Cypress can capture a screenshot with cy.screenshot(), but it does not compare screenshots by itself. To see website changes in an overlay or highlighted difference view, pair Cypress with a visual-testing integration: capture a chosen page or element, compare it with an approved baseline, then review and approve intentional changes.
What Cypress screenshot comparison does—and does not—do
cy.screenshot() saves an image; visual comparison is the job of a plugin or service. The integration compares the current capture with a baseline and provides a review workflow. Depending on the tool, you can inspect the baseline and current image side by side, use an overlay, or view a pixel-difference image with changed areas highlighted. Cypress’s visual-testing guide explains the distinction and describes available approaches.

An overlay is useful for spotting shifted elements and layout changes; a highlighted difference image can make changed pixels easier to locate. Neither view decides whether a change is a defect. A reviewer still needs to judge whether it is intentional.

Build a reliable Cypress visual-comparison workflow
- Choose a meaningful checkpoint. Drive the app to the page, component, and UI state you want to protect, then capture there. Avoid snapshots of incidental states that do not represent a user-visible requirement.
- Make the state repeatable. Stub changing API responses with
cy.intercept()and fixture data where appropriate. Keep the browser and rendering environment consistent between baseline and later runs. Cypress disables JavaScript timers and CSS animations by default in screenshots to reduce variation. See the screenshot command documentation. - Install and configure a visual-testing integration. Local plugins can compare captures against baselines in the project or CI. Hosted services provide their own comparison and review flows. Follow the chosen tool’s current setup instructions; configuration and compatibility differ.
- Capture at the right scope. Use an element capture when checking a component so unrelated page changes are less likely to create noise. Use a full-page capture when the overall page layout is the subject.
- Review the diff before updating the baseline. Inspect the current and baseline captures and the overlay or highlighted differences. Approve a replacement baseline only after confirming that the change is intentional.
- Mask only uncontrollable regions. If an ad, third-party widget, or other dynamic region cannot be made deterministic, exclude that specific area rather than loosening the threshold for the whole page.
Choose local or hosted comparison
The main decision is how your team wants to manage images, baselines, and review—not a universal ranking of tools. Cypress’s guide lists local open-source plugins including Cypress Image Diff, Cypress Image Snapshot, Cypress Visual Regression, and Visual Regression Diff. It also lists hosted choices such as Applitools Eyes, Argos, Chromatic, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Percy, Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io. Their capabilities and workflows vary.

| Decision point | Local plugin | Hosted service |
|---|---|---|
| Where comparison runs | In your project or CI environment | In the provider’s service, subject to its workflow |
| Baseline management | Your team manages baseline files and changes | Provider-specific storage and approval workflow |
| Review and sharing | Your team manages CI artifacts and review | May provide hosted review or pull-request workflows; verify the specific product |
| Rendering breadth | Depends on your configured browser and environment | Some options describe cross-browser or responsive rendering; confirm current support directly |
| Operational trade-off | More control over where images stay, with more responsibility for consistency and infrastructure | Less self-managed review plumbing, with service-specific data handling and capabilities to assess |
Before choosing, check supported Cypress versions, element and page capture support, component-testing fit, browser and responsive coverage, handling of dynamic regions, baseline approval mechanics, image data handling, and current pricing. The Cypress plugin catalog is maintained over time; for example, its listing for Cypress Image Snapshot showed version 11.0.0, updated September 2026, with Cypress 15.10.0 or newer required. Treat that as catalog metadata, not a permanent compatibility guarantee, and verify the live listing and package documentation before installing. Cypress plugin catalog

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Keep visual tests useful in CI
- Capture a deliberate, stable state rather than every route or transient state indiscriminately.
- Use fixtures for variable data and keep viewport, browser, and rendering conditions consistent when comparing runs.
- Keep component checks focused with element captures; reserve full-page screenshots for page-level layout assertions.
- Make baseline changes reviewable. A visual diff is a signal to investigate, not an automatic instruction to accept the new image.
- Use narrow masks for content that cannot be controlled, so genuine changes elsewhere remain visible.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I create an overlay using only Cypress?
No. Cypress captures screenshots, but an overlay or pixel-difference comparison requires a visual-testing integration.
Should I use a full-page screenshot for every visual test?
No. Capture an element for a focused component check; use a full-page image when the page’s overall layout is what you need to validate.
