression, or capture noise. Updating a baseline changes the reference; it does not prove that the new UI is correct.
4. Control volatile content deliberately
Dynamic content can create noisy diffs even when the layout is healthy. Stabilize test data and page readiness, and use Playwright’s screenshot styling options to hide or control elements such as clocks, rotating banners, animations, or ads when those elements are not part of the behavior being tested. Do not mask a region whose visual changes are the subject of the test.
5. Choose a project-specific tolerance
Playwright supports comparison controls including maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio, and a color threshold. Begin with strict comparison on stable pages, inspect failures, and adjust only when you understand the source of acceptable variation. There is no universally correct tolerance: too strict can flag harmless rendering noise; too loose can conceal meaningful changes. See Playwright’s screenshot comparison options for the current configuration details.

Correlate a failed comparison with Loki logs
Emit useful context with logs
Send relevant application and test-run logs to Loki with timestamps and stable labels. Include run identifiers, build or application version, and environment in log context where appropriate. Use stable service and environment labels for stream selection; put highly variable identifiers in log content rather than creating a new label value for every run.
Query the matching time window
After the browser test fails, note its capture time and run identifier. In Grafana Explore, select the Loki data source, choose a time range that includes the capture and nearby events, and query the relevant service or environment labels. Inspect errors, failed requests, and application events around that time. LogQL queries operate on log streams and their labels; they do not take a screenshot or calculate an image diff. Grafana’s logs visualization can show timestamped lines and context such as severity.

Keep screenshot artifacts with the test run
Store screenshots, baselines, and diffs as CI or browser-test artifacts under your team’s retention policy. Link those artifacts to the run, and use matching run context in logs to connect the evidence. The documented Loki workflow is log aggregation and querying; it does not provide a built-in screenshot artifact store or visual-diff feature.
Investigate failures without masking real regressions
- Open the actual screenshot and diff. Identify which elements moved, appeared, disappeared, or changed color.
- Check capture consistency. Compare browser, operating system, viewport, fonts, device scale, headless mode, and test state with the baseline environment.
- Check dynamic inputs. Look for changed test data, timing, animation, rotating content, or external resources.
- Query Loki for the test interval. Filter to relevant service and environment labels, then inspect errors or events near the capture timestamp.
- Classify the result. Decide whether it is an intended UI change, a genuine rendering regression, or capture noise. Approve a changed baseline only after review.
Grafana alert screenshots are not website visual tests
Grafana can attach screenshots of panels associated with alert rules in supported configurations. That feature is different from capturing a website and comparing it with a baseline. Grafana’s documentation explicitly says alert-notification screenshots are not supported in Loki; see Images in notifications. It does not turn Loki into a website screenshot comparison engine.
